Reflecting and Remembering God’s Prophetic Providence

I am so grateful for the freedoms we enjoy! But is seems we live in a land of paradoxes. We all benefit from the foundations laid, the price many paid and sacrifices they made, by which we enjoy the liberties and freedoms in our nation. Yet, many forget the roots of those foundations. Too many casually disregard what previous generations have held to be of fundamental importance.
Listen as Doug Stringer shares a powerful reminder of how volatile our liberties and freedoms are. They must not be taken for granted. Let us steward themwith respect and a sense of responsibility…so we can pass them on to future generations.

00:00:03,360 --> 00:00:09,520
We share good news and godly wisdom to empower you to be salt and light in every season of life.
3
00:00:09,520 --> 00:00:15,360
It seems we live in a land of paradoxes and are witnessing the inclination to casually disregard
4
00:00:15,360 --> 00:00:19,680
what previous generations have held to be of fundamental importance.
5
00:00:19,680 --> 00:00:23,680
In this episode, Doug reminds us of how much we have to be grateful for
6
00:00:23,680 --> 00:00:28,000
and to reflect upon the fundamental values that our nation was founded on.

at somebodycares.org. Now let's join our host, Doug Stringer.
10
00:00:42,400 --> 00:00:47,760
Each July 4th week, I take time to reflect and remember God's providence for our nation.
11
00:00:47,760 --> 00:00:52,480
In fact, reflecting on this upcoming July 4th, I'm reminded of how much I have to be grateful for.
12
00:00:52,480 --> 00:00:59,040
I'm grateful for all the sacrifices made by so many for the liberties and freedoms that I enjoy
13
00:00:59,040 --> 00:01:04,240
today, in fact that we all enjoy today. I'm also reminded by the words of our first president,
14
00:01:04,240 --> 00:01:10,400
George Washington. We have God to thank for America's birthday. He also goes on to say,
15
00:01:10,400 --> 00:01:16,000
No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of
16
00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:21,680
men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the
17
00:01:21,680 --> 00:01:26,000
character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of
18
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,920
providential agency. Many will greet one another with happy 4th of July or display flags, have
19
00:01:31,920 --> 00:01:37,200
barbecues and picnics, attend parties, and of course watch magnificent displays of fireworks.
20
00:01:37,200 --> 00:01:42,960
I wonder though just how many will actually comprehend the history and the price paid for
21
00:01:42,960 --> 00:01:49,440
the liberties that we enjoy so much. It seems we live in a land of paradoxes. We are all the
22
00:01:49,440 --> 00:01:54,960
beneficiaries of the foundations laid through many a price paid and sacrifices made by which
23
00:01:54,960 --> 00:02:01,360
we enjoy the liberties and freedoms in our nation. Yet many forget the roots of those foundations.
24
00:02:01,840 --> 00:02:07,440
We are witnessing the inclination to casually disregard what previous generations have held to
25
00:02:07,440 --> 00:02:12,560
be of fundamental importance to us. Let us not only greet one another with happy 4th or
26
00:02:12,560 --> 00:02:18,400
Independence Day, but may we have a deep gratitude and appreciation for those who sacrificed for
27
00:02:18,400 --> 00:02:24,720
us to have them. May we also be keenly aware of just how volatile our liberties and freedoms are.
28
00:02:24,720 --> 00:02:30,480
They must not be taken for granted, but stewarded with respect and a sense of responsibility.
29
00:02:30,480 --> 00:02:35,920
Thus we find ourselves losing the very things we have so cherished. President Ronald Reagan once
30
00:02:35,920 --> 00:02:41,760
said, freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our
31
00:02:41,760 --> 00:02:47,680
children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for the future.
32
00:02:47,680 --> 00:02:53,200
We will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like
33
00:02:53,200 --> 00:02:58,400
in the United States where men were free. You see, our founding fathers understood that freedom
34
00:02:58,400 --> 00:03:05,040
naturally decays as societies expand unless people of principle defend it. That tendency
35
00:03:05,040 --> 00:03:10,320
has been true at every point in human history and always will be. Government has the necessary
36
00:03:10,320 --> 00:03:14,640
role of defending our liberty, free speech, and the right to property.
37
00:03:14,640 --> 00:03:20,560
But virtue can become a vice when it attempts too much. We must be watchful to ensure that the
38
00:03:20,560 --> 00:03:26,400
government's good intentions don't become the overreach that becomes tyranny. In our freedoms
39
00:03:26,400 --> 00:03:31,200
and liberties, we may not always agree on every issue, and that's very obvious on the day in which
40
00:03:31,200 --> 00:03:38,000
we live. But may we remember to always have respect and show civility in our public discourse,
41
00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:44,560
even in our strong disagreements. Let us remember that we are not the only ones who have the right
42
00:03:44,560 --> 00:03:50,320
to have a right to freedom. We must remember and reflect upon the fundamental values that our nation
43
00:03:50,320 --> 00:03:56,880
was founded on. The Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776 is as providential and
44
00:03:56,880 --> 00:04:02,480
powerful today as it was when it was written and when it was signed back then. We hold these truths
45
00:04:02,480 --> 00:04:08,720
to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain
46
00:04:08,720 --> 00:04:15,600
values, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And yes, in our frail
47
00:04:15,600 --> 00:04:20,960
humanity, there have been many challenges and conflicts to address and work through since our
48
00:04:20,960 --> 00:04:27,520
very founding. Yet there is no other nation as young and as diverse as the U.S. So let us remember
49
00:04:27,520 --> 00:04:33,840
and reflect upon the redemptive and fundamental values that our nation was founded on. And to
50
00:04:33,840 --> 00:04:41,200
recognize that we are an indivisible, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice
51
00:04:41,200 --> 00:04:48,080
for all. I find the words of the Apostle Paul in Acts, Chapter 17, verse 26 through 28, and Galatians,
52
00:04:48,080 --> 00:04:54,000
Chapter 5, verse 1, fitting for us today. And it's part of my regular prayer time. And he has made
53
00:04:54,000 --> 00:05:01,040
from one blood every nation of men to dwell on the face of the earth and has determined their
54
00:05:01,040 --> 00:05:04,980
boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord in the hope that they
55
00:05:04,980 --> 00:05:11,060
might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. For in Him
56
00:05:11,060 --> 00:05:16,580
we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, for we are
57
00:05:16,580 --> 00:05:22,940
also His offspring." That's Acts chapter 17 verse 26 through 28.
58
00:05:22,940 --> 00:05:28,940
Think of the possibilities. Of any nation in the world, the United States of America is
59
00:05:28,940 --> 00:05:34,240
made up of individuals and people from every nation. In other words, just like Paul said
60
00:05:34,240 --> 00:05:40,880
in Acts chapter 17, one blood from every nation. Through Christ we're one blood, we're unified
61
00:05:40,880 --> 00:05:45,640
in Him as a people of the United States of America, yes with all of our conflicts and
62
00:05:45,640 --> 00:05:50,600
challenges and differences and difficulties, yet we are brought from every nation to be
63
00:05:50,600 --> 00:05:58,480
one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. One blood, many nations.
64
00:05:58,480 --> 00:06:04,200
I love what Paul says in Galatians chapter 5 verse 1, Stand fast therefore in the liberty
65
00:06:04,200 --> 00:06:10,120
by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
66
00:06:10,120 --> 00:06:16,580
I pray that our liberties would not become a license for licentiousness that causes greater
67
00:06:16,580 --> 00:06:23,400
division and schisms between us, but realizing we're part of something bigger than ourselves,
68
00:06:23,400 --> 00:06:28,840
that the providence of God has brought us together for a time such as this. And first and foremost
69
00:06:28,840 --> 00:06:33,960
it starts with a heart awakening in us, so we can have a church-wide corporate awakening
70
00:06:33,960 --> 00:06:39,440
and so that together we can reach the soul of our nation. The nations of the world are
71
00:06:39,440 --> 00:06:45,320
here and it's here that we need an awakening and a personal sense of responsibility for
72
00:06:45,320 --> 00:06:49,960
the freedoms and liberties God has given us, so that we can, like in the covenant of Abraham,
73
00:06:49,960 --> 00:06:55,920
be a blessing to the nations. Let us truly recognize the depth and the breadth of the
74
00:06:55,920 --> 00:07:00,360
foundations laid, the price that's already been paid for our liberties and freedoms,
75
00:07:00,360 --> 00:07:05,480
so that we can take the responsibility to be a light that shines like a lighthouse to
76
00:07:05,480 --> 00:07:09,120
a world that's desperately working through the fog, through the darkness, through the
77
00:07:09,120 --> 00:07:14,800
storms of life. We need the presence and the peace of God like never before. And I pray
78
00:07:14,800 --> 00:07:20,720
that the church awakened together, crossing our racial, denominational, generational lines,
79
00:07:20,720 --> 00:07:26,200
becoming part of something greater than ourselves, would recognize this awesome responsibility
80
00:07:26,200 --> 00:07:28,000
for a time such as this.
81
00:07:28,000 --> 00:07:35,280
Back in 2015, in preparation for a city-wide gathering of pastors, intercessors, leaders
82
00:07:35,280 --> 00:07:40,000
in the greater Houston area, I was preparing, but yet I was also losing all my hair. It
83
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:44,800
was July 3rd. I was preparing for July 4th to speak at this gathering, and yet I was
84
00:07:44,800 --> 00:07:49,000
losing all my hair from chemo. I won't get into the whole story, but it was called,
85
00:07:49,000 --> 00:07:53,960
The Eagle is Balding. And I talked about, is there hope and healing for the bald eagle
86
00:07:53,960 --> 00:07:58,240
nation? Now we know that our national bird is a bald eagle, so I was using that prophetic
87
00:07:58,240 --> 00:08:03,200
drama of the very things I was going through in my own body. And like the prophets of the
88
00:08:03,200 --> 00:08:07,480
Old Testament, or the early church leaders, many times when they were going through something
89
00:08:07,480 --> 00:08:13,160
personal, it became a part of what was called a prophetic drama. The message became larger
90
00:08:13,160 --> 00:08:15,840
than the context of what they were going through.
91
00:08:15,840 --> 00:08:21,340
In retrospect, recognizing it's been eight years now since that moment when I was losing
92
00:08:21,340 --> 00:08:26,400
my hair on July 3rd, and I jokingly said to my wife, the eagle is balding in preparation
93
00:08:26,400 --> 00:08:32,400
for that July 4th city-wide gathering. But I realize now how prophetic that really was.
94
00:08:32,400 --> 00:08:36,260
The things we were going through, the message I ended up writing about in an article in
95
00:08:36,260 --> 00:08:43,620
July of 2015 called, The Eagle is Balding. Can the church help heal a nation? Looking
96
00:08:43,620 --> 00:08:49,240
back now, that was five years before COVID, five years before all the challenges and the
97
00:08:49,240 --> 00:08:55,160
divisiveness and the increase of challenges and anarchy and divisiveness in our nation.
98
00:08:55,160 --> 00:08:59,320
It was five years before all the beginnings of all this unraveling in our nation and around
99
00:08:59,320 --> 00:09:06,080
the world. God was preparing His people, and He's always looking to us to look introspectively
100
00:09:06,080 --> 00:09:10,840
– looking at our own hearts, our own heart conditions. You've heard me say before in
101
00:09:10,840 --> 00:09:16,800
the Reform of Josiah in 622 BC that King Josiah, when he realized how everything had gotten
102
00:09:16,800 --> 00:09:21,700
out of kilter and he began to legislate the laws of God when he saw how far we'd become
103
00:09:21,700 --> 00:09:27,240
untethered from the laws of God. Jeremiah and Zephaniah, the prophets in the Old Testament,
104
00:09:27,240 --> 00:09:32,240
who were contemporaries at the time, although commending King Josiah, made a strong statement
105
00:09:32,240 --> 00:09:38,400
and alluded to this, lasting change will never take place until the inward corruption of
106
00:09:38,400 --> 00:09:42,640
the heart is first dealt with. That's why you've heard me say with redundancy over
107
00:09:42,640 --> 00:09:48,280
and over and over, we need an individual heart awakening, a corporate church heart awakening,
108
00:09:48,280 --> 00:09:54,240
if we're going to heal the soul of a nation. There is no hope, and there will be no lasting
109
00:09:54,240 --> 00:09:59,120
change until we first deal with the inward corruption of our own hearts. Anyway, if you'd
110
00:09:59,120 --> 00:10:04,360
like a copy of that prophetic drama, that message I wrote in July 2015 and was published
111
00:10:04,360 --> 00:10:08,720
by various online magazines, I'd be happy to send you a copy. In fact, you can go to
112
00:10:08,720 --> 00:10:14,760
dougstringer.com and look up The Eagle is Balding. It's from July 2015. Or you can
113
00:10:14,760 --> 00:10:22,160
email us at somebodycares.org, requesting the prophetic drama message, Is There Hope
114
00:10:22,160 --> 00:10:27,920
and Healing for the Bald Eagle Nation by Doug Stringer. I'd be happy to send it to you.
115
00:10:27,920 --> 00:10:34,440
So in conclusion today, let me remind us that we are from every nation, one blood in Christ
116
00:10:34,440 --> 00:10:39,280
Jesus. We can cross our racial, denominational, generational lines meeting at the cross of
117
00:10:39,280 --> 00:10:44,540
Christ and together become part of something greater than ourselves. The Church in our
118
00:10:44,540 --> 00:10:49,600
nation and our nation together can be a blessing to the nations of the world or continue to
119
00:10:49,600 --> 00:10:54,140
be a blessing to the nations of the world. And again, as Paul said in Galatians chapter
120
00:10:54,140 --> 00:10:59,400
five verse one, let's stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us
121
00:10:59,400 --> 00:11:05,140
free and do not be entangled again in yokes of bondage. So again, may I say to you, have
122
00:11:05,140 --> 00:11:10,880
a great Fourth of July week, have a great blessed Independence Day in July Fourth, enjoy
123
00:11:10,880 --> 00:11:17,320
family, enjoy all the festivities and the fireworks, but let us never forget the foundations
124
00:11:17,320 --> 00:11:23,860
laid, the sacrifices made and the price has been paid for you and I to enjoy the liberties
125
00:11:23,860 --> 00:11:28,760
and freedoms that we have. Happy and blessed Independence Day and every day, happy Fourth
126
00:11:28,760 --> 00:11:29,760
of July.
