Key Thoughts and Scriptures:

Luke 1:29-31 NIV Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.

Angels who brought Lot and his family out of Sodom

The angel who stood before Balaam in order to kill him

The angel who brought plague on Israel

Whenever angels entered the scene big, life altering things happened.
The unknown is at the heart of most fear.
The Greek word translated “favor” here is charis, which speaks of grace and kindness.
Gabriel was telling Mary, “You have God’s grace and kindness on you, so do not fear.”
In Scripture the Lord says the same thing to us!

Romans 5:1-3 NIV Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand…

By faith we have access to God’s kindness, which is the same yesterday, today and forever!  Therefore, we can trust God completely with the unknowns of our lives.
“Did God say” is often used to sow doubt in our minds and shake our faith.

God did not take offense that Mary needed assurance.

Mark 9:15-29 NIV …But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “‘If you can’?” said Jesu

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,740
Hey friends, thank you for joining me for a bit of encouragement and inspiration in

2
00:00:04,740 --> 00:00:08,900
your walk with the Lord during this very busy holiday time of year.

3
00:00:08,900 --> 00:00:14,100
I'm your host, Jodie Chiricosta, ministry leader at Somebody Cares America and international

4
00:00:14,100 --> 00:00:17,320
author and traveler on this journey of faith.

5
00:00:17,320 --> 00:00:21,620
This episode is dedicated to my wonderful mom, Mary, on her birthday.

6
00:00:21,620 --> 00:00:26,300
She has been an amazing example of following Jesus and of putting her faith and trust in

7
00:00:26,300 --> 00:00:32,000
God and in honor of her and of this Christmas season, I'm going to share a little from

8
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,800
the story of another Mary, Mary the mother of Jesus.

9
00:00:35,800 --> 00:00:40,680
But better than celebrating my mom on her birthday is celebrating the birth, the incarnation

10
00:00:40,680 --> 00:00:43,200
of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas.

11
00:00:43,200 --> 00:00:47,820
I love Christmas and all the joy and expectation that comes with it.

12
00:00:47,820 --> 00:00:53,380
It's the time of year we hear a lot of peace on earth, goodwill to men, or God's favor

13
00:00:53,380 --> 00:00:58,440
on men because that is God's desire and plan for us.

14
00:00:58,440 --> 00:01:03,480
But let's be real, the past few years have been anything but peaceful.

15
00:01:03,480 --> 00:01:06,640
Fear and anxiety is a very real part of our world.

16
00:01:06,640 --> 00:01:12,240
Civil unrest, racial tensions, political instability, war, inflation, disease, natural disaster,

17
00:01:12,240 --> 00:01:17,640
and so on have caused more and more people to experience a high degree of stress and

18
00:01:17,640 --> 00:01:18,640
worry.

19
00:01:18,640 --> 00:01:23,480
A survey published on safehome.org a couple years ago said that 45% of the people in the

20
00:01:23,480 --> 00:01:31,800
US reported an increase in daily anxiety levels and 39% report regularly losing sleep at night

21
00:01:31,800 --> 00:01:32,800
because of it.

22
00:01:32,800 --> 00:01:38,540
And since that survey was done, things have gotten even more chaotic for many people.

23
00:01:38,540 --> 00:01:41,900
In Mary's day, things were not very peaceful either.

24
00:01:41,900 --> 00:01:45,720
Israel had been conquered by the Romans who ruled the land with an iron fist.

25
00:01:45,720 --> 00:01:51,160
Mary lived in an out of the way town of Nazareth, a poor community that was looked down on by

26
00:01:51,160 --> 00:01:53,960
many other Jewish people in the land.

27
00:01:53,960 --> 00:01:58,720
And Mary was in her early teens when a potentially terrifying thing happened.

28
00:01:58,720 --> 00:02:01,100
She was confronted by an angel.

29
00:02:01,100 --> 00:02:04,780
This angel was not one of the cute cherubs we may see sitting on a mantle or hanging

30
00:02:04,780 --> 00:02:05,860
on a tree.

31
00:02:05,860 --> 00:02:09,440
This was Gabriel, Archangel of the Lord of Hosts.

32
00:02:09,440 --> 00:02:14,200
Throughout scripture, when angels talked to people like Daniel, John, Isaiah, and others,

33
00:02:14,200 --> 00:02:17,120
they were initially terrified.

34
00:02:17,120 --> 00:02:19,400
This is the kind of angel that appeared to Mary.

35
00:02:19,400 --> 00:02:24,040
When the angel spoke to Mary, scripture says she was greatly troubled by his words.

36
00:02:24,040 --> 00:02:26,460
That's probably an understatement.

37
00:02:26,460 --> 00:02:30,960
In the synagogue, she had undoubtedly heard stories of angelic encounters of the past.

38
00:02:30,960 --> 00:02:34,520
There were the angels who brought Lot and his family out of Sodom before destroying

39
00:02:34,520 --> 00:02:39,800
it, the angel who stood before Balaam in order to kill him, the angel who brought plague

40
00:02:39,800 --> 00:02:42,040
on Israel, and others.

41
00:02:42,040 --> 00:02:47,080
But this Mary, Gabriel, came to Mary with kind, encouraging words.

42
00:02:47,080 --> 00:02:50,520
As you can imagine, she was not sure what to think of at all.

43
00:02:50,520 --> 00:02:55,780
Whenever angels entered the scene, big, life-altering things happened.

44
00:02:55,780 --> 00:03:00,840
This young teenage girl from a small rural village was afraid of what might lie ahead,

45
00:03:00,840 --> 00:03:01,840
the unknown.

46
00:03:01,840 --> 00:03:03,900
The unknown is at the heart of most fear.

47
00:03:03,900 --> 00:03:06,240
How will the event change our life?

48
00:03:06,240 --> 00:03:08,040
How will people respond to you?

49
00:03:08,040 --> 00:03:09,200
It's all unknown.

50
00:03:09,200 --> 00:03:13,080
The angel knew Mary's anxious thoughts and spoke words of comfort.

51
00:03:13,080 --> 00:03:15,280
Do not be afraid, Mary.

52
00:03:15,280 --> 00:03:19,360
You have found favor with God, he said in Luke 1.30.

53
00:03:19,360 --> 00:03:25,840
The Greek word translated favor here is charis, which speaks of grace and kindness.

54
00:03:25,840 --> 00:03:31,480
Gabriel was telling Mary, you have God's grace and kindness on you, so do not fear.

55
00:03:31,480 --> 00:03:34,480
In scripture, the Lord says the same thing to us.

56
00:03:34,480 --> 00:03:36,680
Do not fear.

57
00:03:36,680 --> 00:03:40,040
We also live in God's grace and kindness.

58
00:03:40,040 --> 00:03:45,760
Romans 5, 1-3 tells us that since we have been justified through faith, we have peace

59
00:03:45,760 --> 00:03:50,800
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into His

60
00:03:50,800 --> 00:03:56,000
grace, His charis, in which we now stand.

61
00:03:56,000 --> 00:04:03,000
By faith, we have access to God's kindness, which is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

62
00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:07,360
So we can trust God completely with the unknowns of our lives.

63
00:04:07,360 --> 00:04:08,920
So do not fear anything.

64
00:04:08,920 --> 00:04:13,760
By faith, live in the grace and kindness of God today and in your unknown future, just

65
00:04:13,760 --> 00:04:15,240
like Mary did.

66
00:04:15,240 --> 00:04:18,320
From time to time, of course, we all struggle with doubt.

67
00:04:18,320 --> 00:04:22,160
Believe me, I understand it's one of Satan's favorite tools.

68
00:04:22,160 --> 00:04:23,160
Did God say?

69
00:04:23,160 --> 00:04:27,560
It's often used to sow doubt in our minds and shake our faith.

70
00:04:27,560 --> 00:04:32,360
And sometimes we raise the shadow of doubt on our own without Satan's intervention.

71
00:04:32,360 --> 00:04:37,120
It's hard to imagine change will come when things have been the same for so long and

72
00:04:37,120 --> 00:04:41,960
when the promise of something we have never seen or heard is made, it seems safer to cling

73
00:04:41,960 --> 00:04:42,960
to doubt.

74
00:04:42,960 --> 00:04:44,960
Mary faced a huge unknown.

75
00:04:44,960 --> 00:04:51,760
When the angel told her she would be the mother of their long-awaited Messiah, Mary had questions.

76
00:04:51,760 --> 00:04:57,160
The angel also told her that her elderly relative Elizabeth was also pregnant.

77
00:04:57,160 --> 00:05:00,560
She needed to check out the truth of these claims, so she was quick to visit Elizabeth

78
00:05:00,560 --> 00:05:02,600
and she got the confirmation she needed.

79
00:05:02,600 --> 00:05:04,480
Isn't God good?

80
00:05:04,480 --> 00:05:08,080
He knew what he had told Mary was pretty hard to comprehend.

81
00:05:08,080 --> 00:05:12,420
It would require a miracle when miracles were in short supply just then.

82
00:05:12,420 --> 00:05:16,200
So God showed her the miracle of Elizabeth's pregnancy.

83
00:05:16,200 --> 00:05:19,840
Elizabeth was well past childbearing years.

84
00:05:19,840 --> 00:05:23,040
God did not take offense that Mary needed assurance.

85
00:05:23,040 --> 00:05:28,520
30 or so years later, during Jesus' earthly ministry, news about the healings he performed

86
00:05:28,520 --> 00:05:32,040
in the people he delivered spread like wildfire.

87
00:05:32,040 --> 00:05:36,560
Even his disciples were being used to minister and heal.

88
00:05:36,560 --> 00:05:43,640
So in Mark 9 verses 15 through 26, when a desperate father brings his deaf and infirm

89
00:05:43,640 --> 00:05:46,520
son to them for help, he is full of hope.

90
00:05:46,520 --> 00:05:51,720
But when Jesus' disciples were unable to heal his son, this father's face began to

91
00:05:51,720 --> 00:05:52,720
slip.

92
00:05:52,720 --> 00:05:55,640
When Jesus arrived on the scene and began inquiring about the boy, the father wasn't

93
00:05:55,640 --> 00:05:58,000
even sure he could help.

94
00:05:58,000 --> 00:06:02,360
If you can do anything, please take pity on us, he said.

95
00:06:02,360 --> 00:06:04,680
I can imagine what was going through his mind.

96
00:06:04,680 --> 00:06:06,680
Maybe Jesus has finally met his match.

97
00:06:06,680 --> 00:06:09,000
Maybe my son can't be saved.

98
00:06:09,000 --> 00:06:13,760
He wanted to believe Jesus' power would set his son free, but there was some doubt.

99
00:06:13,760 --> 00:06:19,080
When Jesus proclaimed everything is possible for one who believes, the father was brutally

100
00:06:19,080 --> 00:06:20,080
honest.

101
00:06:20,080 --> 00:06:21,760
I do believe.

102
00:06:21,760 --> 00:06:26,120
Help me overcome my unbelief, he said.

103
00:06:26,120 --> 00:06:27,120
That's all Jesus needed.

104
00:06:27,120 --> 00:06:29,520
He cast the demon out, healed the boy.

105
00:06:29,520 --> 00:06:31,840
His father sure believed after that.

106
00:06:31,840 --> 00:06:36,040
So if you struggle with doubting God or his promises, be honest with him.

107
00:06:36,040 --> 00:06:37,280
Ask for his help.

108
00:06:37,280 --> 00:06:40,880
And spend time reading the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

109
00:06:40,880 --> 00:06:47,360
John 20 verses 30 and 31 says, Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples,

110
00:06:47,360 --> 00:06:52,240
which are not recorded in this book, but these are written that you may believe that Jesus

111
00:06:52,240 --> 00:06:57,560
is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

112
00:06:57,560 --> 00:07:02,280
The more you know Christ, the stronger your faith will grow.

113
00:07:02,280 --> 00:07:03,280
Back to Mary.

114
00:07:03,280 --> 00:07:08,320
Seeing Elizabeth was pregnant certainly bolstered Mary's faith, but she was still faced with

115
00:07:08,320 --> 00:07:11,200
a huge transition with many unknowns.

116
00:07:11,200 --> 00:07:14,760
She had no idea what lay ahead and how this would all play out.

117
00:07:14,760 --> 00:07:17,560
Would Joseph her betrothed still agree to marry her?

118
00:07:17,560 --> 00:07:19,760
What would happen when people found out she was pregnant?

119
00:07:19,760 --> 00:07:21,260
How would her family react?

120
00:07:21,260 --> 00:07:26,280
Of course, God had spoken to her and confirmed his word, but there were still a lot of unanswered

121
00:07:26,280 --> 00:07:27,280
questions.

122
00:07:27,280 --> 00:07:29,520
Have you ever felt like that?

123
00:07:29,520 --> 00:07:31,160
Maybe you feel like that now.

124
00:07:31,160 --> 00:07:36,760
Instead of focusing on the unknowns, Mary focused on what she did know, proclaiming

125
00:07:36,760 --> 00:07:40,520
the goodness and provision of God in her life.

126
00:07:40,520 --> 00:07:45,820
In Luke 1 verses 46 through 55, we see how she got her strength.

127
00:07:45,820 --> 00:07:51,720
As she was standing there with Elizabeth, Mary's voice rang out with praise to God.

128
00:07:51,720 --> 00:07:55,960
The New Living Translation reads, Oh, how my soul praises the Lord!

129
00:07:55,960 --> 00:07:58,640
How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!

130
00:07:58,640 --> 00:08:03,840
For he took notice of this lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call

131
00:08:03,840 --> 00:08:05,060
me blessed.

132
00:08:05,060 --> 00:08:10,000
For the mighty one is holy, and he has done great things for me.

133
00:08:10,000 --> 00:08:14,160
He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.

134
00:08:14,160 --> 00:08:17,140
His mighty arm has done tremendous things.

135
00:08:17,140 --> 00:08:19,740
He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.

136
00:08:19,740 --> 00:08:23,280
He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.

137
00:08:23,280 --> 00:08:28,680
He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands.

138
00:08:28,680 --> 00:08:33,440
He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful.

139
00:08:33,440 --> 00:08:38,660
For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children, forever.

140
00:08:38,660 --> 00:08:41,240
In the natural, she was still unmarried.

141
00:08:41,240 --> 00:08:44,940
She still faced the potential of stoning or being ostracized.

142
00:08:44,940 --> 00:08:49,880
And yet, she proclaims, How my soul rejoices in God my Savior!

143
00:08:49,880 --> 00:08:54,720
For he took notice of this lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call

144
00:08:54,720 --> 00:08:55,800
me blessed.

145
00:08:55,800 --> 00:08:59,720
For the mighty one is holy, and he has done great things for me.

146
00:08:59,720 --> 00:09:04,320
I know from experience, when we declare the goodness and faithfulness of God out loud

147
00:09:04,320 --> 00:09:09,080
with our mouths, our spirit rises up and faith with it.

148
00:09:09,080 --> 00:09:13,900
We're lifted up and begin seeing things from God's perspective and know His reality instead

149
00:09:13,900 --> 00:09:16,040
of the world's perception of things.

150
00:09:16,040 --> 00:09:20,720
I have no doubt that is what happened to Mary too, as she declared the goodness and faithfulness

151
00:09:20,720 --> 00:09:22,180
of God.

152
00:09:22,180 --> 00:09:27,880
Faith and joy rose up in her so strongly that it lifted all doubt and fear.

153
00:09:27,880 --> 00:09:31,600
Over and over again in the Psalms, we see David do this.

154
00:09:31,600 --> 00:09:37,760
When he was being chased by his enemies, or was betrayed by a friend, or winning battles,

155
00:09:37,760 --> 00:09:42,640
or receiving the adoration of his kingdom, David always focused on God.

156
00:09:42,640 --> 00:09:47,880
No matter what David's mental or emotional state, when he starts telling of God's faithfulness

157
00:09:47,880 --> 00:09:52,080
and goodness, his outlook always improves.

158
00:09:52,080 --> 00:09:56,120
Maybe Mary learned that secret hearing stories about David at synagogue when she was a young

159
00:09:56,120 --> 00:09:57,120
girl.

160
00:09:57,120 --> 00:09:59,240
It's a secret worth learning.

161
00:09:59,240 --> 00:10:03,720
When we put this into practice, it not only changes our perspective.

162
00:10:03,720 --> 00:10:09,600
We invite God's miraculous peace, power, and favor into our situation, and that is

163
00:10:09,600 --> 00:10:10,900
always good.

164
00:10:10,900 --> 00:10:15,980
If you're facing unknowns, take a few moments to focus on God's faithfulness and proclaim

165
00:10:15,980 --> 00:10:18,680
His goodness in your life as well.

166
00:10:18,680 --> 00:10:22,360
Sometimes when I don't know where to start, I pick out a Psalm and personalize it.

167
00:10:22,360 --> 00:10:23,760
I say it out loud.

168
00:10:23,760 --> 00:10:29,520
So as many of my senses as possible are engaged in reading, saying, and hearing the truth.

169
00:10:29,520 --> 00:10:31,640
Psalm 103 is a great place to start.

170
00:10:31,640 --> 00:10:36,000
I'll give you an example, Jody, praise the Lord.

171
00:10:36,000 --> 00:10:37,880
Everything in me, praise His holy name.

172
00:10:37,880 --> 00:10:41,960
Yes, I say, praise the Lord, Jody, and don't forget any of His benefits.

173
00:10:41,960 --> 00:10:46,120
The Lord, my God, forgives all my sins.

174
00:10:46,120 --> 00:10:48,580
He heals all my diseases.

175
00:10:48,580 --> 00:10:55,840
He has redeemed me, Jody Kirikosta, from the pit and crowned me with love and compassion.

176
00:10:55,840 --> 00:11:01,920
The Lord satisfies my desires with good things and renews my youth like the eagles.

177
00:11:01,920 --> 00:11:07,560
The Lord works righteousness and justice for me and for all the oppressed.

178
00:11:07,560 --> 00:11:11,100
The Lord is compassionate and gracious to me.

179
00:11:11,100 --> 00:11:14,560
He is slow to anger with me, abounding in love.

180
00:11:14,560 --> 00:11:19,400
He does not treat me as my sins deserve or repay me for my wrongdoings, for as high as

181
00:11:19,400 --> 00:11:23,720
the heavens are above the earth, so great is God's love for me.

182
00:11:23,720 --> 00:11:29,160
Jesus has removed my sin from me as far as the east is from the west.

183
00:11:29,160 --> 00:11:34,680
The Lord is my good and loving Father, tender and compassionate.

184
00:11:34,680 --> 00:11:40,920
He knows my weaknesses, and still His love and kindness remain on me forever.

185
00:11:40,920 --> 00:11:41,920
Amen.

186
00:11:41,920 --> 00:11:46,760
There are a lot of great Psalms and other scriptures that lend themselves to this type

187
00:11:46,760 --> 00:11:47,760
of proclamation.

188
00:11:47,760 --> 00:11:53,880
Psalms 23, Psalm 37, Psalm 91 are all some of my favorites.

189
00:11:53,880 --> 00:11:54,880
Try it out.

190
00:11:54,880 --> 00:11:59,520
You'll find that fear of the unknown will dissipate, doubt will fade away, and faith

191
00:11:59,520 --> 00:12:02,480
in God's goodness and faithfulness will rise up.

192
00:12:02,480 --> 00:12:09,200
You'll experience the peace and the favor of God just as the angels have proclaimed.

193
00:12:09,200 --> 00:12:10,200
Let me pray for you.

194
00:12:10,200 --> 00:12:15,100
Heavenly Father, you are good, and everything you do is good.

195
00:12:15,100 --> 00:12:19,760
Teach me and my dear listening friends your ways so we will walk in your paths and not

196
00:12:19,760 --> 00:12:21,400
waver in unbelief.

197
00:12:21,400 --> 00:12:26,680
As we look forward to and celebrate the incarnation of Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the

198
00:12:26,680 --> 00:12:32,120
life, let the reality of that take deep root in our hearts so we are all convinced of your

199
00:12:32,120 --> 00:12:34,960
goodness and faithfulness in our lives.

200
00:12:34,960 --> 00:12:40,640
And Lord, let each of these dear ones experience your favor, your peace in their lives and

201
00:12:40,640 --> 00:12:41,640
in their families.

202
00:12:41,640 --> 00:12:46,480
I ask for breakthroughs, miracles, healing, and salvations to visit their homes, their

203
00:12:46,480 --> 00:12:49,160
families, their churches, their communities.

204
00:12:49,160 --> 00:12:53,480
Let them be the beautiful fragrance of Christ to all those they meet.

205
00:12:53,480 --> 00:12:56,200
In Jesus' name, amen.

206
00:12:56,200 --> 00:12:57,960
Merry Christmas, dear ones.
