Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The central prayer in Judaism quotes Deuteronomy 6:4 and begins with the Hebrew word Shema, which is the command to “hear” or “listen.” Jesus quoted this very verse when asked for the most important commandment. The question is: are you listening? Hearing someone requires listening, and listening demonstrates the desire to hear! If you want to hear God, remember to take the time to listen when you pray.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,520
Well, when Jesus was asked what was the most important commandment of all, he quoted what's

2
00:00:06,520 --> 00:00:08,200
known as the Shema.

3
00:00:08,200 --> 00:00:12,880
Shema is the Hebrew word for hear or listen.

4
00:00:12,880 --> 00:00:17,480
So my question for you today is, are you listening?

5
00:00:17,480 --> 00:00:22,600
Well welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional when I try to just share a little

6
00:00:22,600 --> 00:00:29,120
bit of inspiration and bring a little bit of peace to the close of your very busy week.

7
00:00:29,120 --> 00:00:34,400
The Shema is actually the central prayer in all of Judaism.

8
00:00:34,400 --> 00:00:39,040
And the Jewish people around the world pray it several times a day.

9
00:00:39,040 --> 00:00:44,840
The Shema is the first prayer taught to a Jewish child when they start speaking and it

10
00:00:44,840 --> 00:00:49,360
is the last prayer a Jew is taught to say on their deathbed.

11
00:00:49,360 --> 00:00:56,360
It is called Shema because that's the first word of the prayer which is a command to hear

12
00:00:56,360 --> 00:00:59,080
or to listen in English.

13
00:00:59,080 --> 00:01:04,600
The entire daily prayer is composed of three biblical passages.

14
00:01:04,600 --> 00:01:11,040
The first is from Deuteronomy 6.4 which is the commandment to love the Lord thy God with

15
00:01:11,040 --> 00:01:14,840
all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

16
00:01:14,840 --> 00:01:19,920
So this is what this is the part of the prayer I want to focus on today.

17
00:01:19,920 --> 00:01:26,840
When asked to identify the most important commandment of the Bible, Jesus quoted the

18
00:01:26,840 --> 00:01:34,880
Shema and he said, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the

19
00:01:34,880 --> 00:01:41,560
Lord is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,

20
00:01:41,560 --> 00:01:45,240
and with all your mind, and all your strength.

21
00:01:45,240 --> 00:01:48,240
This is the first commandment.

22
00:01:48,240 --> 00:01:54,520
So according to Jesus, this commandment was the foremost biblical commandment for his

23
00:01:54,520 --> 00:01:58,640
disciples and all who would follow him.

24
00:01:58,640 --> 00:02:07,240
So hearing someone is all about listening to them which implies relationship.

25
00:02:07,240 --> 00:02:14,640
God wants a relationship with you and he wants you to care enough about that relationship

26
00:02:14,640 --> 00:02:17,680
to want to listen to him.

27
00:02:17,680 --> 00:02:21,440
So don't just pray and fret.

28
00:02:21,440 --> 00:02:24,480
Be quiet and listen.

29
00:02:24,480 --> 00:02:32,680
Study and learn and you will come to love him with all your heart, with all your soul,

30
00:02:32,680 --> 00:02:34,040
and your strength.

31
00:02:34,040 --> 00:02:39,640
So as you take a little Shabbat break this weekend, take some time to be quiet and just

32
00:02:39,640 --> 00:02:41,720
listen to his voice.

33
00:02:41,720 --> 00:02:45,760
He wants to speak to you so you can get to know him.

34
00:02:45,760 --> 00:02:51,000
The better you know him, the more in love with him you will be.

35
00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:57,400
So Shema, O Israel, and all you followers of the God of Israel.

36
00:02:57,400 --> 00:03:23,440
And with that, I wish you a Shabbat Shalom.
