Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The founding of the State of Israel is nothing less than a miracle. Not only was God working within the Jewish people and through a secular Jewish journalist but a whole movement of Bible-based Christianity was praying and advocating for a restoration of the Jews to their homeland. However, it would take a God who can turn the hearts of kings to bring about the political shakeup at the end of WWI that allowed for the founding of Israel. Seventy years later the opposition to Israel is easily explained by ideologies ruling our day.

8
00:00:41,040 --> 00:00:51,520
Well, welcome to today's Israel Answer episode. We are on part four of connecting the Bible to

9
00:00:51,520 --> 00:00:58,720
today. We have so far discussed the development of Judaism since the Bible, the development of

10
00:00:58,720 --> 00:01:06,560
Christianity since the Bible, that persistent evil of anti-Semitism. And today we're going to talk

11
00:01:06,560 --> 00:01:14,640
about the founding of the modern state of Israel. I believe you will agree with me what a miracle it

12
00:01:14,640 --> 00:01:22,640
is and it reflects a great God who can turn the heart of the King as the Bible tells us whenever

13
00:01:22,640 --> 00:01:29,760
he wants to to fulfill his purposes. So there's lots of history I could tell, but I'm going to

14
00:01:29,760 --> 00:01:36,800
start with the birth of the Zionist movement about 200 years ago. You know, it was started by a

15
00:01:36,800 --> 00:01:44,480
Jewish journalist living in Austria. He was a totally assimilated Jew. He didn't celebrate any of

16
00:01:44,480 --> 00:01:51,600
the Jewish holidays or didn't go to synagogue. And he thought really that the future of the Jewish

17
00:01:51,600 --> 00:02:00,080
people was to be assimilated. And then he went to France where he covered a court case that was taking

18
00:02:00,080 --> 00:02:08,800
place. And it was a totally anti-Semitic court case on trumped-up charges against a Jewish soldier

19
00:02:09,360 --> 00:02:16,960
in the French forces. And this journalist sat there and listened to this. And he came to the

20
00:02:16,960 --> 00:02:24,000
realization there was only one hope for the Jewish people. And that was that they had their own state.

21
00:02:24,640 --> 00:02:31,920
The journalist's name was Theodor Herzl. He went back to Austria and he wrote a book called

22
00:02:31,920 --> 00:02:41,200
The Jewish State. And he laid out his proposal for the creation of one. Now he was just a journalist.

23
00:02:41,200 --> 00:02:47,920
He didn't have any movement behind him. No political following, no political influence,

24
00:02:47,920 --> 00:02:56,400
really. But he had the idea. He saw the need for it and wrote this book. And he said that if the

25
00:02:56,400 --> 00:03:04,880
Jewish people had their own nation, not only could they defend themselves and secure their own future,

26
00:03:04,880 --> 00:03:12,080
but that from there they could combine their power, their willpower, their intellect,

27
00:03:12,720 --> 00:03:20,800
and be a blessing to the world. That's the vision of Zionism. It's to be a blessing to the world.

28
00:03:21,360 --> 00:03:28,240
Now at the same time this was happening, something else had happened that I described last two weeks

29
00:03:28,240 --> 00:03:35,920
ago on our episode about the growth of Christianity. That was that the Bible had been translated into

30
00:03:35,920 --> 00:03:43,120
the everyday language through the printing press. It had been distributed in mass quantities. And now

31
00:03:43,120 --> 00:03:50,640
there were a whole new segment of Christianity that was growing. And it was the Bible-based segment,

32
00:03:50,640 --> 00:03:58,560
or the evangelical segment of Christianity. And it became so strong in England that, and this

33
00:03:58,560 --> 00:04:05,760
movement taught from the scriptures, they saw in the scriptures that God had made all these promises

34
00:04:05,760 --> 00:04:12,160
to the Jewish people and that one day they would be restored to their ancient homeland. And so these

35
00:04:12,160 --> 00:04:20,480
early evangelical Christians in the UK were called restorationists. They prayed for and they advocated

36
00:04:20,480 --> 00:04:27,200
for the restoration of the Jewish people to their homeland. While it just so happens there was one

37
00:04:27,200 --> 00:04:34,720
of these Bible-believing Christians in Austria where Theodor Herzl lived, who had done a complete

38
00:04:34,720 --> 00:04:43,440
study of the book of Daniel and he had come to the conclusion that 1897 was a key year in the

39
00:04:43,440 --> 00:04:52,080
return of the Jews to their ancient homeland. Well, it was in the late 1800s that Theodor Herzl

40
00:04:52,080 --> 00:04:59,360
had just written his book. And this evangelical Christian who was a serving in the British Foreign

41
00:04:59,360 --> 00:05:05,840
Service, he was a chaplain in the British Embassy in Vienna, Austria. He's walking down the street

42
00:05:05,840 --> 00:05:14,560
and he looks in the storefront of a bookstore and he sees this new book by this Jewish journalist

43
00:05:14,560 --> 00:05:20,240
called The Jewish State. He buys a copy, goes straight home, reads it cover to cover, and then

44
00:05:20,240 --> 00:05:28,640
he goes to look for and find Theodor Herzl. When he does, he knocks on his door. Theodor Herzl

45
00:05:28,640 --> 00:05:37,920
opens the door and this British chaplain says to him, I have been waiting for you. You are the

46
00:05:37,920 --> 00:05:44,560
Moses that are going to lead the Jewish people home. And this is the beginning of the story of a

47
00:05:44,560 --> 00:05:51,280
really amazing friendship between this totally assimilated and secular Jewish journalist

48
00:05:51,280 --> 00:05:59,600
and this Bible-believing evangelical restorationist Christian chaplain of the British Foreign Service.

49
00:05:59,600 --> 00:06:07,440
And together they beat the drums and they got before world leaders and they started a movement

50
00:06:07,440 --> 00:06:17,520
in support of the Jewish return to the homeland. And yes, in 1897 Theodor Herzl organized the very

51
00:06:17,520 --> 00:06:26,160
first Zionist Congress. And at that Congress he referred to the few Christians that were in the

52
00:06:26,160 --> 00:06:34,560
audience, referred to them as Christian Zionists. Now while all of this is taking place within

53
00:06:34,560 --> 00:06:41,280
Judaism and within Christianity, there was something else amazing taking place that honestly,

54
00:06:41,280 --> 00:06:45,920
I don't think the state of Israel would have ever been born had this not happened.

55
00:06:45,920 --> 00:06:56,400
That was that the great and the final Islamic Empire called the Ottoman Empire was beginning to

56
00:06:56,400 --> 00:07:04,640
weaken and to decline and they made the fatal mistake of siding with the Germans in World War

57
00:07:04,640 --> 00:07:15,840
I and they lost. And so the Ottoman Empire then was broken up. It was over. It had all come to an end.

58
00:07:16,640 --> 00:07:23,040
And the Allied forces, which were the British, the French and the Italians,

59
00:07:24,320 --> 00:07:30,720
with some support from the Russians, but they broke up the Ottoman Empire and they came up with a

60
00:07:30,720 --> 00:07:39,680
plan to divide it up into smaller nation states to serve the indigenous peoples of those various

61
00:07:39,680 --> 00:07:46,880
areas of the old Ottoman Empire. So what does this mean? This means that before World War I,

62
00:07:47,600 --> 00:07:55,520
the entire North Africa, Middle East, up into Turkey and even into Asia Minor was all one

63
00:07:55,520 --> 00:08:06,080
empire and in the very middle of it was the ancient land of Canaan, the land of Judea and Samaria,

64
00:08:06,080 --> 00:08:12,400
the land that Jesus had lived in, the land we call today Israel, was right there in the heart of

65
00:08:12,400 --> 00:08:21,760
this huge empire. If you had been a Christian in the late 1700s, 1800s, would you have believed

66
00:08:21,760 --> 00:08:29,360
that the Ottoman Empire would be broken up? That after 1300 years of Islamic rule in that area,

67
00:08:29,920 --> 00:08:36,480
that it would be free for a Jewish state to be set up? That would take a lot of faith if you ask me.

68
00:08:37,360 --> 00:08:43,440
But there were Christians that were praying for just that to happen. And for hundreds of years,

69
00:08:43,440 --> 00:08:52,880
Christians were praying for, preaching about, and advocating for the restoration of the Jewish

70
00:08:52,880 --> 00:09:00,880
people to their homeland. And the breakup of the Ottoman Empire not only set into place the legal

71
00:09:00,880 --> 00:09:09,040
context for the state of Israel to be formed, but actually it formed every nation state we have in

72
00:09:09,040 --> 00:09:17,920
the Middle East today. Every single one of them, they did not exist before World War I. So not only

73
00:09:17,920 --> 00:09:24,800
is Israel's founding legal and legitimate, it's the same legal founding that every other country

74
00:09:24,800 --> 00:09:31,760
in the Middle East is based on. Just name it. Whether it's Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab

75
00:09:31,760 --> 00:09:41,120
Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, name it. It all has the same legal foundation. So you have to

76
00:09:41,120 --> 00:09:49,760
understand the battle against Israel today is not really about Palestinian homes or Palestinian

77
00:09:49,760 --> 00:10:00,320
homeland. That's all kind of a recent invention to fight against Israel. Israel has several things

78
00:10:00,320 --> 00:10:06,320
against it in this story. Number one is there was something else that happened after the breakup of

79
00:10:06,320 --> 00:10:13,680
the Ottoman Empire you must understand. That was that there became an Islamic reaction to it,

80
00:10:14,480 --> 00:10:23,360
a fight against it, and a fight to reestablish the Islamic Empire. And that is called the caliphate.

81
00:10:23,360 --> 00:10:32,240
And that movement started by the Muslim Brotherhood. They were formed in Egypt in 1928. And that was to

82
00:10:32,240 --> 00:10:40,160
react against this breakup. And so before you know it, as soon as Israel is founded Jewish

83
00:10:40,160 --> 00:10:47,920
sovereignty over land that had been Islamic, there was an Islamic push against it. But today,

84
00:10:47,920 --> 00:10:56,320
moving forward 70 years, I mean Israel is over 70 years old now. What's the big deal? Because our

85
00:10:56,320 --> 00:11:06,400
world is moving away from nationalism to globalism. So Israel was formed because of a wave of nationalism.

86
00:11:06,400 --> 00:11:12,160
You know, not only did that nationalism break up the Ottoman Empire into all these little nation

87
00:11:12,160 --> 00:11:21,120
states, it broke up the great British Empire. Today it's about national sovereignty. And there's a

88
00:11:21,120 --> 00:11:30,080
push against it now by a whole movement of globalism. Also today, there is a movement of secularism.

89
00:11:30,720 --> 00:11:38,240
And Israel was set up to be a Jewish state. It was for the Jewish people. And it's Jewish sovereignty

90
00:11:38,240 --> 00:11:46,480
over this land. And a secular world hates that. They hate to think that America could be a Christian

91
00:11:46,480 --> 00:11:53,600
nation. And they hate to think that Israel could be a Jewish nation. The other thing against Israel

92
00:11:54,240 --> 00:12:02,160
is the whole move today of moral relativism. And let me tell you, the moral relativists do not like

93
00:12:02,160 --> 00:12:10,160
knowing that there are 10 commandments. And they don't like the people that gave us the 10 commandments.

94
00:12:10,720 --> 00:12:17,200
So this just is a little snippet today to help you understand some of the forces that were taking

95
00:12:17,200 --> 00:12:23,920
place that helped bring about the founding of the state of Israel. And to understand it was totally

96
00:12:23,920 --> 00:12:30,880
a legal founding carried on by the nations. And it was approved by the United Nations even. But the

97
00:12:30,880 --> 00:12:39,840
fight against Israel is because of these other movements of Islamic movements or global secularism

98
00:12:39,840 --> 00:12:48,000
and moral relativism that do not like Israel and continually fight against her. So I hope that this

99
00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:56,560
little summary of many, many years of history and maybe a little oversimplification of it helps you

100
00:12:56,560 --> 00:13:03,040
understand, though, the big picture in Israel's founding. We're going to talk next week with you

101
00:13:03,040 --> 00:13:28,720
about the modern state of Israel. So I'll see you back here. And until then, God bless.
