Out of Zion with Susan Michael

While Jeremiah was the main prophet within the kingdom of Judah, God calls one of the exiles to be the prophet to those in captivity. Ezekiel has tremendous visions beginning with one when God calls him into ministry and the second one when He is taken to Jerusalem and shown the idolatry in the temple. The prophet then observes the departure of the Glory of God over the eastern gate of the temple and from the Mount of Olives. Judgment has begun.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for September 13-19, covering Jeremiah 34; 59-51; Ezekiel 1-23.

Now, let's join our host, Susan Michael.

7
00:00:20,100 --> 00:00:24,880
Well, hey there, we are back.

8
00:00:24,880 --> 00:00:29,240
This is Walk Through the Bible Week 33.

9
00:00:29,240 --> 00:00:36,080
This week we are reading in the Daily Bible the dates of August 13-19 or what are the

10
00:00:36,080 --> 00:00:41,000
pages of 1026 to 1067.

11
00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:43,080
Yahoo!

12
00:00:43,080 --> 00:00:44,880
We are really making progress.

13
00:00:44,880 --> 00:00:47,920
Alright, let's review quickly.

14
00:00:47,920 --> 00:00:53,320
So last week we saw where Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles.

15
00:00:53,320 --> 00:00:57,960
Well, this week Jeremiah is going to send another letter.

16
00:00:57,960 --> 00:01:00,280
This one to Babylon.

17
00:01:00,280 --> 00:01:03,920
I mean this Jeremiah, he doesn't give up, does he?

18
00:01:03,920 --> 00:01:07,680
Very bold and very brave.

19
00:01:07,680 --> 00:01:14,560
And Jeremiah 50 is where we read about this letter that he sends to Babylon where he predicts

20
00:01:14,560 --> 00:01:19,720
the end of Babylon and that Nebuchadnezzar will be punished.

21
00:01:19,720 --> 00:01:26,600
But he ends with that ray of hope, but Israel and Judah will be forgiven.

22
00:01:26,600 --> 00:01:27,920
Let's take a look at it.

23
00:01:27,920 --> 00:01:35,520
According in Jeremiah 50, verse 17, Israel is a scattered flock that lions have chased

24
00:01:35,520 --> 00:01:36,520
away.

25
00:01:36,520 --> 00:01:39,640
The first to devour them was the king of Assyria.

26
00:01:39,640 --> 00:01:44,440
The last to crush their bones was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.

27
00:01:44,440 --> 00:01:51,240
Therefore, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says, I will punish the

28
00:01:51,240 --> 00:01:57,000
king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria.

29
00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:02,920
But I will bring Israel back to their own pasture and they will graze on Carmel and

30
00:02:02,920 --> 00:02:04,320
Bishon.

31
00:02:04,320 --> 00:02:09,120
Their appetite will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.

32
00:02:09,120 --> 00:02:16,040
In those days at that time, declares the Lord, search will be made for Israel's guilt,

33
00:02:16,040 --> 00:02:17,720
but there will be none.

34
00:02:17,720 --> 00:02:26,880
And for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive the remnant I spare.

35
00:02:26,880 --> 00:02:35,120
And then I want to go on to verses 33 through 34 because this has a beautiful concept here.

36
00:02:35,120 --> 00:02:41,080
The people of Israel are oppressed and the people of Judah as well.

37
00:02:41,080 --> 00:02:45,480
All their captives hold them fast, refusing to let them go.

38
00:02:45,480 --> 00:02:49,480
Yet, their Redeemer is strong.

39
00:02:49,480 --> 00:02:53,000
The Lord Almighty is his name.

40
00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:57,760
So don't you worry about the people of Israel and Judah.

41
00:02:57,760 --> 00:03:04,880
Their Redeemer is strong and the Lord Almighty is his name.

42
00:03:04,880 --> 00:03:13,400
My friend, no matter what you're facing, don't worry because your Redeemer is strong and

43
00:03:13,400 --> 00:03:18,240
the Lord Almighty is his name.

44
00:03:18,240 --> 00:03:26,520
The next chapter in Jeremiah 51 verse 5, another beautiful verse, for Israel and Judah

45
00:03:26,520 --> 00:03:33,920
have not been forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, though their land is full of guilt

46
00:03:33,920 --> 00:03:37,280
before the Holy One of Israel.

47
00:03:37,280 --> 00:03:44,560
So the prophets are very clear and here Jeremiah could not be more clear that whereas God had

48
00:03:44,560 --> 00:03:53,000
used this mighty Babylon empire that He was going to judge them for what they'd done

49
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:57,760
to His people and that one day His people are going to come home and they're going

50
00:03:57,760 --> 00:04:05,640
to be forgiven, He has not forsaken them even though they went into exile, even though they

51
00:04:05,640 --> 00:04:11,640
sinned and they rejected Him and He had to punish them and He had to take them into exile

52
00:04:11,640 --> 00:04:20,720
and they've had to suffer this, He has not forsaken His people.

53
00:04:20,720 --> 00:04:30,440
Now at this time we want to turn to the story of Ezekiel and what Jeremiah is to Judah,

54
00:04:30,440 --> 00:04:35,440
Ezekiel is to the captives in Babylon.

55
00:04:35,440 --> 00:04:43,120
And as I went over last year, chronology, Jeremiah is the elder of the three prophets

56
00:04:43,120 --> 00:04:49,720
but then in the first wave of exiles was Daniel who became a prophet in Babylon and he knew

57
00:04:49,720 --> 00:04:56,160
of Jeremiah and he read in Jeremiah about the 70 years of captivity.

58
00:04:56,160 --> 00:05:04,920
Well Ezekiel was in the second wave of exiles which was the largest deportation in 597 and

59
00:05:04,920 --> 00:05:14,680
he also knew of Jeremiah and he knew of Daniel and so he mentions them in his book.

60
00:05:14,680 --> 00:05:22,280
So here Ezekiel 1 tells us about God's call of Ezekiel and it says that it happened in

61
00:05:22,280 --> 00:05:29,520
this 30th year and some scholars debate was it Ezekiel's 30th year or was it the 30th

62
00:05:29,520 --> 00:05:35,480
year since something happened but I think most of them settle on that it was Ezekiel

63
00:05:35,480 --> 00:05:39,760
was 30 years old, it was in his 30th year.

64
00:05:39,760 --> 00:05:48,440
Ezekiel was of a family of priests and so at 30 years of age Ezekiel should have begun

65
00:05:48,440 --> 00:05:56,280
his priesthood in the temple in Jerusalem and here he is sitting by the rivers of Babylon

66
00:05:56,280 --> 00:05:57,960
in exile.

67
00:05:57,960 --> 00:06:03,400
And so it's at that point that God appears to him and calls him to serve him but it's

68
00:06:03,400 --> 00:06:09,680
not going to be as a priest in the temple, it's going to be as a prophet.

69
00:06:09,680 --> 00:06:18,680
And in the beginning of Ezekiel, Ezekiel 1 through 24, we have his prophecies and his

70
00:06:18,680 --> 00:06:26,240
warnings about Judah, the announcement of Judah and about what is coming.

71
00:06:26,240 --> 00:06:36,680
And in chapter 24 then the book of Ezekiel and the story of Ezekiel takes a change and

72
00:06:36,680 --> 00:06:40,520
what happens in chapter 24 we're going to deal with next week.

73
00:06:40,520 --> 00:06:46,040
So this week we're dealing with this first part of Ezekiel's ministry leading up to

74
00:06:46,040 --> 00:06:47,600
that moment.

75
00:06:47,600 --> 00:06:55,160
And also remember now Jerusalem has not yet fallen at this point.

76
00:06:55,160 --> 00:07:04,480
The call of Ezekiel into ministry probably took place around 593 so the temple is still

77
00:07:04,480 --> 00:07:09,280
in place for another seven years.

78
00:07:09,280 --> 00:07:14,840
But he's not there, he's in exile so God raises him up as a prophet to speak to his

79
00:07:14,840 --> 00:07:18,640
people.

80
00:07:18,640 --> 00:07:25,680
Ezekiel has four visions in his book and in his ministry, four major visions I should say.

81
00:07:25,680 --> 00:07:30,360
And the first vision is at the time of his calling which we're going to read about this

82
00:07:30,360 --> 00:07:31,680
week.

83
00:07:31,680 --> 00:07:37,720
And the second vision is when the Lord actually, it says he takes him to Jerusalem and he

84
00:07:37,720 --> 00:07:39,840
sees the temple.

85
00:07:39,840 --> 00:07:44,360
And an amazing vision which we're going to talk about this week.

86
00:07:44,360 --> 00:07:50,240
And then the third vision which we'll cover later is of the Valley of Dry Bones and the

87
00:07:50,240 --> 00:07:54,520
last one of course is of the renewed temple.

88
00:07:54,520 --> 00:08:01,480
And Ezekiel is known as an apocryphal type of book.

89
00:08:01,480 --> 00:08:08,880
Of the visions are full of symbolism and sometimes it's hard for us to relate to all of this

90
00:08:08,880 --> 00:08:11,600
elaborate symbolism.

91
00:08:11,600 --> 00:08:19,160
But it is a certain prophetic style and the symbols all have meaning.

92
00:08:19,160 --> 00:08:23,320
It's just a matter of us studying what they are and what those meanings are.

93
00:08:23,320 --> 00:08:31,080
So this week we're going to be covering in the book of Ezekiel from chapters 1 to 23.

94
00:08:31,080 --> 00:08:38,760
Now I want to focus on not his calling and the vision there as much as the second vision.

95
00:08:38,760 --> 00:08:47,480
When God takes him by vision to Jerusalem and he sees the idolatry in the temple and

96
00:08:47,480 --> 00:08:53,280
then he sees this amazing lifting of the glory of God.

97
00:08:53,280 --> 00:08:55,800
So I want to read this for you here.

98
00:08:55,800 --> 00:09:02,520
This is starting here with verse 18.

99
00:09:02,520 --> 00:09:08,160
Then the glory of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above

100
00:09:08,160 --> 00:09:10,000
the cherubim.

101
00:09:10,000 --> 00:09:14,760
While I watched the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground and as they

102
00:09:14,760 --> 00:09:17,880
went the wheels went with them.

103
00:09:17,880 --> 00:09:23,720
They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord's house.

104
00:09:23,720 --> 00:09:30,160
And the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

105
00:09:30,160 --> 00:09:33,480
Skipping down to verse 22.

106
00:09:33,480 --> 00:09:40,200
On the cherubim with the wheels beside them spread their wings and the glory of the God

107
00:09:40,200 --> 00:09:42,480
of Israel was above them.

108
00:09:42,480 --> 00:09:49,000
The glory of the Lord went up from within the city and stopped above the mountain east

109
00:09:49,000 --> 00:09:50,640
of it.

110
00:09:50,640 --> 00:09:57,200
The Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the exiles in Babylonia in the vision given

111
00:09:57,200 --> 00:09:58,640
by the Spirit of God.

112
00:09:58,640 --> 00:10:03,240
Now I want us to stop here.

113
00:10:03,240 --> 00:10:10,560
Let's talk about what we just read because this is a phenomenal vision and something

114
00:10:10,560 --> 00:10:15,440
you don't hear talked about a lot.

115
00:10:15,440 --> 00:10:20,280
Ezekiel is seeing the glory of God lift up out of the temple.

116
00:10:20,280 --> 00:10:22,680
That's where the presence of God resided.

117
00:10:22,680 --> 00:10:24,760
That's where he met with his people.

118
00:10:24,760 --> 00:10:30,160
And the glory of God was visibly seen there and experienced there.

119
00:10:30,160 --> 00:10:36,360
Where that glory is lifting and it's leaving the temple and it's going east, first it

120
00:10:36,360 --> 00:10:43,800
stops over the eastern gate and then it goes over the mountain to the east of the city

121
00:10:43,800 --> 00:10:50,200
before it's gone and then the vision is over and Ezekiel is back in Babylon.

122
00:10:50,200 --> 00:10:56,320
So what is this eastern gate and what is this mountain to the east of the city?

123
00:10:56,320 --> 00:11:01,400
Well, the mountain to the east of the city is the Mount of Olives.

124
00:11:01,400 --> 00:11:04,720
You've heard me mention it many times.

125
00:11:04,720 --> 00:11:11,600
You have the temple mount here, the key drawn valley and then it goes up to the Mount of

126
00:11:11,600 --> 00:11:13,360
Olives.

127
00:11:13,360 --> 00:11:20,840
So the Spirit of God rested, it stopped over the Mount of Olives before it left and of

128
00:11:20,840 --> 00:11:28,680
course Jesus also stopped and ascended from the Mount of Olives.

129
00:11:28,680 --> 00:11:35,360
And the disciples were told by angels, he will come back just as you've seen him go.

130
00:11:35,360 --> 00:11:41,440
And I believe that means he's going to come back to the Mount of Olives because the Prophet

131
00:11:41,440 --> 00:11:49,720
Zechariah saw the Lord come down on to the Mount of Olives.

132
00:11:49,720 --> 00:11:57,000
So this is an amazing, amazing concept here when you think about it, that the presence

133
00:11:57,000 --> 00:12:02,620
of God left from the Mount of Olives and then it came back to earth in the person of

134
00:12:02,620 --> 00:12:06,640
Jesus and here it left again from the Mount of Olives.

135
00:12:06,640 --> 00:12:14,880
But one day it will return and of course once again in the person of Jesus.

136
00:12:14,880 --> 00:12:22,320
Now the eastern gate of the temple, there was an eastern gate where you entered the

137
00:12:22,320 --> 00:12:30,520
temple mount and then there was an eastern gate that actually entered the temple itself.

138
00:12:30,520 --> 00:12:37,160
But the eastern gate is another very interesting story, the eastern gate of the temple mount.

139
00:12:37,160 --> 00:12:38,960
You've seen it in many pictures.

140
00:12:38,960 --> 00:12:42,160
It is a closed gate.

141
00:12:42,160 --> 00:12:46,800
It's been all bricked over and no one uses it.

142
00:12:46,800 --> 00:12:49,400
No one comes or goes from the eastern gate today.

143
00:12:49,400 --> 00:12:52,280
It's just a part of the wall.

144
00:12:52,280 --> 00:13:01,200
And the story is that back in the, I think, 1500s when the Ottoman Empire had ordered

145
00:13:01,200 --> 00:13:10,080
for the walls of Jerusalem to be rebuilt and so the Muslim Ottoman Turks were there building

146
00:13:10,080 --> 00:13:13,480
the walls of Jerusalem.

147
00:13:13,480 --> 00:13:19,280
First of all they made a mistake and they didn't realize that the ancient city of David

148
00:13:19,280 --> 00:13:22,200
should have been included in the walls.

149
00:13:22,200 --> 00:13:29,120
So that's why today the wall goes, it stays up on top of the hill and to go to the ancient

150
00:13:29,120 --> 00:13:34,320
archaeological dig of the city of David you actually are outside of today's city walls

151
00:13:34,320 --> 00:13:40,600
because these walls were built by the Ottomans, the walls that you see today are 600 years

152
00:13:40,600 --> 00:13:43,720
old, 500 years old and built by the Ottomans.

153
00:13:43,720 --> 00:13:45,440
So that's point number one.

154
00:13:45,440 --> 00:13:52,200
Point number two is the story is, and I don't know that this is really well documented,

155
00:13:52,200 --> 00:14:00,520
but the story is that the Sultan had been told that this eastern gate of the temple

156
00:14:00,520 --> 00:14:06,600
mount that it was rumored that a Jewish messiah was going to come back and he was going to

157
00:14:06,600 --> 00:14:15,560
enter the temple from there, the temple area from there, and he was going to be the ruler

158
00:14:15,560 --> 00:14:16,560
of the area.

159
00:14:16,560 --> 00:14:21,960
Well this area is under the Ottoman Empire and they didn't want this to happen and so

160
00:14:21,960 --> 00:14:26,560
the Sultan ordered that the gates be closed.

161
00:14:26,560 --> 00:14:33,920
And so after the walls were built then the gate was sealed shut and that they placed

162
00:14:33,920 --> 00:14:40,880
a Muslim graveyard right below that gate so you can't get to the gate without treading

163
00:14:40,880 --> 00:14:48,280
over Muslim graves and they felt that that also would keep the Jewish messiah out because

164
00:14:48,280 --> 00:14:53,000
he would not defile himself by treading over graves.

165
00:14:53,000 --> 00:14:58,560
And so today when you go with me to Israel and please sign up down below in the show

166
00:14:58,560 --> 00:15:01,080
notes we have a tour interest list.

167
00:15:01,080 --> 00:15:07,240
Please get on the list as soon as we're able to make plans and set dates for a tour.

168
00:15:07,240 --> 00:15:09,400
We'll let you know when that will be.

169
00:15:09,400 --> 00:15:13,560
But go ahead and just start saving your money now because we will go.

170
00:15:13,560 --> 00:15:18,680
We don't know if it'll be next year or if we'll have to wait longer with all the travel

171
00:15:18,680 --> 00:15:26,240
restrictions but do sign up and when you go you'll see the Eastern Gate all barred up

172
00:15:26,240 --> 00:15:29,520
and the Muslim gravesite right there in front of it.

173
00:15:29,520 --> 00:15:35,400
Of course none of that is going to keep Jesus from returning.

174
00:15:35,400 --> 00:15:40,600
The Book of Zechariah mentions a great earthquake and a splitting of the mountain and I believe

175
00:15:40,600 --> 00:15:42,640
all that's just going to open up.

176
00:15:42,640 --> 00:15:50,880
The messiah will be able to enter the temple area if he's not going to be kept out by this

177
00:15:50,880 --> 00:15:52,560
gate or the graves.

178
00:15:52,560 --> 00:15:58,880
Of course today there is not a temple on the Temple Mount and I'm going to leave that

179
00:15:58,880 --> 00:16:02,440
for a whole other conversation at another time.

180
00:16:02,440 --> 00:16:09,960
But that is this amazing vision that Ezekiel had of the glory of God leaving through the

181
00:16:09,960 --> 00:16:18,320
Eastern Gate and through from the Eastern Mountain.

182
00:16:18,320 --> 00:16:26,200
Now we read another interesting scripture this week in Ezekiel 11 verse 16 and here

183
00:16:26,200 --> 00:16:35,680
the Lord is saying that amongst the exiles that he said I have been a sanctuary for them.

184
00:16:35,680 --> 00:16:41,000
And this is a really key verse for the Jewish people they found a lot of significance in

185
00:16:41,000 --> 00:16:46,440
this why because the exiles are away from the temple.

186
00:16:46,440 --> 00:16:50,880
At this point the temple is still in operation and then of course after that it's completely

187
00:16:50,880 --> 00:16:57,200
destroyed and here these exiles are they're in a foreign land and they don't know what

188
00:16:57,200 --> 00:17:05,280
are they supposed to do how are they supposed to worship and here God says I have been a

189
00:17:05,280 --> 00:17:08,240
sanctuary for them.

190
00:17:08,240 --> 00:17:17,040
And this word sanctuary is one that some rabbis have pointed back to that this was the beginning

191
00:17:17,040 --> 00:17:23,400
of a movement of synagogues that the synagogues never replaced the temple.

192
00:17:23,400 --> 00:17:28,800
The synagogues had a slightly different function even but they were like a little sanctuary.

193
00:17:28,800 --> 00:17:35,480
The synagogues were not a place of worship or of sacrifice or all that took place in

194
00:17:35,480 --> 00:17:40,960
the temple and the synagogues were largely a place of learning and a community gathering

195
00:17:40,960 --> 00:17:48,600
place and a place where they were taught and but some rabbis point back to this verse

196
00:17:48,600 --> 00:17:55,120
as sort of the beginning where they had little sanctuaries there in exile and by the time

197
00:17:55,120 --> 00:18:00,720
of the New Testament synagogues are just everywhere.

198
00:18:00,720 --> 00:18:08,120
Now there's another concept that I want to touch on which I'm not you know this would

199
00:18:08,120 --> 00:18:15,760
take a whole teaching really to really dissect this but I want to acknowledge attention that's

200
00:18:15,760 --> 00:18:21,760
taking place in our story and some of you have may even felt it on the inside and some

201
00:18:21,760 --> 00:18:30,360
of you may have questioned this like why is it saying this and doesn't you know is that

202
00:18:30,360 --> 00:18:35,600
true it's like there's something here so I want to just acknowledge it and get it out

203
00:18:35,600 --> 00:18:44,320
on the table as we walk through this and this is the whole idea of the judgment for corporate

204
00:18:44,320 --> 00:18:52,440
sins versus the judgment for the personal the individual sins and how were these people

205
00:18:52,440 --> 00:19:02,720
punished for the sins of a previous king and so I want to mention this because in 2 Kings

206
00:19:02,720 --> 00:19:15,640
chapter 23 and in 24 and in Jeremiah 15 they all three mention that this judgment is coming

207
00:19:15,640 --> 00:19:23,240
because of the sins of Manasseh and we know Manasseh was an evil king and he really led

208
00:19:23,240 --> 00:19:30,640
the nation astray but then we heard about the good king Josiah and so it's like how

209
00:19:30,640 --> 00:19:37,600
could God still judge his people from an assay if just if Joshua Josiah came along and tried

210
00:19:37,600 --> 00:19:43,640
to lead them in the right way and he got rid of paganism he got rid of the idolatry he

211
00:19:43,640 --> 00:19:53,800
cleaned out the temple so wouldn't that have turned away the judgment and even in our different

212
00:19:53,800 --> 00:20:01,640
books there's a little bit of tension about this so whereas 2 Kings twice kind of put

213
00:20:01,640 --> 00:20:08,680
the blame on Manasseh in chronicles which also tells the same story we go back and forth

214
00:20:08,680 --> 00:20:14,480
between kings and chronicles because they're telling the same stories they never put blame

215
00:20:14,480 --> 00:20:26,320
on Manasseh the writer of chronicles is chronicling the sins of each king and putting blame on

216
00:20:26,320 --> 00:20:34,160
who's ruling then and how their people are behaving then and then we have the prophet

217
00:20:34,160 --> 00:20:43,360
Ezekiel comes out and he really says that the punishment is for the one who sins so

218
00:20:43,360 --> 00:20:51,440
I want to read that it's in Ezekiel 18 says the word of the Lord came to me what do you

219
00:20:51,440 --> 00:20:57,520
people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel and this is the proverb

220
00:20:57,520 --> 00:21:04,600
the parents eat sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge so this means that what

221
00:21:04,600 --> 00:21:12,400
the parents do affects the children and so here as surely as I live declares the sovereign

222
00:21:12,400 --> 00:21:20,160
Lord you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel for everyone belongs to me the parent

223
00:21:20,160 --> 00:21:28,080
as well as the child both alike belong to me and the one who sins is the one who will

224
00:21:28,080 --> 00:21:36,400
die the one who sins is the one who will die jumping down now to verse 20 the one who

225
00:21:36,400 --> 00:21:42,720
sins is the one who will die the child will not share the guilt to the parent nor will the parents

226
00:21:42,720 --> 00:21:48,320
share the guilt of the child the righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them

227
00:21:48,880 --> 00:21:57,520
and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them verse 30 therefore you Israelites

228
00:21:57,520 --> 00:22:04,080
I will judge each of you according to your own ways declares the sovereign Lord repent

229
00:22:04,080 --> 00:22:12,720
turn away from all your offenses then sin will not be your downfall rid yourselves of all the

230
00:22:12,720 --> 00:22:20,320
offenses you have committed and get a new heart and a new spirit why will you die people of Israel

231
00:22:20,320 --> 00:22:30,000
for I take no pleasure in the death of anyone declares the sovereign Lord repent and live

232
00:22:30,000 --> 00:22:38,000
so the prophet Ezekiel here puts it on record this judgment is because of your sin so how do

233
00:22:38,000 --> 00:22:45,760
we reconcile this what is second kings talking about and all I can do is attempt in my own feeble

234
00:22:45,760 --> 00:22:53,840
wording here is to try to describe a situation where menace brought tremendous evil into the kingdom

235
00:22:53,840 --> 00:23:04,480
and he led the people into evil and into idolatry and so he began a major descent here into judgment

236
00:23:05,520 --> 00:23:14,160
it is true that Josiah came along and he wiped out the public worship of the idols he reinstated

237
00:23:14,160 --> 00:23:19,440
and stated true worship of the god of Israel in the temple he went throughout the land

238
00:23:19,440 --> 00:23:28,640
and destroyed the public worship sites but what we now know from archaeology is that during the

239
00:23:28,640 --> 00:23:37,520
time of Josiah that people still had idols in their homes so publicly they were going along with this

240
00:23:38,080 --> 00:23:43,520
but they were still worshiping the idols in private and this is something that we don't

241
00:23:43,520 --> 00:23:50,480
read specifically in our narrative but it's coming out in archaeology they're finding a lot of idols

242
00:23:50,480 --> 00:23:58,080
from that time period and so then even though Josiah is the high point it wasn't high enough

243
00:23:58,080 --> 00:24:06,320
the people still deserve judgment and then of course after Josiah the reign of the next four kings

244
00:24:06,320 --> 00:24:15,120
took Israel deeper and deeper and deeper into sin and they deserved the judgment so

245
00:24:15,840 --> 00:24:20,160
I want to be clear they weren't being judged because it's something that happened you know

246
00:24:20,160 --> 00:24:27,040
50 years earlier they were very much a part of it and they were judged because of it and here the

247
00:24:27,040 --> 00:24:34,960
prophet Ezekiel sets the record straight now one last verse I'll mention as we bring this week to a

248
00:24:34,960 --> 00:24:45,440
close in Ezekiel 21 27 the Lord here says that because of this judgment and because Zedekiah is

249
00:24:45,440 --> 00:24:54,720
going to lose his crown it says the crown will not be restored until given to he to whom it

250
00:24:54,720 --> 00:25:06,400
rightfully belongs shall come to him I will give it and who do you think that that might be but

251
00:25:06,400 --> 00:25:18,000
Messiah King Jesus who came in fulfillment of God's promises to David and to sit on the throne

252
00:25:18,000 --> 00:25:26,400
of David he is the one that that crown belongs to and here the Lord tells Ezekiel the crown will

253
00:25:26,400 --> 00:25:35,760
not be restored until it's given to he to whom it rightfully belongs and he comes to him I will

254
00:25:35,760 --> 00:25:45,280
give it what a beautiful beautiful expectation of the coming king that's going to sit on the throne

255
00:25:45,280 --> 00:25:54,000
of David and the nations will learn more no more and will sit at his feet and worship in peace and

256
00:25:54,000 --> 00:26:01,840
in true true peace and prosperity for the earth that's a day we all look for and long for so
