Out of Zion with Susan Michael

Our God loves to bless His people. But how does He bless them and what does it mean? The Hebrew word for blessing is based on the word for knee. We are to bow the knee to God, the King of the universe. In return He will bestow upon us all the benefits of His kingdom and we will live full and fruitful lives. This is God’s design and desire for His children.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,040
Well you know God loves to bless his people but how does he do it and what is

2
00:00:07,040 --> 00:00:12,920
a blessing what does it mean? Well let's turn to the Bible. Welcome to this week's

3
00:00:12,920 --> 00:00:17,960
Shabbat Shalom devotional. When I try to share just a little inspiration and

4
00:00:17,960 --> 00:00:23,400
bring a little bit of peace to the end of your very busy week. You know the word

5
00:00:23,400 --> 00:00:30,680
to bless or blessing appears in the Bible like over 495 times and it appears

6
00:00:30,680 --> 00:00:37,640
the most 70 times in the first book of the Bible in Genesis. Now what does

7
00:00:37,640 --> 00:00:45,120
blessing mean? Well the word is Baruch which means to like to kneel. It's based

8
00:00:45,120 --> 00:00:53,080
on the word for knee. Blessing is a baraka. Now what does that mean then the

9
00:00:53,080 --> 00:00:57,680
knee? What does the knee have to do with blessing? Well actually blessing means in

10
00:00:57,680 --> 00:01:04,200
a way to worship and to give reverence to and to bow the knee to. So we are to

11
00:01:04,200 --> 00:01:08,520
bless God and in the Jewish blessings they have a blessing over almost

12
00:01:08,520 --> 00:01:15,000
everything and they all start with a Baruch atadonai Elohimelekalam which is

13
00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:21,440
blessed art thou, O Lord God, King of the universe. Blessed art thou, O God, it's a

14
00:01:21,440 --> 00:01:27,400
worship and a bowing the knee to him. So what does it mean when God blesses his

15
00:01:27,400 --> 00:01:33,840
people? He's not bowing the knee to us. He's not worshiping us for sure but it's

16
00:01:33,840 --> 00:01:40,120
within this context of us bowing the knee to him and acknowledging his

17
00:01:40,120 --> 00:01:45,680
greatness, his greatness, that he is our King. He is the great King of the

18
00:01:45,680 --> 00:01:53,080
universe and then he bestows on us all the benefits of his kingdom which is

19
00:01:53,080 --> 00:01:58,760
that he is our King. He will protect us. He will keep us safe. He will care for us.

20
00:01:58,760 --> 00:02:05,800
He has all of these benefits of his kingdom that he then bestows upon us. So

21
00:02:05,800 --> 00:02:11,400
our coming to the Lord with our needs, it's not a gimme, gimme, gimme, listing

22
00:02:11,400 --> 00:02:17,560
my needs of my petitions, no, it's coming and bowing down before him, the King of

23
00:02:17,560 --> 00:02:24,960
the universe, and then watching him bestow all of his blessings on me. Well,

24
00:02:24,960 --> 00:02:32,400
the first earliest mention of blessing we read in Genesis chapter 1 and it says

25
00:02:32,400 --> 00:02:38,120
that after God had made man in his image, made them as male and female, that then

26
00:02:38,120 --> 00:02:47,200
he blessed them and he said to them, be fruitful and multiply and that God blessed

27
00:02:47,200 --> 00:02:55,360
them. So in this God is speaking over to them the benefit of the kingdom which is

28
00:02:55,360 --> 00:03:01,120
to be, have the provision with which to be fruitful and to multiply. Now we know

29
00:03:01,120 --> 00:03:06,240
that in the case of Adam and Eve it was kind of a practical needing to be

30
00:03:06,240 --> 00:03:11,360
fruitful and multiply, have lots of babies and let's fill the earth, right? But

31
00:03:11,360 --> 00:03:16,480
spiritually there is a fruitfulness and a multiplication that we should be

32
00:03:16,480 --> 00:03:22,560
experiencing in our lives as a part of the kingdom of God because as we grow we

33
00:03:22,560 --> 00:03:28,840
should be bearing fruit and God wishes for us that we would grow and that we

34
00:03:28,840 --> 00:03:35,360
would bear great fruit. So as you take a little Shabbat break this weekend, think

35
00:03:35,360 --> 00:03:40,560
about the areas of your life where maybe you're not seeing the fruit of the

36
00:03:40,560 --> 00:03:46,520
kingdom, you're not seeing the peace and joy, you're not seeing the fruitfulness

37
00:03:46,520 --> 00:03:53,200
and the multiplication and then yield those areas to the King of the universe,

38
00:03:53,200 --> 00:03:59,520
bow your knee before him, worship him and watch him pour out the benefits of his

39
00:03:59,520 --> 00:04:24,920
kingdom upon you and watch your life change and with that I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
