Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The Lord gives King Zedekiah one last chance to save Jerusalem from destruction, but he refuses. So, the Babylonians conquer Judah and burn all of Jerusalem including the temple, and a remnant flees to Egypt taking Jeremiah with them. Back in Babylon the prophet Ezekiel begins to prophesy coming events during which God will vindicate His great name. There is hope after all.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for September 27-October 3, covering Jeremiah 37-40; Lamentations 1-5; Ezekiel 33-39.

Now, let's join our host, Susan Michael.

7
00:00:20,300 --> 00:00:25,220
Well, hey there and welcome back.

8
00:00:25,220 --> 00:00:29,540
This is week 35 of our year-long Walk Through the Bible.

9
00:00:29,540 --> 00:00:38,240
We're getting closer and closer to week 52 when we will have accomplished our year-long

10
00:00:38,240 --> 00:00:40,160
reading through the Bible.

11
00:00:40,160 --> 00:00:41,840
So I just want to congratulate you.

12
00:00:41,840 --> 00:00:43,380
You're doing a great job.

13
00:00:43,380 --> 00:00:45,440
You're hanging in there with me.

14
00:00:45,440 --> 00:00:50,440
And at the end of the year, you are going to feel so proud of yourself for having made

15
00:00:50,440 --> 00:00:51,840
it through the Bible.

16
00:00:51,840 --> 00:00:57,040
I know that there's a lot of history and we're sort of deep into the prophetic books and

17
00:00:57,040 --> 00:01:00,760
it seems like our story is moving a little slow.

18
00:01:00,760 --> 00:01:05,720
But please stick with me and I'm going to bring out some interesting things this week

19
00:01:05,720 --> 00:01:08,680
that might not be evident from your reading.

20
00:01:08,680 --> 00:01:14,880
You know, our purpose in this Walk Through the Bible is number one, we want you to understand

21
00:01:14,880 --> 00:01:21,680
the story that's being told behind all the little stories so that as you may get detracted

22
00:01:21,680 --> 00:01:29,680
by a lot of detail, a lot of little incidents that we keep reminding you of that big story.

23
00:01:29,680 --> 00:01:36,600
And then secondly is to also bring out things that just highlight how true and how accurate

24
00:01:36,600 --> 00:01:41,440
the Bible is and how faithful our God is to the Bible.

25
00:01:41,440 --> 00:01:46,960
It is His Word and He is faithful to it and committed to it.

26
00:01:46,960 --> 00:01:53,160
So with that in mind, let's talk about what we read last week and as a review before we

27
00:01:53,160 --> 00:01:55,240
began this week.

28
00:01:55,240 --> 00:02:06,360
So last week we began the siege of Jerusalem and this week, I'm sorry to say, but it's

29
00:02:06,360 --> 00:02:10,040
all over for Jerusalem and Judah.

30
00:02:10,040 --> 00:02:18,960
Now the Lord gives a word to Jeremiah for the king Zedekiah and he tells him the Babylonians

31
00:02:18,960 --> 00:02:26,560
are going to take over Jerusalem, but that he would be saved and in this passage, Jeremiah

32
00:02:26,560 --> 00:02:34,560
mentions or two other cities that are still free and have not yet fallen to the Babylonians.

33
00:02:34,560 --> 00:02:41,360
So I want to read this to you and it is found in Jeremiah 34 verses 6 through 7.

34
00:02:41,360 --> 00:02:47,760
Then Jeremiah the prophet told all of this to Zedekiah the king of Judah in Jerusalem.

35
00:02:47,760 --> 00:02:54,440
While the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of

36
00:02:54,440 --> 00:03:02,200
Judah that were still holding out, Lachish and Ezekiah, these were the only fortified

37
00:03:02,200 --> 00:03:05,520
cities left in Judah.

38
00:03:05,520 --> 00:03:08,080
Now why do I bring this out?

39
00:03:08,080 --> 00:03:15,320
Because of the archaeological evidence found in the city of Lachish that really substantiates

40
00:03:15,320 --> 00:03:21,760
our story and that the city fell in the same year that the city of Jerusalem fell.

41
00:03:21,760 --> 00:03:30,400
So it was one of two cities still holding out and at Lachish they found in the city gates

42
00:03:30,400 --> 00:03:33,040
a pod shirt with a letter written on it.

43
00:03:33,040 --> 00:03:39,720
Now you know letters were not written on paper or papyrus, but they were written on pieces

44
00:03:39,720 --> 00:03:46,960
of clay and these letters were, they weren't very private because it was written on a piece

45
00:03:46,960 --> 00:03:47,960
of clay.

46
00:03:47,960 --> 00:03:51,200
It's not like a piece of paper you could fold up and stick in your pocket and it would

47
00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:53,120
be private.

48
00:03:53,120 --> 00:03:59,840
But they found letters at Lachish and they call these letters Ostrichah and because the

49
00:03:59,840 --> 00:04:06,640
Ostrichah means a piece of clay, a pod shirt that has a letter written on it.

50
00:04:06,640 --> 00:04:14,760
And in one of the Ostrichah found in the gate of Lachish it says this, We are watching the

51
00:04:14,760 --> 00:04:22,160
signals, meaning fire signals, of Lachish according to the code which my Lord gave us,

52
00:04:22,160 --> 00:04:25,560
for we cannot see Ezekiah.

53
00:04:25,560 --> 00:04:33,280
So here a letter from somewhere is being sent to Lachish and it's saying we see your signals,

54
00:04:33,280 --> 00:04:37,240
but we no longer see signals from Ezekiah.

55
00:04:37,240 --> 00:04:42,520
And of course in the scripture in Jeremiah they were the two last remaining cities.

56
00:04:42,520 --> 00:04:49,800
So it could be this letter was written right after that when Ezekiah had already fallen.

57
00:04:49,800 --> 00:04:57,760
And in Jeremiah 38 we have another interesting story here where it names several officials

58
00:04:57,760 --> 00:05:05,400
and how that they had Jeremiah arrested and that they lowered him down into a pit that

59
00:05:05,400 --> 00:05:13,240
was used to hold water and now it just had mud and it said that he was lowered down into

60
00:05:13,240 --> 00:05:17,160
and sunk into the mud at the bottom of this pit.

61
00:05:17,160 --> 00:05:25,520
Well in the first verse of chapter 38 it lists these officials and it lists their names.

62
00:05:25,520 --> 00:05:38,600
It is Shafetia son of Matan, Gatelliah son of Pasur, Yehukal son of Shlamia and Pasur

63
00:05:38,600 --> 00:05:40,920
son of Melchizedek.

64
00:05:40,920 --> 00:05:46,040
Now I'm sure that I didn't pronounce those correctly, but it's four officials and it

65
00:05:46,040 --> 00:05:49,560
says that they are each the son of a certain name.

66
00:05:49,560 --> 00:05:58,920
So the four officials Shafetia, Gatelliah, Yehukal and Shlamia.

67
00:05:58,920 --> 00:06:08,200
Now what is so interesting is that just in the last ten years in the old ancient city

68
00:06:08,200 --> 00:06:16,720
of Jerusalem they have found the seals of two out of four of these officials listed

69
00:06:16,720 --> 00:06:25,120
in Jeremiah 38 verse one and they have found seals for Gatelliah, the son of Pasur and

70
00:06:25,120 --> 00:06:30,480
Yehukal son of Shlamia or Shlamia.

71
00:06:30,480 --> 00:06:40,800
Now remember these seals are called Abullah and the Abullah is inscribed on clay.

72
00:06:40,800 --> 00:06:48,000
Usually these were clay seals, but it can also be inscribed on some kind of metal orwax

73
00:06:48,000 --> 00:06:55,880
and there was a way of putting a person's name on a commercial or legal document of

74
00:06:55,880 --> 00:06:58,560
some form, some form of authentication.

75
00:06:58,560 --> 00:07:06,280
This is their official seal and these seals have survived because the fire in the destruction

76
00:07:06,280 --> 00:07:13,200
of cities would actually harden the clay that many of them were written on.

77
00:07:13,200 --> 00:07:16,040
So they found these two seals.

78
00:07:16,040 --> 00:07:21,960
They found one, I think it was in, I hate to name the years, but they were two years

79
00:07:21,960 --> 00:07:23,120
apart.

80
00:07:23,120 --> 00:07:28,800
They found the two seals within meters of each other, but it took two years before they

81
00:07:28,800 --> 00:07:35,920
found the second one and here they were, not only two amazing seals and not only found

82
00:07:35,920 --> 00:07:45,200
very close to each other, but of two men whose names appeared back to back in Jeremiah 38

83
00:07:45,200 --> 00:07:46,200
verse one.

84
00:07:46,200 --> 00:07:51,600
I just think that stuff is exciting and it really shows how that we can trust our Bible

85
00:07:51,600 --> 00:07:57,840
account is telling us very real stories about very real people.

86
00:07:57,840 --> 00:08:05,520
Now in Jeremiah 38 it goes on to tell the story of how the king Zedekiah was given the

87
00:08:05,520 --> 00:08:09,880
last chance to save Jerusalem.

88
00:08:09,880 --> 00:08:16,200
And I wanted to point this out because I want you to know God's will was not to destroy

89
00:08:16,200 --> 00:08:22,200
Jerusalem or the temple, it wasn't to take his people into exile.

90
00:08:22,200 --> 00:08:27,880
That's not what he wanted at all and that's why he warned them over and over and he pled

91
00:08:27,880 --> 00:08:28,880
with them.

92
00:08:28,880 --> 00:08:38,520
And here at the very last minute he gives King Zedekiah one last chance to save Jerusalem.

93
00:08:38,520 --> 00:08:44,800
The prophet Jeremiah, actually the king summons Jeremiah in secret, he doesn't want anyone

94
00:08:44,800 --> 00:08:50,840
to know that he's turned to Jeremiah to know what the Lord is saying.

95
00:08:50,840 --> 00:08:58,640
And so in here Jeremiah tells him to surrender and Jerusalem will be spared.

96
00:08:58,640 --> 00:09:06,600
But if you don't surrender Jerusalem will burn and you will be captured.

97
00:09:06,600 --> 00:09:14,760
Now God had promised Zedekiah that he wouldn't die but it's very clear here he will be captured.

98
00:09:14,760 --> 00:09:18,560
So he will be taken into captivity.

99
00:09:18,560 --> 00:09:25,600
And Zedekiah is afraid and then he threatens Jeremiah not to tell anyone that he had summoned

100
00:09:25,600 --> 00:09:33,080
Jeremiah or what Jeremiah had told him lest he have Jeremiah killed.

101
00:09:33,080 --> 00:09:39,440
So that was the last chance he did not heed the warning and so right after this we read

102
00:09:39,440 --> 00:09:45,440
about the Babylonians break through the walls of Jerusalem, it is all over.

103
00:09:45,440 --> 00:09:52,560
They set fire to the temple, they set fire to the palace and they set fire to houses

104
00:09:52,560 --> 00:09:56,800
all throughout the city of Jerusalem.

105
00:09:56,800 --> 00:10:03,360
They also carry away the treasures out of the temple and out of the palace and they

106
00:10:03,360 --> 00:10:09,680
take many of the leaders and the men off and the ones that they leave behind it specifically

107
00:10:09,680 --> 00:10:16,120
says the poor people and they're left behind.

108
00:10:16,120 --> 00:10:23,440
And these exiles they're taking captivity and they are going to serve Babylon until

109
00:10:23,440 --> 00:10:26,920
Babylon is no more and Persia takes over.

110
00:10:26,920 --> 00:10:35,600
So until the end of the 70 years that Jeremiah had already prophesied and had already predicted

111
00:10:35,600 --> 00:10:43,000
would be the length of the exile, would be the length of the destruction of Jerusalem.

112
00:10:43,000 --> 00:10:49,920
Now there is lots of archaeological evidence of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.

113
00:10:49,920 --> 00:10:58,120
There is a lot of charcoal within the archaeological findings there in Jerusalem.

114
00:10:58,120 --> 00:11:05,120
They know when the city was burned there's just a lot of evidence to this happening and

115
00:11:05,120 --> 00:11:08,400
when it took place.

116
00:11:08,400 --> 00:11:16,200
Now the Babylonians put Getaliah as governor over Jerusalem.

117
00:11:16,200 --> 00:11:19,680
Of course he's a puppet governor.

118
00:11:19,680 --> 00:11:26,600
He is controlled by them, he is loyal to them, but nevertheless he is put over the affairs

119
00:11:26,600 --> 00:11:28,840
of Jerusalem.

120
00:11:28,840 --> 00:11:34,600
And Jeremiah who was already bound by chains with the rest of the exiles, he was about

121
00:11:34,600 --> 00:11:38,120
to be taken away by the Babylonians.

122
00:11:38,120 --> 00:11:45,440
When the king said that he was to not be taken, he was to be allowed to be free and so they

123
00:11:45,440 --> 00:11:48,880
turned him over to Getaliah.

124
00:11:48,880 --> 00:11:56,000
Now the scripture didn't really explain why, but I think it's pretty clear.

125
00:11:56,000 --> 00:12:00,440
They know that it was Jeremiah that was warning the king to surrender.

126
00:12:00,440 --> 00:12:06,320
They saw him as someone maybe on their side, of course Jeremiah was never on the Babylonian

127
00:12:06,320 --> 00:12:12,760
side, but they knew that of his message, they knew what he had tried to do.

128
00:12:12,760 --> 00:12:15,640
And so they allowed him to live.

129
00:12:15,640 --> 00:12:25,480
So here's Jeremiah, our very lonely prophet who has been preaching now for how many years,

130
00:12:25,480 --> 00:12:28,080
mourning them of this day.

131
00:12:28,080 --> 00:12:35,040
And he's sitting there in the ashes of Jerusalem, mourning the loss of the city.

132
00:12:35,040 --> 00:12:43,000
And so Jeremiah writes what we call today the Book of Lamentations.

133
00:12:43,000 --> 00:12:49,320
The prophet Jeremiah, you may have read this somewhere, that he's known as by theologians

134
00:12:49,320 --> 00:12:51,080
and Bible teachers.

135
00:12:51,080 --> 00:12:53,560
He's known as the weeping prophet.

136
00:12:53,560 --> 00:13:03,000
And that's because in his book, in Jeremiah 13-17, he talks about his tears of mourning.

137
00:13:03,000 --> 00:13:09,480
And he describes God's tears in chapter 9.

138
00:13:09,480 --> 00:13:17,640
So then when he writes the Book of Lamentations, I mean what a moving set of poems.

139
00:13:17,640 --> 00:13:20,440
Lamentations is actually a set of five poems.

140
00:13:20,440 --> 00:13:23,400
Each chapter is a separate poem.

141
00:13:23,400 --> 00:13:30,120
And it is lamenting and mourning the loss of Jerusalem, the loss of the temple, the loss

142
00:13:30,120 --> 00:13:36,320
of their freedom and their independence, the loss of the presence of God.

143
00:13:36,320 --> 00:13:44,800
And in chapter 1, verse 16, the prophet Jeremiah, who we believe is the writer of this book,

144
00:13:44,800 --> 00:13:51,400
says, This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears.

145
00:13:51,400 --> 00:13:57,960
And in chapter 2, verse 7, he says that the Lord has abandoned his sanctuary.

146
00:13:57,960 --> 00:14:04,640
Remember last week I talked about how that Ezekiel saw by vision the spirit of God, the

147
00:14:04,640 --> 00:14:10,640
presence of God, abandoned the temple and abandoned the city of Jerusalem.

148
00:14:10,640 --> 00:14:16,320
And he left, which of course left it open for destruction.

149
00:14:16,320 --> 00:14:22,000
And Jeremiah here laments that God has abandoned his sanctuary.

150
00:14:22,000 --> 00:14:28,360
And then in chapter 2, 11, he says, My eyes fail from weeping.

151
00:14:28,360 --> 00:14:37,840
But by chapter 3, he breaks into an acknowledgement of God's faithfulness.

152
00:14:37,840 --> 00:14:43,520
And it's a beautiful turn in such a sad book of lamentations.

153
00:14:43,520 --> 00:14:53,240
And in chapter 3, 22, he says, Because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed.

154
00:14:53,240 --> 00:14:56,400
For his compassion never fail.

155
00:14:56,400 --> 00:14:59,520
They are new every morning.

156
00:14:59,520 --> 00:15:02,280
Great is your faithfulness.

157
00:15:02,280 --> 00:15:09,640
How many times have we sung that verse or have repeated that verse?

158
00:15:09,640 --> 00:15:11,120
Great is that faithfulness.

159
00:15:11,120 --> 00:15:15,440
Oh Lord, your mercies are new every morning.

160
00:15:15,440 --> 00:15:19,680
Your compassion they fail not.

161
00:15:19,680 --> 00:15:25,640
Now that you hear it within its context, this is Jeremiah sitting in the midst of a destroyed

162
00:15:25,640 --> 00:15:31,240
city, probably covered with the ashes of the city.

163
00:15:31,240 --> 00:15:37,960
And yet he says, Because of your goodness, God, we are not consumed.

164
00:15:37,960 --> 00:15:40,360
Jeremiah still lives.

165
00:15:40,360 --> 00:15:44,800
There is still a remnant in the holy city.

166
00:15:44,800 --> 00:15:47,720
And he says, For your compassion never fail.

167
00:15:47,720 --> 00:15:50,600
They are new every morning.

168
00:15:50,600 --> 00:15:54,800
Great is your faithfulness.

169
00:15:54,800 --> 00:15:57,960
Just three verses later, verse 25.

170
00:15:57,960 --> 00:16:01,440
The Lord is good to those who hope in him.

171
00:16:01,440 --> 00:16:04,200
To the one who seeks him.

172
00:16:04,200 --> 00:16:09,600
It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

173
00:16:09,600 --> 00:16:16,720
Maybe just picture the prophet sitting there in the ruins saying these, The Lord is good

174
00:16:16,720 --> 00:16:19,640
to those who hope in him.

175
00:16:19,640 --> 00:16:25,240
And this is what Jeremiah had pled with the leaders for how many years.

176
00:16:25,240 --> 00:16:28,000
Just hope in the Lord.

177
00:16:28,000 --> 00:16:32,480
Turn to the Lord and be saved from this.

178
00:16:32,480 --> 00:16:34,440
But they wouldn't do it.

179
00:16:34,440 --> 00:16:41,240
But Jeremiah knows, even in the midst of the ruins, that God is faithful and that those

180
00:16:41,240 --> 00:16:48,760
who do hope in him or would have hoped in him would have been saved.

181
00:16:48,760 --> 00:16:54,240
In verse 31, For no one is cast off by the Lord forever.

182
00:16:54,240 --> 00:16:58,560
Though he brings grief, he will show compassion.

183
00:16:58,560 --> 00:17:06,200
So great is his unfailing love, for he does not willingly bring affliction or grief on

184
00:17:06,200 --> 00:17:07,720
anyone.

185
00:17:07,720 --> 00:17:10,680
And I want to put an exclamation point here.

186
00:17:10,680 --> 00:17:13,480
It's important that we know this.

187
00:17:13,480 --> 00:17:19,840
God does not willingly bring affliction or grief on anyone.

188
00:17:19,840 --> 00:17:21,520
It is our sin.

189
00:17:21,520 --> 00:17:23,000
It is our actions.

190
00:17:23,000 --> 00:17:30,000
It is our refusal to trust in him, to hope in him, to walk with him, to obey him.

191
00:17:30,000 --> 00:17:38,000
That's what brings the affliction and the grief into our lives.

192
00:17:38,000 --> 00:17:44,720
Moving on into Lamentations 4, chapter 4, verse 13, after the prophet describes the

193
00:17:44,720 --> 00:17:49,000
enemies actually entering, it's like who would have thought that the enemies could

194
00:17:49,000 --> 00:17:50,520
have entered Jerusalem.

195
00:17:50,520 --> 00:17:56,960
And he says this, But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities

196
00:17:56,960 --> 00:18:03,280
of her priests who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

197
00:18:03,280 --> 00:18:08,320
So Jeremiah knows who's to blame for this destruction.

198
00:18:08,320 --> 00:18:10,520
He doesn't blame God.

199
00:18:10,520 --> 00:18:16,160
He blames the sin of the people.

200
00:18:16,160 --> 00:18:23,720
Now moving on with our story and going to Jeremiah 40 through 44, it tells about during

201
00:18:23,720 --> 00:18:31,080
this time, of course, even amongst the remnant left in Judah, there's rebellion.

202
00:18:31,080 --> 00:18:37,720
And there is one of the people that rise up against Getteliah and they have him assassinated

203
00:18:37,720 --> 00:18:40,680
and they kill 70 of the leaders.

204
00:18:40,680 --> 00:18:43,440
That's a lot of leaders for just a remnant.

205
00:18:43,440 --> 00:18:45,600
It probably killed over half of the leaders.

206
00:18:45,600 --> 00:18:52,280
I mean, this is a devastating blow to the people left there in Jerusalem and in Judah.

207
00:18:52,280 --> 00:18:53,440
But they are killed.

208
00:18:53,440 --> 00:19:01,560
And so God tells those who are left when they turn to the Lord, he says, Stay.

209
00:19:01,560 --> 00:19:03,240
And that he would build them up.

210
00:19:03,240 --> 00:19:08,880
He said, If you go to Egypt, sword and famine will follow you.

211
00:19:08,880 --> 00:19:10,600
So what do they do?

212
00:19:10,600 --> 00:19:13,240
They still have not learned their lesson.

213
00:19:13,240 --> 00:19:16,440
They still have not learned how to obey the Lord.

214
00:19:16,440 --> 00:19:18,080
And what do they do?

215
00:19:18,080 --> 00:19:20,960
They go off to Egypt.

216
00:19:20,960 --> 00:19:23,240
And what did they do?

217
00:19:23,240 --> 00:19:27,840
They took Jeremiah with them against his wishes.

218
00:19:27,840 --> 00:19:30,400
He was the one that had told them, Don't go.

219
00:19:30,400 --> 00:19:32,880
The Lord will build us up here.

220
00:19:32,880 --> 00:19:36,360
But no, they take him to Egypt.

221
00:19:36,360 --> 00:19:43,680
And here in, I believe it's chapter 40, it talks about the Jews that are there throughout

222
00:19:43,680 --> 00:19:49,880
Egypt and it mentions locations in both Upper Egypt and in Lower Egypt.

223
00:19:49,880 --> 00:19:54,000
Well, I just point out something interesting.

224
00:19:54,000 --> 00:20:01,640
You know, we think here as Americans, we think Upper would be North and Lower would be South,

225
00:20:01,640 --> 00:20:02,640
right?

226
00:20:02,640 --> 00:20:09,160
Upper Egypt would actually be the North of Egypt, which is along the Mediterranean coast.

227
00:20:09,160 --> 00:20:14,800
And as you go down the Nile River to the South, to the bottom of Egypt on the map, you would

228
00:20:14,800 --> 00:20:19,960
think that is Lower Egypt, but actually it is the opposite.

229
00:20:19,960 --> 00:20:26,520
And the Nile River flows from the South to the North and empties into the Mediterranean.

230
00:20:26,520 --> 00:20:31,320
And so the South of Egypt is known as Upper Egypt.

231
00:20:31,320 --> 00:20:35,160
And the North of Egypt is Lower Egypt.

232
00:20:35,160 --> 00:20:39,640
Not that that matters at all to our story, but just a little interesting piece of information.

233
00:20:39,640 --> 00:20:47,160
And so Jeremiah begins to prophesy to the Israelites, to the Jews that are in Egypt,

234
00:20:47,160 --> 00:20:52,440
because he sees that they are very influenced by the paganism of Egypt.

235
00:20:52,440 --> 00:20:56,520
And he has very strong oracles against Egypt.

236
00:20:56,520 --> 00:21:01,800
And he predicts the fall of Egypt, and he has oracles against the Jews there and their

237
00:21:01,800 --> 00:21:04,880
worship of the Queen of Heaven.

238
00:21:04,880 --> 00:21:08,760
But it says that they continue to burn incense to the Queen of Heaven.

239
00:21:08,760 --> 00:21:14,880
And I just can't imagine the prophet Jeremiah after all that he's been through, he ends

240
00:21:14,880 --> 00:21:23,440
his life in Egypt in a foreign land taken there against his will, surrounded once again

241
00:21:23,440 --> 00:21:26,680
by what?

242
00:21:26,680 --> 00:21:27,680
Paganism.

243
00:21:27,680 --> 00:21:33,120
And he's once again called to speak warnings of coming destruction.

244
00:21:33,120 --> 00:21:38,360
After all these years, wouldn't you think that maybe he'd have a little bit of respite,

245
00:21:38,360 --> 00:21:43,360
be able to go to his property that he purchased there outside of Jerusalem, and at least

246
00:21:43,360 --> 00:21:49,800
have his own little vine and his own little vineyard do something to end his life in peace,

247
00:21:49,800 --> 00:21:54,080
even in the midst of destruction, but no, no, he ends up in Egypt.

248
00:21:54,080 --> 00:21:57,320
And this is the way his ministry eventually comes to an end.

249
00:21:57,320 --> 00:22:05,000
We don't know exactly when Jeremiah dies, but most assume that he died in Egypt.

250
00:22:05,000 --> 00:22:13,160
So then this takes us to our second great prophet of the week, and this is Ezekiel.

251
00:22:13,160 --> 00:22:21,720
So Ezekiel, who is out in Babylon and is ministering to the exiles there and saw the

252
00:22:21,720 --> 00:22:26,560
spirit of God leave Jerusalem in a vision.

253
00:22:26,560 --> 00:22:36,000
Now he begins to move into a series of visions that are about the future and are about restoration.

254
00:22:36,000 --> 00:22:39,600
And so we read three of them this week.

255
00:22:39,600 --> 00:22:46,120
So we're reading in Ezekiel chapters 33 through 39.

256
00:22:46,120 --> 00:22:57,280
And I want to focus on one of them, which is out of Ezekiel 36, because this is a really

257
00:22:57,280 --> 00:23:04,120
key portion of our prophecies this week that repeats some themes we've talked about in

258
00:23:04,120 --> 00:23:07,640
previous weeks that I want to bring out to you.

259
00:23:07,640 --> 00:23:16,760
So looking at Ezekiel 36, I'm not going to read all of it, but from verses 16 actually

260
00:23:16,760 --> 00:23:18,440
to 32.

261
00:23:18,440 --> 00:23:25,360
So I'm not going to read all of the verses, but starting here with verse 17, Son of Man,

262
00:23:25,360 --> 00:23:31,200
when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct

263
00:23:31,200 --> 00:23:33,760
and their actions.

264
00:23:33,760 --> 00:23:39,120
And their conduct was like a woman's monthly uncleanness in my sight.

265
00:23:39,120 --> 00:23:45,320
So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they

266
00:23:45,320 --> 00:23:49,000
had defiled it with their many idols.

267
00:23:49,000 --> 00:23:54,960
So I want to point out here, there was a defilement of God's land through both the shedding of

268
00:23:54,960 --> 00:23:59,400
blood and of idolatry.

269
00:23:59,400 --> 00:24:06,280
So he says so in verse 19, I dispersed them among the nations and I scattered them through

270
00:24:06,280 --> 00:24:12,480
the countries and I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.

271
00:24:12,480 --> 00:24:18,840
And wherever they went among the nations, they profaned my holy name, for it was said

272
00:24:18,840 --> 00:24:25,240
of them, these are the Lord's people and yet they had to leave his land.

273
00:24:25,240 --> 00:24:33,400
I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations

274
00:24:33,400 --> 00:24:34,920
where they had gone.

275
00:24:34,920 --> 00:24:38,560
Okay, I am going to continue reading every verse.

276
00:24:38,560 --> 00:24:41,200
So verse 22, it's just so rich.

277
00:24:41,200 --> 00:24:47,840
Verse 22, therefore say to the Israelites, this is what the sovereign Lord says.

278
00:24:47,840 --> 00:24:52,720
It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I'm going to do these things.

279
00:24:52,720 --> 00:24:58,840
But for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you

280
00:24:58,840 --> 00:25:04,920
have gone, I will show the holiness of my great name which has been profaned among the

281
00:25:04,920 --> 00:25:09,160
nations, the name you have profaned among them.

282
00:25:09,160 --> 00:25:16,760
Then the nations will know that I am the Lord declares the sovereign Lord when I am proved

283
00:25:16,760 --> 00:25:21,600
holy through you before their eyes.

284
00:25:21,600 --> 00:25:23,760
Now let's take a break here.

285
00:25:23,760 --> 00:25:29,840
How is God going to vindicate his name?

286
00:25:29,840 --> 00:25:33,760
How is he going to prove himself holy?

287
00:25:33,760 --> 00:25:36,760
How is he going to show the holiness of his great name?

288
00:25:36,760 --> 00:25:39,280
What is it he is about to do?

289
00:25:39,280 --> 00:25:42,680
Well we read it in the next verse where he says, because I am going to take you out of

290
00:25:42,680 --> 00:25:46,600
the nations and I am going to gather you back to your land.

291
00:25:46,600 --> 00:25:47,760
Let's read it.

292
00:25:47,760 --> 00:25:54,120
Verse 24, For I will take you out of the nations, I will gather you from all the countries and

293
00:25:54,120 --> 00:25:57,720
bring you back into your land.

294
00:25:57,720 --> 00:26:01,200
I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean.

295
00:26:01,200 --> 00:26:05,720
I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.

296
00:26:05,720 --> 00:26:09,720
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.

297
00:26:09,720 --> 00:26:15,040
I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

298
00:26:15,040 --> 00:26:21,560
And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep

299
00:26:21,560 --> 00:26:23,840
my laws.

300
00:26:23,840 --> 00:26:27,800
Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors.

301
00:26:27,800 --> 00:26:32,880
You will be my people and I will be your God.

302
00:26:32,880 --> 00:26:36,640
Whoa, let's back up.

303
00:26:36,640 --> 00:26:38,560
What did we just read?

304
00:26:38,560 --> 00:26:48,680
We just read three steps that God is going to do that is going to show his holiness to

305
00:26:48,680 --> 00:26:50,480
the nations.

306
00:26:50,480 --> 00:27:00,680
It's going to be a vindication of his name.

307
00:27:00,680 --> 00:27:01,680
And what is that?

308
00:27:01,680 --> 00:27:08,040
Number one, I am going to take you out of the nations and I am going to gather you from

309
00:27:08,040 --> 00:27:11,640
all the countries and bring you back to your land.

310
00:27:11,640 --> 00:27:12,720
That's point number one.

311
00:27:12,720 --> 00:27:15,360
He's just going to bring them back.

312
00:27:15,360 --> 00:27:21,280
Then point number two, I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean.

313
00:27:21,280 --> 00:27:28,120
And he describes here a spiritual cleansing of the people.

314
00:27:28,120 --> 00:27:31,280
And then he uses that new covenant language.

315
00:27:31,280 --> 00:27:37,040
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.

316
00:27:37,040 --> 00:27:42,120
He says, I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

317
00:27:42,120 --> 00:27:51,320
And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep

318
00:27:51,320 --> 00:27:53,120
my laws.

319
00:27:53,120 --> 00:27:58,560
Remember we talked last week about this new covenant and that the difference in this new

320
00:27:58,560 --> 00:28:05,680
covenant is that we would be made clean so that he could place his holy spirit within

321
00:28:05,680 --> 00:28:06,780
us.

322
00:28:06,780 --> 00:28:11,520
And that spirit would actually write on our hearts the law.

323
00:28:11,520 --> 00:28:18,480
It says here we would actually be moved by the holy spirit to be in obedience to his

324
00:28:18,480 --> 00:28:19,560
law.

325
00:28:19,560 --> 00:28:22,240
That's the new covenant my friends.

326
00:28:22,240 --> 00:28:32,840
And then step three here with verse 28, then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors.

327
00:28:32,840 --> 00:28:37,600
You will be my people and I will be your God.

328
00:28:37,600 --> 00:28:45,280
So this spiritual restoration through the new covenant is absolutely necessary for the

329
00:28:45,280 --> 00:28:53,400
people of Israel to be able to remain and live in the land without future exile.

330
00:28:53,400 --> 00:29:00,000
And so when we look at the modern day return of the Jewish people to their land, I believe

331
00:29:00,000 --> 00:29:03,440
we are in the days of the fulfillment of this scripture.

332
00:29:03,440 --> 00:29:09,600
Yes there was an earlier return from Babylon but it was a very limited return.

333
00:29:09,600 --> 00:29:15,680
Compared to what we have seen in the last 150 years, we have seen a return from over

334
00:29:15,680 --> 00:29:20,960
150 nations around the world.

335
00:29:20,960 --> 00:29:23,160
That is phenomenal.

336
00:29:23,160 --> 00:29:28,240
And we are seeing this physical return of the Jewish people to the land.

337
00:29:28,240 --> 00:29:33,240
And we know though that there is a next step and that is when the Lord draws his people

338
00:29:33,240 --> 00:29:35,080
unto himself.

339
00:29:35,080 --> 00:29:40,760
And there is a day of spiritual restoration and an outpouring of the holy spirit upon

340
00:29:40,760 --> 00:29:48,000
the nation where they will be now obedient, they will be filled by his holy spirit and

341
00:29:48,000 --> 00:29:54,520
walking in fellowship with him and therefore they will be a holy people able to remain

342
00:29:54,520 --> 00:29:56,680
on this holy land.

343
00:29:56,680 --> 00:30:01,240
These are the days I believe that we are living in.

344
00:30:01,240 --> 00:30:06,280
We are just still between part one and part two of this verse.

345
00:30:06,280 --> 00:30:12,440
But there are glorious days ahead for Israel and a day of spiritual renewal.

346
00:30:12,440 --> 00:30:16,120
That is Ezekiel 36.

347
00:30:16,120 --> 00:30:23,120
Then we have to mention before we close today Ezekiel 37, this amazing vision that the

348
00:30:23,120 --> 00:30:27,840
prophet has of the valley of dry bones.

349
00:30:27,840 --> 00:30:29,720
This I will just let you read it.

350
00:30:29,720 --> 00:30:31,640
I am not going to read it for you.

351
00:30:31,640 --> 00:30:38,600
But read it and you are going to see a miraculous restoration of the Jewish people almost like

352
00:30:38,600 --> 00:30:40,600
life from the dead.

353
00:30:40,600 --> 00:30:48,200
And not just from the dead, but from being so dead that they are like dried up bones.

354
00:30:48,200 --> 00:30:53,960
There is nothing left but bones and yet the Lord resurrects them.

355
00:30:53,960 --> 00:30:56,760
He breathes his spirit into them.

356
00:30:56,760 --> 00:31:05,440
He brings life, they are covered by flesh and he breathes his life into his people.

357
00:31:05,440 --> 00:31:08,320
And it says they are like a mighty army.

358
00:31:08,320 --> 00:31:11,040
And then he says, and no longer are they two nations.

359
00:31:11,040 --> 00:31:17,280
No more is there Israel and Judah, but they have been twined together as one nation in

360
00:31:17,280 --> 00:31:19,440
complete unity.

361
00:31:19,440 --> 00:31:26,320
And then in chapter 37 verses 24 through 28 he describes here that he will then make a

362
00:31:26,320 --> 00:31:34,080
covenant of peace with them and it will be an everlasting covenant.

363
00:31:34,080 --> 00:31:39,520
That again my friends is what we just talked about in Ezekiel 36, what we talked about

364
00:31:39,520 --> 00:31:42,480
last week with that new covenant.

365
00:31:42,480 --> 00:31:47,520
He is going to bring them back from the land even if it is like raising dead bones up and

366
00:31:47,520 --> 00:31:51,720
bringing life to them and bringing them back to their land.

367
00:31:51,720 --> 00:31:57,400
And then he is going to make this covenant of peace with them and it is an everlasting

368
00:31:57,400 --> 00:31:59,280
covenant.

369
00:31:59,280 --> 00:32:03,080
They will never be exiled again.

370
00:32:03,080 --> 00:32:08,160
They will now be his people and he will be their God.

371
00:32:08,160 --> 00:32:13,240
Now as we close I have to mention of course you are also going to be reading about the

372
00:32:13,240 --> 00:32:16,840
famous battle of Gog and Magog.

373
00:32:16,840 --> 00:32:21,880
And I know that you have probably heard different teachings about it.

374
00:32:21,880 --> 00:32:24,040
You may have major questions.

375
00:32:24,040 --> 00:32:25,240
What is this all about?

376
00:32:25,240 --> 00:32:33,240
And I will say that this depiction of a great battle has a lot of symbolism in it.

377
00:32:33,240 --> 00:32:40,160
No one can say for sure who is Gog and where is Magog and what are these other places and

378
00:32:40,160 --> 00:32:43,280
how do they relate to today's map.

379
00:32:43,280 --> 00:32:47,920
I am sorry there are lots of theories but nobody can really know for sure.

380
00:32:47,920 --> 00:32:54,920
But what we have to do is in situations like this take a step back and look at the overall

381
00:32:54,920 --> 00:32:55,920
story.

382
00:32:55,920 --> 00:32:56,920
What are we being told here?

383
00:32:56,920 --> 00:33:04,400
We are told about a battle by which evil is destroyed forever.

384
00:33:04,400 --> 00:33:12,480
And yes it is a great battle with great destruction but it is a destruction of evil and it is

385
00:33:12,480 --> 00:33:16,760
an eternal destruction of evil.

386
00:33:16,760 --> 00:33:20,160
So that does our reading for this week.

387
00:33:20,160 --> 00:33:26,640
I hope you enjoy reading through these amazing visions that were given to Ezekiel.

388
00:33:26,640 --> 00:33:28,840
Take in Ezekiel 36.

389
00:33:28,840 --> 00:33:29,840
Read it over.

390
00:33:29,840 --> 00:33:31,720
Mark it in your Bible.

391
00:33:31,720 --> 00:33:37,880
I think it really describes the days that we are in and what we can be looking forward

392
00:33:37,880 --> 00:33:39,680
to in the future.

393
00:33:39,680 --> 00:33:46,720
So I will see you back here next week and until then, God bless.

394
00:33:46,720 --> 00:33:50,600
