Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The longest Psalm in the Bible—Psalm 119—is about the importance of the Word of God. Psalms 113-118 are known as the Hallel and are sung at every major Jewish festival. The Hallel contains the great messianic Psalm 118 which was quoted both by and about Jesus. This prophetic Psalm along with Psalm 83 provide important insight for us today regarding the calling on the Jewish people and how evil forces have opposed it.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for May 31-June 6, covering Various Psalms.

6
00:00:16,120 --> 00:00:20,200
Now, let's join our host, Susan Michael.

7
00:00:20,200 --> 00:00:24,560
Well, hey there and welcome back.

8
00:00:24,560 --> 00:00:28,140
This is Walk Through the Bible Week 18.

9
00:00:28,140 --> 00:00:36,360
This week we are reading in the Daily Bible what is pages 540 through 574 or the dates

10
00:00:36,360 --> 00:00:41,560
in the Daily Bible of April the 30th through May the 6th.

11
00:00:41,560 --> 00:00:46,160
We are still deep into the reading of the Psalms.

12
00:00:46,160 --> 00:00:52,280
We're reading through a group of about 112 of the 150 Psalms and these 112, we don't

13
00:00:52,280 --> 00:00:54,640
know exactly when they were written.

14
00:00:54,640 --> 00:01:00,280
So the editor of the Daily Bible has arranged them by type and he came up with four different

15
00:01:00,280 --> 00:01:01,720
types.

16
00:01:01,720 --> 00:01:10,080
Last week we read through those that are for a troubled soul and then we read those about

17
00:01:10,080 --> 00:01:18,120
righteousness and wickedness and this week we're reading the Psalms of joy and praise.

18
00:01:18,120 --> 00:01:27,480
And this week we got to read the longest Psalm, in fact the longest chapter of any book in

19
00:01:27,480 --> 00:01:38,400
the entire Bible and that Psalm 119 which goes on and on and on extolling the greatness

20
00:01:38,400 --> 00:01:40,680
of God's Word.

21
00:01:40,680 --> 00:01:51,480
You know it's divided up into 22 stanzas which corresponds to the 22 Hebrew letters.

22
00:01:51,480 --> 00:01:59,320
So I'm hoping that you checked it out on verse 161.

23
00:01:59,320 --> 00:02:08,680
It began the section under the Hebrew letter of the Shin or Shin and this letter I told

24
00:02:08,680 --> 00:02:17,920
you about earlier that it stands for the name of God and I talked about in an earlier episode

25
00:02:17,920 --> 00:02:24,120
how that the high priest when they pronounce the priestly blessing over the people they

26
00:02:24,120 --> 00:02:33,160
would hold their hands up like this so that it formed a sheen and that that very symbol

27
00:02:33,160 --> 00:02:40,720
was then picked up in the Star Trek series and became the sign of the Vulcans and so

28
00:02:40,720 --> 00:02:47,720
I wanted you to make sure that you saw that letter sheen as I've been describing it there

29
00:02:47,720 --> 00:02:52,240
right before verse 161.

30
00:02:52,240 --> 00:03:00,120
Verses 1 and 2, I want to read to you a few parts of Psalm 119 but verses 1 and 2, just

31
00:03:00,120 --> 00:03:08,000
bless it are those whose ways are blameless who walk according to the law of the Lord.

32
00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:12,800
I mean it just opens right up just jumps right to it.

33
00:03:12,800 --> 00:03:20,640
Blessed are the righteous, the ones that obey the Lord that walk in obedience to his commandments

34
00:03:20,640 --> 00:03:25,360
that follow the Torah, the law of the Lord.

35
00:03:25,360 --> 00:03:27,240
They're the ones that are blessed.

36
00:03:27,240 --> 00:03:34,400
Right there, verses 1 through 2, the rest of it is just an elaboration of those verses.

37
00:03:34,400 --> 00:03:39,520
There are so many verses I won't attempt to read through it but I do want to point out

38
00:03:39,520 --> 00:03:48,600
verse number 20 where it says, my soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all

39
00:03:48,600 --> 00:03:49,600
times.

40
00:03:49,600 --> 00:04:02,080
How many of us can say that, that my soul is consumed with a longing for God's law,

41
00:04:02,080 --> 00:04:05,160
his word, his Torah, his instruction.

42
00:04:05,160 --> 00:04:08,240
Wow, that is so beautiful.

43
00:04:08,240 --> 00:04:17,560
I'm going to jump down and read to you a very famous verse, verse 105.

44
00:04:17,560 --> 00:04:24,120
Your word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path.

45
00:04:24,120 --> 00:04:33,520
This is why it's so important for us to spend time in God's word because it is a lamp to

46
00:04:33,520 --> 00:04:34,760
our feet.

47
00:04:34,760 --> 00:04:39,840
If we want to know what's God's will for our life, if we want to know about a certain

48
00:04:39,840 --> 00:04:46,480
step that we need to take, should I take this job or not, or should I go here or do that,

49
00:04:46,480 --> 00:04:51,800
should I marry this person, should I this, should I what, it's his word that is a lamp

50
00:04:51,800 --> 00:04:53,520
to our feet.

51
00:04:53,520 --> 00:04:58,480
And the more we know that word, it's going to give us guidance, it's going to light

52
00:04:58,480 --> 00:05:07,160
that path that we need to walk on, step by step that will know his will because of the

53
00:05:07,160 --> 00:05:09,400
light of his word.

54
00:05:09,400 --> 00:05:13,960
Another verse I want to read to you is verse 72.

55
00:05:13,960 --> 00:05:21,800
It says that the law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of

56
00:05:21,800 --> 00:05:24,200
silver and gold.

57
00:05:24,200 --> 00:05:25,880
Can you say that?

58
00:05:25,880 --> 00:05:32,200
Can you say the Lord's word is more precious to you than thousands of pieces of silver

59
00:05:32,200 --> 00:05:33,880
and gold?

60
00:05:33,880 --> 00:05:39,640
This is a wonderful love and reverence for the word of God and we could really benefit

61
00:05:39,640 --> 00:05:47,600
greatly from taking this on in our hearts and in our Christian walk.

62
00:05:47,600 --> 00:05:52,400
So now we read another Psalm this week, Psalm 113.

63
00:05:52,400 --> 00:06:00,120
And so I want to talk about a series of Psalms that starts with 113.

64
00:06:00,120 --> 00:06:05,560
We didn't read all of them in the series this week, but I want to highlight this because

65
00:06:05,560 --> 00:06:13,680
it's called the Hallel and it Psalms 113 through 118.

66
00:06:13,680 --> 00:06:19,360
You know, Hallel in Hebrew means praise.

67
00:06:19,360 --> 00:06:26,880
So hallelujah means to praise the Lord, yah being short for the name of God.

68
00:06:26,880 --> 00:06:33,700
So hallelujah is to praise the Lord and hallel is to praise.

69
00:06:33,700 --> 00:06:42,280
And so we find that several of these Psalms end with the phrase hallelujah.

70
00:06:42,280 --> 00:06:48,640
And you may not pick it up because in English they've translated it into praise the Lord.

71
00:06:48,640 --> 00:07:03,600
So at the end of Psalm 113, 115, 116, 17, all end with hallelujah.

72
00:07:03,600 --> 00:07:11,600
And so this series of Psalms known as the Hallel were sung at the three great feasts

73
00:07:11,600 --> 00:07:20,760
of Israel, Passover, Shavuot and during, and Passover, the Feast of Tabernacles.

74
00:07:20,760 --> 00:07:26,600
But they were also sang during the Passover Seder.

75
00:07:26,600 --> 00:07:34,080
And for this reason, I want to bring it up because we, when we read in the New Testament

76
00:07:34,080 --> 00:07:41,160
about that last supper that Jesus had with his disciples, we'll talk about it of course

77
00:07:41,160 --> 00:07:47,840
much more detail when we get to the New Testament, but we all know that it was a Passover meal

78
00:07:47,840 --> 00:07:50,520
that Jesus had with his disciples.

79
00:07:50,520 --> 00:07:52,560
That's the last supper.

80
00:07:52,560 --> 00:08:02,640
And it says after they finished the meal that they sang a hymn or hymns and then they departed

81
00:08:02,640 --> 00:08:05,040
and they left for the Mount of Olives.

82
00:08:05,040 --> 00:08:14,320
Well that's because it was a part of the Passover Seder meal to sing the hallel, the hymns, at

83
00:08:14,320 --> 00:08:15,320
the end.

84
00:08:15,320 --> 00:08:18,880
And so that this is what Jesus sang.

85
00:08:18,880 --> 00:08:24,400
And we know that he probably sang it many times in his life at different occasions because

86
00:08:24,400 --> 00:08:26,520
it was so common.

87
00:08:26,520 --> 00:08:34,200
So I want to read to you a few verses from the hallel.

88
00:08:34,200 --> 00:08:35,880
And I want you to get in the mood here.

89
00:08:35,880 --> 00:08:41,040
These are Psalms of Praise sung during the great feast.

90
00:08:41,040 --> 00:08:47,840
So praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord.

91
00:08:47,840 --> 00:08:52,960
May it be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

92
00:08:52,960 --> 00:08:59,480
From the rising of the sun to its going down, the Lord's name is to be praised.

93
00:08:59,480 --> 00:09:05,720
The Lord is high above all nations, His glory above the heavens.

94
00:09:05,720 --> 00:09:14,080
Who is like the Lord our God who dwells on high, who humbles himself to behold the things

95
00:09:14,080 --> 00:09:15,920
that are in the heavens and the earth?

96
00:09:15,920 --> 00:09:17,560
Did you get that?

97
00:09:17,560 --> 00:09:23,960
God actually humbles himself to see what's in the heavens and the earth so far above

98
00:09:23,960 --> 00:09:25,360
that.

99
00:09:25,360 --> 00:09:31,640
He raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy out of the ash heap that he may

100
00:09:31,640 --> 00:09:37,000
seed him with the princes of his people.

101
00:09:37,000 --> 00:09:43,200
He grants the barren woman a home like a joyful mother of children.

102
00:09:43,200 --> 00:09:44,200
Praise the Lord.

103
00:09:44,200 --> 00:09:47,640
Hallelujah, Psalm 114.

104
00:09:47,640 --> 00:09:54,920
This goes over, of course, how God set the Israelites free from slavery in Egypt.

105
00:09:54,920 --> 00:09:56,760
It's a part of everything.

106
00:09:56,760 --> 00:09:58,120
It's in their DNA.

107
00:09:58,120 --> 00:10:03,960
It's the big act of God in their history that they're always repeating.

108
00:10:03,960 --> 00:10:11,320
When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah

109
00:10:11,320 --> 00:10:16,160
became his sanctuary and Israel his dominion.

110
00:10:16,160 --> 00:10:18,240
The sea saw it and fled.

111
00:10:18,240 --> 00:10:20,240
The Jordan turned back.

112
00:10:20,240 --> 00:10:26,360
The mountains skipped like rams and the little hills like lambs.

113
00:10:26,360 --> 00:10:28,800
What ails you, O sea, that you fled?

114
00:10:28,800 --> 00:10:31,120
O Jordan, that you turned back.

115
00:10:31,120 --> 00:10:34,200
O mountains, that you skipped like rams.

116
00:10:34,200 --> 00:10:37,280
O little hills like lambs.

117
00:10:37,280 --> 00:10:43,840
Terrible, tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of

118
00:10:43,840 --> 00:10:54,760
Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

119
00:10:54,760 --> 00:11:03,160
Psalm 115 then talks about the problems with idolatry.

120
00:11:03,160 --> 00:11:05,480
And I'm going to skip down to verse 9.

121
00:11:05,480 --> 00:11:07,920
O Israel, trust in the Lord.

122
00:11:07,920 --> 00:11:09,800
He is the help.

123
00:11:09,800 --> 00:11:12,200
He is their help and their shield.

124
00:11:12,200 --> 00:11:15,360
O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord.

125
00:11:15,360 --> 00:11:17,840
He is their help and their shield.

126
00:11:17,840 --> 00:11:20,880
See the parallelism, the poetry here.

127
00:11:20,880 --> 00:11:22,920
It's a song.

128
00:11:22,920 --> 00:11:26,160
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord.

129
00:11:26,160 --> 00:11:29,480
He is their help and their shield.

130
00:11:29,480 --> 00:11:32,440
The Lord has been mindful of us.

131
00:11:32,440 --> 00:11:34,280
He will bless us.

132
00:11:34,280 --> 00:11:36,680
He will bless the house of Israel.

133
00:11:36,680 --> 00:11:39,240
He will bless the house of Aaron.

134
00:11:39,240 --> 00:11:44,480
He will bless those who fear the Lord, both small and great.

135
00:11:44,480 --> 00:11:50,200
May the Lord give you increase more and more, you and your children.

136
00:11:50,200 --> 00:11:55,000
May you be blessed by the Lord who made heaven and earth.

137
00:11:55,000 --> 00:12:02,200
Even the heavens are the Lord's, but the earth He has given to the children of men.

138
00:12:02,200 --> 00:12:08,840
The dead do not praise the Lord nor any who go down into silence, but we will bless the

139
00:12:08,840 --> 00:12:14,120
Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

140
00:12:14,120 --> 00:12:17,840
Praise the Lord, or hallelujah.

141
00:12:17,840 --> 00:12:26,360
Psalm 115, I love the Lord because He's heard my voice and my supplications, because He's

142
00:12:26,360 --> 00:12:29,000
inclined His ear to me.

143
00:12:29,000 --> 00:12:34,680
Therefore, I will call upon Him as long as I live.

144
00:12:34,680 --> 00:12:41,360
Verse 12, What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits towards me?

145
00:12:41,360 --> 00:12:46,240
I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.

146
00:12:46,240 --> 00:12:49,560
I will pay my vows to the Lord.

147
00:12:49,560 --> 00:12:55,800
Now in the presence of all His people, precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His

148
00:12:55,800 --> 00:12:56,800
saints.

149
00:12:56,800 --> 00:13:00,640
O Lord, truly I am your servant.

150
00:13:00,640 --> 00:13:04,320
I am your servant, the Son of your maid servant.

151
00:13:04,320 --> 00:13:06,920
You have loosed my bonds.

152
00:13:06,920 --> 00:13:14,000
I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call upon the name of the Lord.

153
00:13:14,000 --> 00:13:17,040
I will pay my vows to the Lord.

154
00:13:17,040 --> 00:13:23,520
Now in the presence of all His people, in the court of the Lord's house, in the midst

155
00:13:23,520 --> 00:13:29,880
of you, O Jerusalem, praise the Lord, hallelujah.

156
00:13:29,880 --> 00:13:34,880
Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, that's you and me.

157
00:13:34,880 --> 00:13:42,120
Laud Him all you peoples, for His merciful kindness is great towards us, and the truth

158
00:13:42,120 --> 00:13:44,560
of the Lord endures forever.

159
00:13:44,560 --> 00:13:45,560
Hallelujah.

160
00:13:45,560 --> 00:13:53,720
Now this brings us to the last Psalm, Psalm 118, and I'm going to skip through some

161
00:13:53,720 --> 00:13:59,120
of it, I'm reading a few verses, and I want to talk about this.

162
00:13:59,120 --> 00:14:06,240
O give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His mercy endures forever.

163
00:14:06,240 --> 00:14:10,680
Let Israel now say, His mercy endures forever.

164
00:14:10,680 --> 00:14:15,680
Let the house of Aaron now say, His mercy endures forever.

165
00:14:15,680 --> 00:14:21,160
Let those who fear the Lord now say, His mercy endures forever.

166
00:14:21,160 --> 00:14:24,920
I called on the Lord in distress.

167
00:14:24,920 --> 00:14:29,600
The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.

168
00:14:29,600 --> 00:14:33,560
The Lord is on my side, I will not fear.

169
00:14:33,560 --> 00:14:37,240
What can man do to me?

170
00:14:37,240 --> 00:14:45,560
And going down to verse 14, the Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.

171
00:14:45,560 --> 00:14:50,680
The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous.

172
00:14:50,680 --> 00:14:53,160
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.

173
00:14:53,160 --> 00:14:55,960
The right hand of the Lord is exalted.

174
00:14:55,960 --> 00:15:01,280
I shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

175
00:15:01,280 --> 00:15:07,080
The Lord has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death.

176
00:15:07,080 --> 00:15:13,960
Open to me the gates of righteousness, and I will go through them, and I will praise the Lord.

177
00:15:13,960 --> 00:15:18,040
This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous shall enter.

178
00:15:18,040 --> 00:15:24,440
I will praise you, for you have answered me and have become my salvation.

179
00:15:24,440 --> 00:15:31,200
And then we enter into a part of this Psalm which is very prophetic and messianic.

180
00:15:31,200 --> 00:15:38,480
Verse 22, the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

181
00:15:38,480 --> 00:15:40,920
This is the Lord's doing.

182
00:15:40,920 --> 00:15:43,880
It is marvelous in our eyes.

183
00:15:43,880 --> 00:15:47,240
This is the day that the Lord has made.

184
00:15:47,240 --> 00:15:50,720
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

185
00:15:50,720 --> 00:15:53,440
Save now I pray, O Lord.

186
00:15:53,440 --> 00:15:57,120
O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.

187
00:15:57,120 --> 00:16:02,440
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

188
00:16:02,440 --> 00:16:06,960
We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.

189
00:16:06,960 --> 00:16:12,640
I want to stop here for a minute and make a few comments about this part of the Psalm.

190
00:16:12,640 --> 00:16:15,080
Remember now, this is Psalm 118.

191
00:16:15,080 --> 00:16:16,840
It's a part of the halal.

192
00:16:16,840 --> 00:16:24,040
It is sung all the time by the Jewish people at each of their feasts, at the Passover Seder.

193
00:16:24,040 --> 00:16:27,080
It is sung at different times.

194
00:16:27,080 --> 00:16:30,960
They're very, very familiar with these verses.

195
00:16:30,960 --> 00:16:39,920
And here is a very, very important concept that I want to make sure that we don't skim

196
00:16:39,920 --> 00:16:42,680
over and we take a minute.

197
00:16:42,680 --> 00:16:49,880
This verse here, the stone which the builders rejected has now become the chief cornerstone.

198
00:16:49,880 --> 00:16:57,200
It is later quoted in the New Testament and of course this refers to the rejection of

199
00:16:57,200 --> 00:17:01,680
the Jewish leaders of Jesus, the chief cornerstone.

200
00:17:01,680 --> 00:17:06,040
And it says, this was the Lord's doing.

201
00:17:06,040 --> 00:17:09,480
It is marvelous in our eyes.

202
00:17:09,480 --> 00:17:12,680
This is the day that the Lord has made.

203
00:17:12,680 --> 00:17:15,240
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

204
00:17:15,240 --> 00:17:18,920
You know, this is a very, very popular little tune.

205
00:17:18,920 --> 00:17:22,120
You teach it to the children at Bible school.

206
00:17:22,120 --> 00:17:27,680
We sing it, this is the day, this is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made.

207
00:17:27,680 --> 00:17:28,680
We will rejoice.

208
00:17:28,680 --> 00:17:33,240
You know, it's like, even though it's raining today and I don't really want to go outside,

209
00:17:33,240 --> 00:17:35,560
this is the day that the Lord has made.

210
00:17:35,560 --> 00:17:37,440
I'll rejoice and be glad in it.

211
00:17:37,440 --> 00:17:43,280
And we sort of use it as kind of a pep song to, you know, pep us up for the day, whatever

212
00:17:43,280 --> 00:17:44,560
we may encounter.

213
00:17:44,560 --> 00:17:51,560
But I want us to look at the original context of this verse.

214
00:17:51,560 --> 00:17:58,960
And the context is, the day that it's talking about is the day that the builders rejected

215
00:17:58,960 --> 00:18:01,080
the chief cornerstone.

216
00:18:01,080 --> 00:18:06,600
And you know, throughout Christian history, we have had very, very poor relations with

217
00:18:06,600 --> 00:18:07,720
the Jewish people.

218
00:18:07,720 --> 00:18:15,440
And thankfully that has changed a lot just in the last 30, 40, 50 years, mainly because

219
00:18:15,440 --> 00:18:20,080
of the birth of the state of Israel and the interaction of Jews and Christians.

220
00:18:20,080 --> 00:18:23,240
And there's many reasons for this.

221
00:18:23,240 --> 00:18:30,760
But for centuries, the Christian world looked upon the Jewish people with disdain.

222
00:18:30,760 --> 00:18:36,960
And the church actually taught a doctrine of what's called contempt of the Jews.

223
00:18:36,960 --> 00:18:43,360
And it was this, that because the Jews had rejected Jesus as the chief cornerstone, they

224
00:18:43,360 --> 00:18:45,720
had been rejected by God.

225
00:18:45,720 --> 00:18:48,360
And they were cursed for it.

226
00:18:48,360 --> 00:18:56,680
And they, therefore, anything that we did to persecute them, to discriminate them, to

227
00:18:56,680 --> 00:19:00,400
punish them for this, we were doing God a favor.

228
00:19:00,400 --> 00:19:03,200
And that's the teaching of contempt.

229
00:19:03,200 --> 00:19:08,160
That was a part of church doctrine and church theology.

230
00:19:08,160 --> 00:19:13,320
And people like our organization, the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, have worked now

231
00:19:13,320 --> 00:19:17,760
for 40 years correcting this.

232
00:19:17,760 --> 00:19:26,800
And this verse here is very key to correcting that, to say that the day the builders rejected

233
00:19:26,800 --> 00:19:33,320
the chief cornerstone was the Lord's doing and it's marvelous day.

234
00:19:33,320 --> 00:19:39,840
It's a day we should rejoice in because it's the day of our salvation.

235
00:19:39,840 --> 00:19:42,200
This is the day that the Lord has made.

236
00:19:42,200 --> 00:19:47,640
I will rejoice and be glad in it.

237
00:19:47,640 --> 00:19:56,080
And then this song goes on and it says, save now I pray, oh Lord, well, save now I pray,

238
00:19:56,080 --> 00:19:59,640
oh Lord, in Hebrew is Hoshie'enu.

239
00:19:59,640 --> 00:20:05,960
And that has been contracted in our English Bibles as Hosanna.

240
00:20:05,960 --> 00:20:13,400
So when the crowds picked up the olive branches and were saying Hosanna, Hosanna to Jesus

241
00:20:13,400 --> 00:20:19,800
as he entered Jerusalem on that triumphant entry, as we call it on Palm Sunday, they

242
00:20:19,800 --> 00:20:24,120
were quoting these verses.

243
00:20:24,120 --> 00:20:31,440
They were saying, oh Lord, our King, save us now, send prosperity, send good things,

244
00:20:31,440 --> 00:20:35,600
because that's what a king did for their subjects.

245
00:20:35,600 --> 00:20:40,200
Hoshie'enu was a cry of the people to a king.

246
00:20:40,200 --> 00:20:44,400
So they were proclaiming Jesus as that king.

247
00:20:44,400 --> 00:20:53,760
And they were saying, Baruch Habab, the Shem Adonai, blessed is he who comes in the name

248
00:20:53,760 --> 00:20:55,680
of the Lord.

249
00:20:55,680 --> 00:21:04,160
So later in that day when Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives and he looked out over Jerusalem,

250
00:21:04,160 --> 00:21:07,440
it says, he wept.

251
00:21:07,440 --> 00:21:16,120
And it also says that Jesus said to Jerusalem, you will not see me again until you say, Baruch

252
00:21:16,120 --> 00:21:23,680
Habab, the Shem Adonai, he quoting here, blessed is he who comes in the name of the

253
00:21:23,680 --> 00:21:24,680
Lord.

254
00:21:24,680 --> 00:21:31,320
So he wasn't just saying that you're going to welcome me because Baruch Habab means welcome.

255
00:21:31,320 --> 00:21:35,720
And today in Israel, if you go to somebody's house, they're going to open the door, they're

256
00:21:35,720 --> 00:21:42,680
going to say Baruch Habab, if you're one person, if you're several people, they'll say, Bruchim

257
00:21:42,680 --> 00:21:44,800
Habayim, they'll do it in plural.

258
00:21:44,800 --> 00:21:48,840
But here it's Baruch Habab is welcome.

259
00:21:48,840 --> 00:21:52,360
But Jesus didn't just mean you're going to welcome me.

260
00:21:52,360 --> 00:21:55,000
They all knew this verse.

261
00:21:55,000 --> 00:21:58,280
You're going to welcome me as king.

262
00:21:58,280 --> 00:22:06,000
And you're going to say Hoshienu, Hoshienu, Baruch Habab, the Shem Adonai, blessed is

263
00:22:06,000 --> 00:22:10,120
he who comes in the name of the Lord.

264
00:22:10,120 --> 00:22:16,120
So this is a very, very key, Missianic song.

265
00:22:16,120 --> 00:22:22,040
And because it's a part of the hallel and because it was sung there that last night

266
00:22:22,040 --> 00:22:27,880
that Passover Seder, and because it's referred to so many times in that last week when Jesus

267
00:22:27,880 --> 00:22:31,560
is in Jerusalem, I wanted to talk about it now.

268
00:22:31,560 --> 00:22:36,000
The Psalm wasn't actually written until a little bit later.

269
00:22:36,000 --> 00:22:39,520
So you'll find it in your daily Bible much later.

270
00:22:39,520 --> 00:22:42,920
You're not going to read it this week or next week.

271
00:22:42,920 --> 00:22:47,920
So I wanted to go ahead and cover it this week.

272
00:22:47,920 --> 00:22:54,280
Now another Psalm that we read last week, but I didn't take time to talk about, is

273
00:22:54,280 --> 00:22:57,120
Psalm 83.

274
00:22:57,120 --> 00:23:04,040
And when we talk about the church's relation with the Jewish people, it's part of a long

275
00:23:04,040 --> 00:23:09,560
history of what we call the history of the longest hatred.

276
00:23:09,560 --> 00:23:12,240
It's the history of anti-Semitism.

277
00:23:12,240 --> 00:23:18,120
It started before the church, we read about it in the pagan empires and in the book of

278
00:23:18,120 --> 00:23:19,200
Esther.

279
00:23:19,200 --> 00:23:26,520
But it was the Christian church that really took that and perpetrated it for centuries.

280
00:23:26,520 --> 00:23:34,120
And after the Christian era, then there were the Nazis and anti-Semitism just keeps going

281
00:23:34,120 --> 00:23:38,560
on and on under different faces, not just Christian.

282
00:23:38,560 --> 00:23:42,200
The Nazis were not Christian for sure.

283
00:23:42,200 --> 00:23:44,720
Today we have political anti-Semitism.

284
00:23:44,720 --> 00:23:47,280
We have Muslim anti-Semitism.

285
00:23:47,280 --> 00:23:52,280
So there's different faces to the anti-Semitism.

286
00:23:52,280 --> 00:24:00,120
But because it has gone on for as long as the Jewish people have been around, this hatred

287
00:24:00,120 --> 00:24:02,280
for the Jewish people.

288
00:24:02,280 --> 00:24:04,720
And sometimes we wonder, well, why is that?

289
00:24:04,720 --> 00:24:09,400
And why did the Christian church even fall into this?

290
00:24:09,400 --> 00:24:12,840
Because it's such an evil influence.

291
00:24:12,840 --> 00:24:18,280
And that's why there's no explanation for this history of anti-Semitism other than

292
00:24:18,280 --> 00:24:21,840
a spiritual one or what I'd call a biblical one.

293
00:24:21,840 --> 00:24:28,840
And it is because of the calling on the Jewish people that has placed them right in the middle

294
00:24:28,840 --> 00:24:35,120
of a spiritual battle between the forces of hell and God himself.

295
00:24:35,120 --> 00:24:42,360
And we read about that in Psalm 83, in the first four verses of Psalm 83.

296
00:24:42,360 --> 00:24:48,800
I often refer to because I think they kind of sum it up and they explain this.

297
00:24:48,800 --> 00:24:52,400
And some of those first four verses, I'll sum it up this way.

298
00:24:52,400 --> 00:25:05,080
It says, Oh God, those who hate you have declared, let us cut them off as a nation before us.

299
00:25:05,080 --> 00:25:09,800
That the name of Israel would be remembered no more.

300
00:25:09,800 --> 00:25:14,240
So it's a battle between the enemy and God himself.

301
00:25:14,240 --> 00:25:15,720
It's God's enemies.

302
00:25:15,720 --> 00:25:24,240
Oh God, those who hate you have said, let us cut Israel off as a nation that the name

303
00:25:24,240 --> 00:25:27,440
would never even be remembered again.

304
00:25:27,440 --> 00:25:34,680
And that sums up the spiritual battle of hatred, of animosity, what we call anti-Semitism,

305
00:25:34,680 --> 00:25:36,120
towards the Jewish people.

306
00:25:36,120 --> 00:25:41,560
And there's always this sinister plot in the background to wipe them off the face of the

307
00:25:41,560 --> 00:25:47,480
earth that they would be remembered no more because God chose those people.

308
00:25:47,480 --> 00:25:51,160
And he gave them a calling and a role to play.

309
00:25:51,160 --> 00:25:54,480
And they are still fulfilling that call today.

310
00:25:54,480 --> 00:26:00,760
And therefore they are a target, just as is the Church of Jesus Christ.

311
00:26:00,760 --> 00:26:06,720
We also are a target, and we'll talk more about this when we get to the New Testament

312
00:26:06,720 --> 00:26:10,280
and particularly to a very key scripture in the Book of Revelation.

313
00:26:10,280 --> 00:26:13,160
It's going to take us a few months to get there.

314
00:26:13,160 --> 00:26:21,240
But I did want to make these few remarks as we read Psalm 83 last week and we read the

315
00:26:21,240 --> 00:26:23,920
hallel this week.

316
00:26:23,920 --> 00:26:33,040
There's another Psalm called the Great Hallel, and that is Psalm 136.

317
00:26:33,040 --> 00:26:36,640
And it's a great Psalm of praise to the Lord.

318
00:26:36,640 --> 00:26:47,280
And it's also sung during the festivals and it's sung every morning service on Shabbat.

319
00:26:47,280 --> 00:26:51,960
And the festivals during the Passover Seder, Psalm 136.

320
00:26:51,960 --> 00:26:56,320
So you might want to get that out this week and read through it.

321
00:26:56,320 --> 00:27:03,000
So I hope that this has been a blessing to you and that this helps the Psalms sort of

322
00:27:03,000 --> 00:27:06,400
come alive to you in a new way.

323
00:27:06,400 --> 00:27:11,400
They are a great hallel, a great hallelujah to the Lord.

324
00:27:11,400 --> 00:27:18,320
So I hope that you have a great week reading through these Psalms of joy and of praise

325
00:27:18,320 --> 00:27:22,600
and let them just minister to your heart and your spirit.

326
00:27:22,600 --> 00:27:27,800
Then we'll be back here again next week as we wrap up the reading of the Psalms with

327
00:27:27,800 --> 00:27:31,840
some really key ones, the Missianic Psalms.

328
00:27:31,840 --> 00:27:38,960
So I can't wait to see you back here next week and until then, God bless.

329
00:27:38,960 --> 00:27:42,880
