Out of Zion with Susan Michael

Nehemiah demonstrates great leadership as he brings a third group of exiles back to rebuild Jerusalem. He encounters much resistance but in the end the walls are rebuilt. Ezra leads the people in a renewal of their covenant with God and a joyous celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. However, it is not long before the people are once again in disobedience. So, the Old Testament ends with the reality of man’s frailty but with the reminder that one day God will send a messenger before Him and bring the people into a right relationship with Him resulting in the purity of worship He has longed for.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for November 8-14, covering Nehemiah; 1 Chronicles 1-9.

16
00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:30,000
Hey there and welcome back. This is week 41 of our Walk Through the Bible.

17
00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:35,000
And you know what that means? We are finishing the Old Testament today.

18
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:42,000
We only have 11 weeks left and we will go through the New Testament beginning next week.

19
00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:49,000
So this week, let's wrap up our story that we've been following through the Old Testament.

20
00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:55,000
We're reading this week in the Daily Bible, the dates of October the 8th through the 14th,

21
00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:00,000
or the pages 1296 to 1336.

22
00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:04,000
So you're doing a great job. Congratulations.

23
00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:09,000
Alright, let's do just a little review of what we talked about last week.

24
00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:11,000
In fact, over the last couple of weeks.

25
00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:16,000
So the exiles have begun to come back to Jerusalem.

26
00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:22,000
We've seen two waves so far and they have rebuilt the temple.

27
00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:30,000
The prophets Daniel and Zechariah have had really glorious visions of the future,

28
00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:38,000
while other prophets have been there to encourage the rebuilding of the temple and the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

29
00:02:38,000 --> 00:02:48,000
The story of the return so far we read in Ezra 1 through 6 about the first exiles that were allowed to return under King Cyrus.

30
00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:54,000
And they were led by Zerubbabel and they saw the temple rebuilt.

31
00:02:54,000 --> 00:03:02,000
The second return happened about 80 years later and this was a group led by Ezra.

32
00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:09,000
They had gotten permission from King Ardegserxes and he brought about 40,000 people back with him.

33
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:13,000
But Ezra was a Torah scribe.

34
00:03:13,000 --> 00:03:19,000
He was a descendant of the first high priest, sorry, the high priest of the first temple,

35
00:03:19,000 --> 00:03:28,000
the last high priest of the first temple, and he was a cousin of the high priest of the second temple, Joshua.

36
00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:39,000
But he had a love for the law and so he focused on bringing the law back to the people and bringing their obedience back to the law.

37
00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:47,000
Now this week we're going to read about the return of a third group of exiles with Nehemiah.

38
00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:52,000
This group is about 15 years after Ezra's group.

39
00:03:52,000 --> 00:04:00,000
Nehemiah is the cup bearer to the King of Persia, King Ardegserxes.

40
00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:07,000
And this means that Nehemiah, we think cup bearer, that sounds like he just worked in the kitchen, right?

41
00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:12,000
But no, it was a very high level position.

42
00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:32,000
And this means that Nehemiah was a very trustworthy servant of the King serving in the highest levels of the royal court because the cup bearer was responsible to make sure that nothing was given or fed to the King that could poison him.

43
00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:42,000
And so only someone that was of the highest trust could hold that position and that's Nehemiah's position.

44
00:04:42,000 --> 00:04:52,000
And so he becomes burdened. He hears exiles come back from Jerusalem and they're telling about how badly it's going and how hard it is.

45
00:04:52,000 --> 00:05:02,000
And Nehemiah is very burdened about this. So the King sees that he's very downtrodden and discouraged, asks him what's wrong.

46
00:05:02,000 --> 00:05:18,000
And so we have then the story of Nehemiah and how that he begins to negotiate with the King for the return, how he prepares for the return, what he takes with him for the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

47
00:05:18,000 --> 00:05:28,000
And so I want to say that the book of Nehemiah is a wonderful study in leadership. There are some really rich lessons and there's many lessons.

48
00:05:28,000 --> 00:05:33,000
And so we're not going to take the time today to go through that for self-application.

49
00:05:33,000 --> 00:05:39,000
I know that you've probably heard teachings on Nehemiah. There's been many done and books written.

50
00:05:39,000 --> 00:05:50,000
I just will say this, that in the first chapter of Nehemiah we see how that he goes to the Lord in intercessory prayer on behalf of his people.

51
00:05:50,000 --> 00:05:56,000
And then in chapter two, how that the door begins to open for him to speak to the King about it.

52
00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:08,000
And the first thing he does is he prays and then he begins to speak up and to negotiate with the King for what he wants, which is to return and to rebuild

53
00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:20,000
the city of Jerusalem. And so it's a wonderful lesson here in negotiation and then the gift of administrations that he had and how he planned,

54
00:06:20,000 --> 00:06:27,000
what he needed to take with him, how long it would take, the people, everything, the letters that he needed.

55
00:06:27,000 --> 00:06:36,000
He had it all worked out. The King said, fine. And so he makes his trek back to Jerusalem and then he goes out in the middle of the night all along

56
00:06:36,000 --> 00:06:44,000
and he surveys the city and he sees just how bad, the bad shape that it's in and what is needed.

57
00:06:44,000 --> 00:06:55,000
And so then in Nehemiah chapters three through seven, we have the story of the opposition to Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem.

58
00:06:55,000 --> 00:07:05,000
And once again, rich, rich lessons here for anyone in ministry or in leadership, how that here Nehemiah is called of God to go

59
00:07:05,000 --> 00:07:17,000
and do this and he gets there and all he gets are false accusations and complaints and slander and on and on and on.

60
00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:27,000
And he has to continue working in the midst of all of that. And boy, what a lesson it is for all of us how to handle criticism,

61
00:07:27,000 --> 00:07:39,000
how to handle opposition, how to handle discouragement, even slander because he had to handle it all and any of us in any kind of leadership,

62
00:07:39,000 --> 00:07:44,000
we have to be able to handle these things because it does happen.

63
00:07:44,000 --> 00:07:53,000
So, but sticking to our story then, by chapter eight in Nehemiah, the walls are rebuilt.

64
00:07:53,000 --> 00:07:59,000
And so Nehemiah begins to plan how to populate the city because the walls are built,

65
00:07:59,000 --> 00:08:05,000
but very few people actually live in Jerusalem because it's still rubble and they need houses built.

66
00:08:05,000 --> 00:08:14,000
And so he gets leaders to live in Jerusalem, set an example, began rebuilding the city and others will follow.

67
00:08:14,000 --> 00:08:24,000
By chapter eight, he then has Ezra come and read the law to the people as they dedicate the walls.

68
00:08:24,000 --> 00:08:31,000
And what's so special here is that as the people hear the law read, it says they wept.

69
00:08:31,000 --> 00:08:39,000
And then on the second day, they get to the reading of the law and they read about the Feast of Tabernacles.

70
00:08:39,000 --> 00:08:46,000
Now, they are in the seventh month, this is the month to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

71
00:08:46,000 --> 00:08:56,000
They read about it, so they run out, they start gathering the palm branches and the things that they need to build their booths.

72
00:08:56,000 --> 00:09:03,000
What we call sometimes in English tabernacles, but the Hebrew word means a booth, a sukkah.

73
00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:09,000
And so they build these booths and they live in them for the full week.

74
00:09:09,000 --> 00:09:16,000
As a every day they're hearing from the law and then they're celebrating and they're worshiping the Lord.

75
00:09:16,000 --> 00:09:19,000
Wow, what a wonderful Feast of Tabernacles.

76
00:09:19,000 --> 00:09:31,000
And the great thing is that the Feast of Tabernacles is the one Feast in the Bible where the people were commanded to rejoice for the whole week.

77
00:09:31,000 --> 00:09:34,000
So I just want you to picture this now.

78
00:09:34,000 --> 00:09:42,000
Jerusalem is in rebels, there's many of the homes are still destroyed, there's nothing there, very few people are living in the city.

79
00:09:42,000 --> 00:09:56,000
So they all go in and they build their booths, their sukkahs, and they're living under these temporary booths the whole week while they celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

80
00:09:56,000 --> 00:10:07,000
And the other thing that's neat about this story is that in the midst of such discouragement, in the midst of rubble, in the midst of this huge job they have to rebuild the city,

81
00:10:07,000 --> 00:10:12,000
they are commanded to rejoice and they have a whole week of rejoicing.

82
00:10:12,000 --> 00:10:17,000
It's a wonderful, wonderful story in the climax really for the book of Nehemiah.

83
00:10:17,000 --> 00:10:31,000
And it shows how that really the whole issue of rebuilding the temple and rebuilding Jerusalem, it's not about walls and stones, it's about the worship.

84
00:10:31,000 --> 00:10:34,000
And here we have it in chapter 8.

85
00:10:34,000 --> 00:10:42,000
In chapter 9 then, the people all make a covenant with the Lord to obey His laws, they even sign a document.

86
00:10:42,000 --> 00:10:47,000
And then Nehemiah returns to Persia for a bit.

87
00:10:47,000 --> 00:10:51,000
And then when he comes back to Jerusalem, what does he find?

88
00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:55,000
He's just appalled by the sin.

89
00:10:55,000 --> 00:10:58,000
The priests have misused parts of the temple.

90
00:10:58,000 --> 00:11:03,000
The people are not going about rebuilding and obeying the law.

91
00:11:03,000 --> 00:11:06,000
And he's just appalled by it all.

92
00:11:06,000 --> 00:11:15,000
So the book ends there at the end of chapter 13 with verse 31b.

93
00:11:15,000 --> 00:11:20,000
This is the last half of that verse, the very last line of the whole book of Nehemiah.

94
00:11:20,000 --> 00:11:26,000
And he says, Lord, remember me, oh my God, for good.

95
00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:35,000
In that whole last chapter he has reviewed, well, I did this and I did this and I did this and I, you know, I tried to do this.

96
00:11:35,000 --> 00:11:38,000
And the people were doing that and I did this.

97
00:11:38,000 --> 00:11:45,000
And at the end, he just ends with, oh Lord, please remember me for the good that I did.

98
00:11:45,000 --> 00:11:47,000
He tried his best, in other words.

99
00:11:47,000 --> 00:11:49,000
I don't know if you've ever felt that way.

100
00:11:49,000 --> 00:11:56,000
I certainly have, where I've said, God, I did my best.

101
00:11:56,000 --> 00:11:58,000
I just did my best.

102
00:11:58,000 --> 00:12:02,000
And that's how Nehemiah ends his book.

103
00:12:02,000 --> 00:12:10,000
So now I want to talk about the end here of our reading this week in the Old Testament.

104
00:12:10,000 --> 00:12:17,000
The ancient manuscripts of the Bible, what's known as the Masoretic text,

105
00:12:17,000 --> 00:12:22,000
have the Bible ending right here with this verse.

106
00:12:22,000 --> 00:12:25,000
Yes, it ended with the book of Ezra Nehemiah.

107
00:12:25,000 --> 00:12:31,000
And just a word here, the book of Ezra Nehemiah was just one book.

108
00:12:31,000 --> 00:12:36,000
Later it was divided and part of it was called Ezra and part of it is called Nehemiah.

109
00:12:36,000 --> 00:12:40,000
It's believed that Ezra probably compiled the whole thing,

110
00:12:40,000 --> 00:12:46,000
but he may have worked from Nehemiah's diaries for the part about Nehemiah.

111
00:12:46,000 --> 00:12:48,000
So today it's two books.

112
00:12:48,000 --> 00:12:56,000
And in the old manuscripts, this was the end of the Old Testament.

113
00:12:56,000 --> 00:13:00,000
Kind of a downer, kind of a down ending.

114
00:13:00,000 --> 00:13:08,000
Therefore, when the Hebrew Bible was codified for the Jewish world,

115
00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:13,000
they ended the Old Testament with the books of first and second chronicles.

116
00:13:13,000 --> 00:13:14,000
Why?

117
00:13:14,000 --> 00:13:23,000
Well, because the book of first and second chronicles is a wonderful review of the entire Old Testament.

118
00:13:23,000 --> 00:13:30,000
It begins with Adam and it ends with the return of the exiles under King Cyrus.

119
00:13:30,000 --> 00:13:36,000
So it ends with a little bit more of an upbeat and it is a really nice summary.

120
00:13:36,000 --> 00:13:45,000
And so I say that because if any of you were not able to read through the whole Old Testament with us,

121
00:13:45,000 --> 00:13:49,000
you just sort of been starting now or you've been following through.

122
00:13:49,000 --> 00:13:55,000
Read first and second chronicles. It kind of gives you a summation of the story.

123
00:13:55,000 --> 00:14:01,000
But second chronicles ends with almost a half sentence or a half thought.

124
00:14:01,000 --> 00:14:05,000
And it's where King Cyrus is saying of the Jews,

125
00:14:05,000 --> 00:14:11,000
May the Lord his God be with him and let him go up.

126
00:14:11,000 --> 00:14:13,000
That's how the book ends.

127
00:14:13,000 --> 00:14:19,000
So it's talking about King Cyrus allowing the Jews to go up to Jerusalem.

128
00:14:19,000 --> 00:14:27,000
And so it ends the Hebrew Bible with sort of this transition into the future where they are,

129
00:14:27,000 --> 00:14:29,000
they've been allowed to return.

130
00:14:29,000 --> 00:14:32,000
So who compiled the Old Testament?

131
00:14:32,000 --> 00:14:37,000
Well, it's believed that Ezra is the one that gathered the various books together

132
00:14:37,000 --> 00:14:41,000
and began compiling it into one.

133
00:14:41,000 --> 00:14:46,000
It's also believed Ezra may have written first and second chronicles.

134
00:14:46,000 --> 00:14:53,000
Rabbinic tradition says that he did and Rabbinic tradition also says that Ezra wrote Malachi

135
00:14:53,000 --> 00:15:00,000
because Malachi means Malachi or my messenger, my angel.

136
00:15:00,000 --> 00:15:04,000
And it's believed that Ezra may have written that book.

137
00:15:04,000 --> 00:15:10,000
So I'm very grateful for Ezra, for all of his work in chronicling the Bible,

138
00:15:10,000 --> 00:15:16,000
chronicling this amazing story of the return of the Jewish people

139
00:15:16,000 --> 00:15:20,000
and for his love for the law, his love for the Word of God,

140
00:15:20,000 --> 00:15:24,000
that he put all that effort into pulling it together.

141
00:15:24,000 --> 00:15:29,000
And we have so much to be grateful to Ezra for.

142
00:15:29,000 --> 00:15:34,000
Now, having said all of that, I will say that the Christian Bible has arranged the books

143
00:15:34,000 --> 00:15:36,000
in a little bit of a different order.

144
00:15:36,000 --> 00:15:42,000
And so our Bible, our Old Testament ends with the book of Malachi.

145
00:15:42,000 --> 00:15:52,000
And even though we talked about Malachi last week, it ends with this prophesying of the coming messenger.

146
00:15:52,000 --> 00:16:01,000
And so I just want to bring out a couple of jewels from Malachi as we close out the reading of the Old Testament this week.

147
00:16:01,000 --> 00:16:08,000
So in Malachi chapter one, verse 11, it's a wonderful verse here where he says,

148
00:16:08,000 --> 00:16:15,000
My name will be great among the nations from where the sun rises to where it sets.

149
00:16:15,000 --> 00:16:20,000
In every place, incense and pure offerings will be brought to me

150
00:16:20,000 --> 00:16:27,000
because my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord Almighty.

151
00:16:27,000 --> 00:16:37,000
So Malachi here is restating that vision of the future that the Lord is going to be king over all the nations.

152
00:16:37,000 --> 00:16:47,000
And anyone here, this pure worship of him will make his name great amongst the nations.

153
00:16:47,000 --> 00:16:51,000
And then in chapter three, he says here about the messenger,

154
00:16:51,000 --> 00:16:57,000
says, I will send my messenger who will prepare the way before me.

155
00:16:57,000 --> 00:17:02,000
Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple.

156
00:17:02,000 --> 00:17:09,000
The messenger of the covenant whom you desire will come, says the Lord Almighty.

157
00:17:09,000 --> 00:17:16,000
So the Christian theologians apply this,

158
00:17:16,000 --> 00:17:23,000
that the messenger, the forerunner will come before the Lord himself appears and will appear in the temple.

159
00:17:23,000 --> 00:17:31,000
And that is talking about John the Baptist as the forerunner before Jesus who did come and appear in the temple.

160
00:17:31,000 --> 00:17:36,000
Going on in verse two, but who can endure the day of his coming?

161
00:17:36,000 --> 00:17:43,000
Who can stand when he appears for he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap?

162
00:17:43,000 --> 00:17:47,000
He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.

163
00:17:47,000 --> 00:17:52,000
He will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.

164
00:17:52,000 --> 00:17:57,000
Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness.

165
00:17:57,000 --> 00:18:08,000
And the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord as in days gone by, as in former years.

166
00:18:08,000 --> 00:18:14,000
So the coming of the Messiah is going to bring a refining, a purifying,

167
00:18:14,000 --> 00:18:18,000
because it's all about bringing pure worship to the Lord.

168
00:18:18,000 --> 00:18:24,000
That is the aim of all of this, is to bring pure worship before the Lord.

169
00:18:24,000 --> 00:18:33,000
And then going on here he says in verse six, this is a verse many of us have read and underlined.

170
00:18:33,000 --> 00:18:41,000
It says, I the Lord do not change, so you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

171
00:18:41,000 --> 00:18:52,000
See, going on here now in chapter four verse five, before I go there, let me say that I the Lord do not change.

172
00:18:52,000 --> 00:18:55,000
He's talking about here his covenants.

173
00:18:55,000 --> 00:18:59,000
He doesn't come up with new agreements or new requirements.

174
00:18:59,000 --> 00:19:02,000
It's all what he set forward in the desert.

175
00:19:02,000 --> 00:19:08,000
It's all what he promised to David, which is now several hundred years before.

176
00:19:08,000 --> 00:19:10,000
All that still yay and amen with God.

177
00:19:10,000 --> 00:19:12,000
He doesn't change his mind.

178
00:19:12,000 --> 00:19:13,000
He doesn't change.

179
00:19:13,000 --> 00:19:19,000
Therefore he says, you descendants of Jacob are not destroyed.

180
00:19:19,000 --> 00:19:22,000
Now moving on to chapter four verse five.

181
00:19:22,000 --> 00:19:24,000
This is the end of the book.

182
00:19:24,000 --> 00:19:32,000
See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.

183
00:19:32,000 --> 00:19:38,000
He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the hearts of the children to their parents.

184
00:19:38,000 --> 00:19:43,000
Or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.

185
00:19:43,000 --> 00:19:52,000
So that is the verse that closes the Christian arrangement of the Old Testament.

186
00:19:52,000 --> 00:20:03,000
Once again, it's not a real happy beat, but it does say here that he is going to send Elijah the prophet before that dreadful day of the Lord comes.

187
00:20:03,000 --> 00:20:07,000
And he's going to restore relationship.

188
00:20:07,000 --> 00:20:14,000
And I want to close our time together today in our reading of the Old Testament with this thought.

189
00:20:14,000 --> 00:20:19,000
It's all about our relationship with God.

190
00:20:19,000 --> 00:20:25,000
Our relationship with God is reflected in the relationships around us.

191
00:20:25,000 --> 00:20:33,000
If we are walking in fellowship with the Lord and in obedience to His word, our relationships are set in order.

192
00:20:33,000 --> 00:20:37,000
How we honor our parents, how we train up our children.

193
00:20:37,000 --> 00:20:45,000
It's all set in order, but when we're walking in disobedience, then all these relationships fall apart.

194
00:20:45,000 --> 00:20:54,000
But the Lord wants is our right relationship with Him and then His people around us will be well cared for.

195
00:20:54,000 --> 00:21:02,000
So when this Old Testament ends, it's with this promise, He's going to send a messenger and prepare the way.

196
00:21:02,000 --> 00:21:10,000
And He's going to come and that messenger is going to restore our right relationship with Him.

197
00:21:10,000 --> 00:21:17,000
Therefore, when the Lord comes, we won't need the refining by fire as gold or silver,

198
00:21:17,000 --> 00:21:21,000
but we will have pure worship going up before the Lord.

199
00:21:21,000 --> 00:21:28,000
And His name will be vindicated, will be lifted up above all the nations.

200
00:21:28,000 --> 00:21:32,000
That's what our whole reading of the Old Testament has led us to.

201
00:21:32,000 --> 00:21:35,000
That's what it's all about.

202
00:21:35,000 --> 00:21:39,000
And that is the day that we are all looking forward to.

203
00:21:39,000 --> 00:21:46,000
Now, next week we will begin looking at the New Testament, but in the first few days next week,

204
00:21:46,000 --> 00:21:55,000
we're going to be reading out of the daily Bible a summation of 400 years of history that still is to take place

205
00:21:55,000 --> 00:22:02,000
between today and our Old Testament reading and where the New Testament begins.

206
00:22:02,000 --> 00:22:11,000
This is known as a 400 year period of silence, not because I think God was silent, because I actually don't think He was silent,

207
00:22:11,000 --> 00:22:15,000
but because we have no writing prophets during that time.

208
00:22:15,000 --> 00:22:21,000
Therefore, we don't have any books that have been canonized into the Bible to tell the story,

209
00:22:21,000 --> 00:22:29,000
but quite a story there was between the return of the exiles and the rebuilding of the land and the Second Temple.

210
00:22:29,000 --> 00:22:32,000
And when Jesus appears in the New Testament.

211
00:22:32,000 --> 00:22:35,000
So we're going to fill in that gap with you next week.

212
00:22:35,000 --> 00:22:44,000
And until then, I want to ask you, invite your friends to join us for the last quarter of our walk through the Bible,

213
00:22:44,000 --> 00:22:50,000
because over the next 11 weeks, we're going to be walking through the New Testament.

214
00:22:50,000 --> 00:22:53,000
And so we want you to encourage, bring your friends on.

215
00:22:53,000 --> 00:22:59,000
Maybe it got a little tedious going through the last few weeks of the Old Testament,

216
00:22:59,000 --> 00:23:03,000
but let's start again afresh with the New Testament.

217
00:23:03,000 --> 00:23:05,000
Invite your friends to join us.

218
00:23:05,000 --> 00:23:08,000
And I think it's going to be really exciting.

219
00:23:08,000 --> 00:23:12,000
So I look forward to seeing you back here next week.

220
00:23:12,000 --> 00:23:24,000
And until then, may the Lord bless the reading of the final words of the prophets here in the Hebrew Bible in the Old Testament.

221
00:23:24,000 --> 00:23:27,000
May you be blessed and I'll see you back here.

222
00:23:27,000 --> 00:23:32,000
Have you fallen behind in your walk through the Bible daily readings?

223
00:23:32,000 --> 00:23:35,000
