It Doesn't Get More Exciting Than This (Walk Thru the Bible Week 47)

Out of Zion with Susan Michael

Two of the most exciting portions of Scripture include the resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the early church. In-between those two events is a conversation between Jesus and the disciples that confirmed a future role for Israel. In the meantime, the church was to be born and empowered by the Holy Spirit to take the gospel of the kingdom to all the nations. And if that isn’t exciting enough, the timing of these events point to God’s design found in the ancient feasts of Israel.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for December 20-26, covering End of Gospels, Acts 1-2.

00:00:06,200 --> 00:00:07,700
book on the planet.

to life.

6
00:00:16,160 --> 00:00:20,200
Now, let's join our host, Susan Michael.

7
00:00:20,200 --> 00:00:24,520
Well, hey there.

8
00:00:24,520 --> 00:00:30,340
You know, if I had to pick what I think is the most exciting week of our entire year

9
00:00:30,340 --> 00:00:34,360
long walk through the Bible, it would be this week.

10
00:00:34,360 --> 00:00:41,600
We are going to be reading and discussing three of the most exciting portions of Scripture

11
00:00:41,600 --> 00:00:43,280
and a whole lot more.

12
00:00:43,280 --> 00:00:46,160
So first, welcome to everyone.

13
00:00:46,160 --> 00:00:51,440
This is week 47 of our year long walk through the Bible.

14
00:00:51,440 --> 00:00:58,880
This week we are reading in our daily Bible the dates of November 19 through 25 or the

15
00:00:58,880 --> 00:01:04,880
pages 1477 to 1512.

16
00:01:04,880 --> 00:01:10,620
So as we get started, let's first review what we talked about last week.

17
00:01:10,620 --> 00:01:15,120
We closed last week with the burial of Jesus.

18
00:01:15,120 --> 00:01:18,360
It looked like it was all over.

19
00:01:18,360 --> 00:01:25,280
The one who had been called King of the Jews was laid into a tomb and it was all over.

20
00:01:25,280 --> 00:01:30,680
His disciples didn't know what to do or what to think.

21
00:01:30,680 --> 00:01:38,960
And then our first most exciting event this week, of course, is the resurrection of Jesus.

22
00:01:38,960 --> 00:01:42,640
And he then appeared on the earth for 40 days.

23
00:01:42,640 --> 00:01:49,560
Now I just want to point out here that Jesus didn't appear on earth as a ghost or as a

24
00:01:49,560 --> 00:01:54,720
spirit, but he was a resurrected physical body.

25
00:01:54,720 --> 00:02:01,000
It's something that we've never seen or touched or we don't understand.

26
00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:03,880
It's a resurrected body.

27
00:02:03,880 --> 00:02:05,360
He ate.

28
00:02:05,360 --> 00:02:11,320
He allowed them to touch him and to touch his wounds, to see his wounds.

29
00:02:11,320 --> 00:02:18,480
So it was truly a manifestation that mankind really had not seen before.

30
00:02:18,480 --> 00:02:24,920
And I just want to say that as we are going to all be resurrected and have resurrected

31
00:02:24,920 --> 00:02:31,520
bodies, in heaven it says that we are there from every top tribe and every tongue worshipping

32
00:02:31,520 --> 00:02:32,760
before the Lord.

33
00:02:32,760 --> 00:02:42,160
So that means that even in our resurrected bodies we will retain who we are, our ethnicity,

34
00:02:42,160 --> 00:02:47,560
which tribe we came from, which people group, which language group.

35
00:02:47,560 --> 00:02:54,520
And that means that Jesus' resurrected body also retained his ethnicity.

36
00:02:54,520 --> 00:03:02,360
He had been born a Jew and as a resurrected, his resurrected body was still the Jewish

37
00:03:02,360 --> 00:03:07,880
Savior who had died on the cross and had the wounds to prove it.

38
00:03:07,880 --> 00:03:14,840
Now during the 40 days that Jesus was on earth, he told his disciples what their commission

39
00:03:14,840 --> 00:03:21,360
was to do, what their next steps were, what their commission was, what we call the Great

40
00:03:21,360 --> 00:03:22,600
Commission.

41
00:03:22,600 --> 00:03:28,440
And I loved it in the Daily Bible because in the Daily Bible the Great Commission in

42
00:03:28,440 --> 00:03:31,680
all three Gospels was put right there together.

43
00:03:31,680 --> 00:03:38,360
So you could read the Great Commission in Matthew which said, go and make disciples and teach

44
00:03:38,360 --> 00:03:40,720
them to obey.

45
00:03:40,720 --> 00:03:46,640
And the Great Commission, according to Mark, was to go of course and preach and whoever

46
00:03:46,640 --> 00:03:49,080
believes will be baptized.

47
00:03:49,080 --> 00:03:54,000
And he went on to describe, these signs will accompany those who believe.

48
00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:59,760
They'll drive out demons, they'll speak in new tongues, they'll pick up snakes, not

49
00:03:59,760 --> 00:04:06,280
be hurt by deadly poison, they'll lay hands on the sick and they will be healed.

50
00:04:06,280 --> 00:04:14,480
So Mark went farther than Matthew and described what these disciples should expect to encounter

51
00:04:14,480 --> 00:04:17,360
when they go forth in the Great Commission.

52
00:04:17,360 --> 00:04:24,240
And then Luke, his emphasis in the Great Commission was that it would be repentance for forgiveness

53
00:04:24,240 --> 00:04:31,800
of sins, that they were to preach repentance and to be forgiven for their sins.

54
00:04:31,800 --> 00:04:38,040
So it's interesting, now there's one other verse that we read actually earlier on and

55
00:04:38,040 --> 00:04:41,240
that was in Matthew 24, verse 14.

56
00:04:41,240 --> 00:04:46,600
And it's actually my favorite when it comes to describing the Great Commission.

57
00:04:46,600 --> 00:04:49,200
And this is what it says.

58
00:04:49,200 --> 00:04:57,120
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations

59
00:04:57,120 --> 00:04:59,880
and then the end will come.

60
00:04:59,880 --> 00:05:07,480
So I want to point out here that what they're being told to preach is the gospel of the kingdom.

61
00:05:07,480 --> 00:05:09,480
What is the gospel of the kingdom?

62
00:05:09,480 --> 00:05:12,240
Well, it's the good news.

63
00:05:12,240 --> 00:05:21,560
Gospel means the good news, that's the translation of in Vigelion, I think is how you pronounce

64
00:05:21,560 --> 00:05:22,560
it.

65
00:05:22,560 --> 00:05:24,600
It means the good news.

66
00:05:24,600 --> 00:05:27,240
So it's the good news of the kingdom.

67
00:05:27,240 --> 00:05:28,240
What kingdom?

68
00:05:28,240 --> 00:05:29,240
Well, the kingdom of God.

69
00:05:29,240 --> 00:05:33,720
And as Jesus went forward, he preached the kingdom is at hand.

70
00:05:33,720 --> 00:05:41,200
And so the good news of the kingdom is that the kingdom is at hand and that we can enter

71
00:05:41,200 --> 00:05:43,440
into that kingdom now.

72
00:05:43,440 --> 00:05:46,240
But also it is a coming kingdom.

73
00:05:46,240 --> 00:05:50,880
Get ready, as Luke said, repent, be baptized for your sins.

74
00:05:50,880 --> 00:05:52,880
The kingdom is coming.

75
00:05:52,880 --> 00:05:54,400
That's the good news.

76
00:05:54,400 --> 00:06:01,040
And then it says that this gospel will be preached to all the nations and then the end

77
00:06:01,040 --> 00:06:02,040
will come.

78
00:06:02,040 --> 00:06:07,000
So I'm going to come back to this a little bit later.

79
00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:13,720
So Jesus is spending 40 days on the earth, he gives the disciples their directions, the

80
00:06:13,720 --> 00:06:17,080
great commission, what they are supposed to do.

81
00:06:17,080 --> 00:06:23,960
I want to point out that to the gospel of John also makes a very special point to let

82
00:06:23,960 --> 00:06:30,920
you know that Jesus had performed many other signs that were not recorded in the book of

83
00:06:30,920 --> 00:06:33,560
John or in any of the gospels.

84
00:06:33,560 --> 00:06:41,040
And John 20, he says, but these were written that you may believe that Jesus is Messiah,

85
00:06:41,040 --> 00:06:47,200
the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

86
00:06:47,200 --> 00:06:52,520
So John is saying not everything is written in this book, but I picked what you need to

87
00:06:52,520 --> 00:07:02,680
know to believe who Jesus was and is and how that you may believe and receive eternal life.

88
00:07:02,680 --> 00:07:08,960
And in the next chapter, John 21, he said, Jesus did many other things.

89
00:07:08,960 --> 00:07:14,840
If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not

90
00:07:14,840 --> 00:07:18,720
have room for the books that would be written.

91
00:07:18,720 --> 00:07:26,680
So John wanted to make sure you knew these stories are just the tip of the iceberg.

92
00:07:26,680 --> 00:07:29,920
Jesus did and said so much.

93
00:07:29,920 --> 00:07:35,360
I'm so thankful that we have recorded what we do have recorded in the gospels.

94
00:07:35,360 --> 00:07:40,320
But it does make me curious to know what are all the other stories?

95
00:07:40,320 --> 00:07:42,800
Who are all the other people that he touched?

96
00:07:42,800 --> 00:07:47,760
What else did he do and say while he was here?

97
00:07:47,760 --> 00:07:54,160
And this brings us to our second most exciting event, I think, in the Bible.

98
00:07:54,160 --> 00:07:57,960
And we read it in Acts chapter one and two.

99
00:07:57,960 --> 00:08:00,800
So Acts is written by Luke.

100
00:08:00,800 --> 00:08:07,520
It's actually to be a continuation of the Gospel of Luke, but it's where we begin now

101
00:08:07,520 --> 00:08:12,040
to talk about the Acts of the early church.

102
00:08:12,040 --> 00:08:20,480
And in the beginning of Acts, Luke says here that he says, starting in verse three, part

103
00:08:20,480 --> 00:08:29,760
three, he appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

104
00:08:29,760 --> 00:08:37,120
On one occasion while he was eating with them, he gave them this command, do not leave Jerusalem,

105
00:08:37,120 --> 00:08:42,840
but wait for the gift my father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

106
00:08:42,840 --> 00:08:50,440
For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

107
00:08:50,440 --> 00:08:58,200
So, Jesus spent 40 days with them teaching them about the kingdom of God, how I wish

108
00:08:58,200 --> 00:09:03,760
I could hear all of that teaching about the coming kingdom of God.

109
00:09:03,760 --> 00:09:09,720
But he tells them, wait in Jerusalem and you're going to be baptized with the power that you're

110
00:09:09,720 --> 00:09:13,440
going to need to carry out the commission.

111
00:09:13,440 --> 00:09:20,400
So then verse six, then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time

112
00:09:20,400 --> 00:09:24,600
going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

113
00:09:24,600 --> 00:09:30,480
And he says to them, it is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set

114
00:09:30,480 --> 00:09:36,800
by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and

115
00:09:36,800 --> 00:09:43,920
you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of

116
00:09:43,920 --> 00:09:45,680
the earth.

117
00:09:45,680 --> 00:09:48,120
Let's back up.

118
00:09:48,120 --> 00:09:56,000
After Jesus has been teaching the disciples for 40 days about the kingdom, what is the

119
00:09:56,000 --> 00:09:59,520
burning question on their mind?

120
00:09:59,520 --> 00:10:04,000
Are you now going to establish the kingdom?

121
00:10:04,000 --> 00:10:11,160
Are you now going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

122
00:10:11,160 --> 00:10:19,880
So obviously Jesus' teaching about the kingdom included a restored kingdom of Israel.

123
00:10:19,880 --> 00:10:26,240
And you have to understand throughout the Old Testament, the kingdom of Israel under

124
00:10:26,240 --> 00:10:31,080
the Davidic kingdom was actually considered the kingdom of God.

125
00:10:31,080 --> 00:10:38,440
It was a kingdom under the Lordship of God and they went into sin and they lost it.

126
00:10:38,440 --> 00:10:46,560
But their understanding of the kingdom of Israel was that it was the kingdom of God

127
00:10:46,560 --> 00:10:51,400
on earth and they're saying, are you now going to restore the kingdom?

128
00:10:51,400 --> 00:10:53,160
And Jesus does not rebuke them.

129
00:10:53,160 --> 00:10:57,560
He doesn't correct them and he doesn't contradict them at all.

130
00:10:57,560 --> 00:11:02,200
He says, sorry, but it's not for you to know the time.

131
00:11:02,200 --> 00:11:09,960
Instead, you're going to receive the power of the Holy Spirit to go forth and carry out

132
00:11:09,960 --> 00:11:12,600
this commission.

133
00:11:12,600 --> 00:11:19,640
So then it says that after he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes and a

134
00:11:19,640 --> 00:11:22,240
cloud hid him from their sight.

135
00:11:22,240 --> 00:11:26,160
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going.

136
00:11:26,160 --> 00:11:30,080
When suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

137
00:11:30,080 --> 00:11:35,440
One of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky?

138
00:11:35,440 --> 00:11:42,760
This same Jesus who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way

139
00:11:42,760 --> 00:11:46,560
you have seen him go into heaven.

140
00:11:46,560 --> 00:11:51,840
So Jesus spent 40 days teaching about the kingdom.

141
00:11:51,840 --> 00:11:54,880
They asked, so are you now going to restore the kingdom?

142
00:11:54,880 --> 00:11:57,920
And he says, no, the time isn't now.

143
00:11:57,920 --> 00:12:03,720
The time is for you to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and be witnesses unto me throughout

144
00:12:03,720 --> 00:12:08,120
Jerusalem, Judea, and to the ends of the earth.

145
00:12:08,120 --> 00:12:15,080
And I just want to point out here that the disciples are saying, is it now time to restore

146
00:12:15,080 --> 00:12:16,360
the kingdom to Israel?

147
00:12:16,360 --> 00:12:20,280
Which is Israel's specific calling.

148
00:12:20,280 --> 00:12:25,640
Israel's calling is to be the mediator of God's redemptive plan for the earth.

149
00:12:25,640 --> 00:12:31,200
So through them he carried out the covenants and through them he's going to carry out

150
00:12:31,200 --> 00:12:35,120
the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth.

151
00:12:35,120 --> 00:12:36,960
That is Israel's calling.

152
00:12:36,960 --> 00:12:42,680
Now he tells them the timing isn't for you to know on that.

153
00:12:42,680 --> 00:12:48,560
But the timing now for the church's calling, you as the church, is to be baptized in the

154
00:12:48,560 --> 00:12:52,640
Holy Spirit and go out as witnesses to the ends of the earth.

155
00:12:52,640 --> 00:12:55,600
So that's the calling on the church.

156
00:12:55,600 --> 00:13:03,240
And here in this piece of scripture we see the two callings up beside each other.

157
00:13:03,240 --> 00:13:09,120
And that means that someone that comes along and tries to say that the church has replaced

158
00:13:09,120 --> 00:13:16,320
Israel in the plan of God doesn't understand the calling on Israel and the Jewish people

159
00:13:16,320 --> 00:13:19,120
and the calling that's on the church.

160
00:13:19,120 --> 00:13:26,640
There's two very different callings and we see them here in this scripture.

161
00:13:26,640 --> 00:13:29,360
Two are very, they're both very essential.

162
00:13:29,360 --> 00:13:31,080
They're both critical.

163
00:13:31,080 --> 00:13:33,200
They're both very exciting.

164
00:13:33,200 --> 00:13:35,880
But they are slightly different.

165
00:13:35,880 --> 00:13:41,680
Now Jesus is then taken up into a cloud and they say you will see him return as you've

166
00:13:41,680 --> 00:13:42,880
seen him go.

167
00:13:42,880 --> 00:13:49,720
And that is our basic and fundamental belief in the return of Jesus.

168
00:13:49,720 --> 00:13:52,840
This is what the angels are talking about.

169
00:13:52,840 --> 00:13:57,800
So I find this to be a very exciting piece of scripture that kind of helps bring the

170
00:13:57,800 --> 00:14:00,160
pieces together.

171
00:14:00,160 --> 00:14:06,600
But that leads us up to the third most exciting portion of scripture which we also read this

172
00:14:06,600 --> 00:14:07,760
week.

173
00:14:07,760 --> 00:14:13,760
And that is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon those disciples and the early church.

174
00:14:13,760 --> 00:14:17,240
Let's read about it in Acts chapter 2.

175
00:14:17,240 --> 00:14:22,200
When the day of Pentecost came they were all together in one place.

176
00:14:22,200 --> 00:14:28,560
Suddenly a sound like a blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole

177
00:14:28,560 --> 00:14:30,880
house where they were sitting.

178
00:14:30,880 --> 00:14:36,360
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of

179
00:14:36,360 --> 00:14:37,720
them.

180
00:14:37,720 --> 00:14:42,840
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the

181
00:14:42,840 --> 00:14:45,720
Spirit enabled them.

182
00:14:45,720 --> 00:14:55,880
Now they were staying in Jerusalem God fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

183
00:14:55,880 --> 00:14:59,240
So let's talk about this.

184
00:14:59,240 --> 00:15:01,920
Point number one.

185
00:15:01,920 --> 00:15:04,400
Where did this happen?

186
00:15:04,400 --> 00:15:11,000
Well many people think that the day of Pentecost happened in the upper room and the reason is

187
00:15:11,000 --> 00:15:18,040
because Acts chapter 1 closes with them in the upper room.

188
00:15:18,040 --> 00:15:24,440
Acts chapter 2 opens then here on the day of Pentecost.

189
00:15:24,440 --> 00:15:32,000
But the problem with this event taking place in the upper room is the fact that they were

190
00:15:32,000 --> 00:15:37,720
able to speak to like all of Jerusalem from there and all of these Jewish people were

191
00:15:37,720 --> 00:15:40,440
gathered there and heard them.

192
00:15:40,440 --> 00:15:44,760
That would not have happened in the upper room.

193
00:15:44,760 --> 00:15:47,720
So let's look closer at the text.

194
00:15:47,720 --> 00:15:54,480
When the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place and suddenly a sound

195
00:15:54,480 --> 00:16:01,600
like a violent wind came from heaven and filled the house where they were sitting.

196
00:16:01,600 --> 00:16:08,360
Well where would they have been gathering on the day of Pentecost but the temple?

197
00:16:08,360 --> 00:16:13,320
The day of Pentecost was one of the three great feasts of Israel.

198
00:16:13,320 --> 00:16:18,760
They would have been gathered in the temple and when it says that the spirit, the sound

199
00:16:18,760 --> 00:16:28,120
of this wind filled the house where they were, well in Hebrew the temple was commonly called

200
00:16:28,120 --> 00:16:31,560
the house, Hibayah.

201
00:16:31,560 --> 00:16:37,360
And so it could be that this is referring to the temple.

202
00:16:37,360 --> 00:16:43,600
And it says that they saw over tongues of fire on each one of them and then they began

203
00:16:43,600 --> 00:16:49,240
to speak and it says now there were staying in Jerusalem, God fearing Jews from every

204
00:16:49,240 --> 00:16:52,640
nation under heaven.

205
00:16:52,640 --> 00:16:56,000
So why is that?

206
00:16:56,000 --> 00:16:59,280
Because it was the day of Pentecost.

207
00:16:59,280 --> 00:17:01,520
What is the day of Pentecost?

208
00:17:01,520 --> 00:17:07,000
In Hebrew it's called Shavuot which means weeks.

209
00:17:07,000 --> 00:17:15,560
And the idea is this, on Passover you begin counting, the day after Passover, you begin

210
00:17:15,560 --> 00:17:19,640
counting 49 days which is 7 weeks.

211
00:17:19,640 --> 00:17:23,560
Shavuot, weeks, 7 weeks.

212
00:17:23,560 --> 00:17:30,080
When the 7 weeks are complete the very next day is the 50th day and that is the day for

213
00:17:30,080 --> 00:17:32,240
the celebration of the harvest.

214
00:17:32,240 --> 00:17:36,120
Now let's back up.

215
00:17:36,120 --> 00:17:42,400
You have Passover and then the first Sabbath after Passover and the very next day is considered

216
00:17:42,400 --> 00:17:48,120
the feast of first fruits and that's when they wave the very first offering of the grain

217
00:17:48,120 --> 00:17:49,920
harvest.

218
00:17:49,920 --> 00:17:58,280
Then they count 50 days and on the 50th day is when they celebrate the grain harvest.

219
00:17:58,280 --> 00:18:05,600
So it is taken 50 days for it to mature and this is the celebration of the harvest.

220
00:18:05,600 --> 00:18:10,720
In Greek it's called Pentecost which means 50th.

221
00:18:10,720 --> 00:18:15,920
So it's the 50th day after Passover.

222
00:18:15,920 --> 00:18:21,520
And Jews come from all over the world just like they do for Passover, the first feast,

223
00:18:21,520 --> 00:18:27,440
Shavuot or Pentecost the second feast and Tabernacles the third feast.

224
00:18:27,440 --> 00:18:34,080
So there were Jews in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven it says.

225
00:18:34,080 --> 00:18:40,000
And therefore when the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples who were gathered together in

226
00:18:40,000 --> 00:18:46,680
one place in the temple praying it was spread about throughout Jerusalem.

227
00:18:46,680 --> 00:18:51,080
Many Jews saw this and wondered what in the world is going on because we're here from

228
00:18:51,080 --> 00:18:54,240
every nation we hear all these languages.

229
00:18:54,240 --> 00:19:00,480
What is going on and at that point is when Peter stands and he preaches this magnificent

230
00:19:00,480 --> 00:19:08,400
sermon, I believe they're right in front of the temple or right inside the temple gates

231
00:19:08,400 --> 00:19:11,120
to all of these Jews who were gathered.

232
00:19:11,120 --> 00:19:17,280
And it says that in that day 3,000 were baptized and added to the early church.

233
00:19:17,280 --> 00:19:20,760
Now where would they be baptized?

234
00:19:20,760 --> 00:19:28,440
Well right outside the temple they have uncovered today archaeology has uncovered many baptismal

235
00:19:28,440 --> 00:19:35,240
what are called mikvah and they were the baths for ritual purity before you'd enter the

236
00:19:35,240 --> 00:19:36,800
temple area.

237
00:19:36,800 --> 00:19:41,440
And then down the hill was the big pool of Siloam that's where many people would go and

238
00:19:41,440 --> 00:19:46,040
dip in the waters to be ritually pure to enter the temple.

239
00:19:46,040 --> 00:19:54,920
So there was plenty of space and plenty of baptismal waters to baptize these 3,000 people

240
00:19:54,920 --> 00:19:57,080
and add them to the church that day.

241
00:19:57,080 --> 00:20:00,760
All that would have happened right there at the temple.

242
00:20:00,760 --> 00:20:03,000
Now this is exciting.

243
00:20:03,000 --> 00:20:09,520
The Acts goes on to describe the early church and those first few days and weeks and they

244
00:20:09,520 --> 00:20:14,200
were in unity and they were praying for each other and going from home to home and they

245
00:20:14,200 --> 00:20:20,960
shared everything in common and it was just the highlight really of the early church.

246
00:20:20,960 --> 00:20:25,920
And then we have the story of the martyrdom of Stephen and you're going to be reading

247
00:20:25,920 --> 00:20:32,360
it I'm not going to tell the story but it's after this that there's great persecution

248
00:20:32,360 --> 00:20:39,840
upon the early church and it actually begins to be scattered out of Jerusalem.

249
00:20:39,840 --> 00:20:45,160
But getting a little bit ahead of the story here but that's the sequence of our story

250
00:20:45,160 --> 00:20:52,720
this week and the highlight of our three events being the resurrection of Jesus, his great

251
00:20:52,720 --> 00:21:01,880
commission to the disciples and this understanding the future of the kingdom coming to Israel

252
00:21:01,880 --> 00:21:08,200
and the future of the message of the kingdom that the church is taking place to the world.

253
00:21:08,200 --> 00:21:14,240
And then the third great event being the baptism of the Holy Spirit there on Pentecost.

254
00:21:14,240 --> 00:21:19,960
So as we close today I just want to point out something that's even more exciting.

255
00:21:19,960 --> 00:21:26,800
A little detail in the these three threads of story.

256
00:21:26,800 --> 00:21:35,560
What are the odds that Jesus would die on Passover that he would be resurrected three

257
00:21:35,560 --> 00:21:43,280
days later on the day of the first fruits, the festival of first fruits and that the

258
00:21:43,280 --> 00:21:51,440
Holy Spirit would be poured out on Pentecost or what's known in Hebrew as Shavuot.

259
00:21:51,440 --> 00:21:57,600
I was reading an article by a writer just this week and I don't know if he made up

260
00:21:57,600 --> 00:22:03,800
the number or if he somehow calculated it but he said you know it's like one in 48

261
00:22:03,800 --> 00:22:05,200
million.

262
00:22:05,200 --> 00:22:12,240
What are the chances that these events would take place on these dates.

263
00:22:12,240 --> 00:22:20,440
So Jesus died on Passover at the very day and the very time when the lambs were being

264
00:22:20,440 --> 00:22:27,520
sacrificed in the temple for the Passover meal that was to take place that night.

265
00:22:27,520 --> 00:22:33,720
The historian Josephus said that at the time of Jesus during Passover there were like

266
00:22:33,720 --> 00:22:39,960
250,000 lambs that were sacrificed.

267
00:22:39,960 --> 00:22:42,400
That is a lot of lambs.

268
00:22:42,400 --> 00:22:49,720
That is a huge operation and at the very time that that's taking place Jesus dies on the

269
00:22:49,720 --> 00:22:58,040
cross just hopskipping a jump away actually on the same mountain range as the temple just

270
00:22:58,040 --> 00:23:01,400
over sort of on the edge of it.

271
00:23:01,400 --> 00:23:07,040
And on that day that Jesus died on the cross of course the sky turned dark and the temple

272
00:23:07,040 --> 00:23:15,560
curtain was torn from the top down that the way was being made clear between God and man

273
00:23:15,560 --> 00:23:19,960
that the curtain was being done away with.

274
00:23:19,960 --> 00:23:28,680
That all happened on the day that the Jewish people were carrying out the sacrifice to

275
00:23:28,680 --> 00:23:34,640
atone for their sins, to cover for their sins.

276
00:23:34,640 --> 00:23:40,240
Of course in remembrance of the Exodus out of Egypt when God had them to kill a lamb

277
00:23:40,240 --> 00:23:45,760
and to put the blood of the lamb on their doorsteps and on their doorposts.

278
00:23:45,760 --> 00:23:51,960
And by doing that then the curse passed over them and they stayed safe.

279
00:23:51,960 --> 00:23:57,840
And Jesus' blood spilled on the cross that day so that you and I can apply that blood

280
00:23:57,840 --> 00:24:05,760
spiritually over our lives and we can come into the protection of God and that way is

281
00:24:05,760 --> 00:24:13,480
being made open for us through the blood of Jesus on that very day.

282
00:24:13,480 --> 00:24:19,760
But then that he is resurrected three days later and he told the disciples that it would

283
00:24:19,760 --> 00:24:21,480
be three days.

284
00:24:21,480 --> 00:24:24,960
This was prophesied that it would be three days.

285
00:24:24,960 --> 00:24:35,200
Well it just so happens that on that year that three days meant he was resurrected early

286
00:24:35,200 --> 00:24:43,080
on Sunday morning the day after the Sabbath and that week the day after the Sabbath was

287
00:24:43,080 --> 00:24:50,720
a, I should say every year, the day after that first Sabbath is the festival of first

288
00:24:50,720 --> 00:24:51,720
fruits.

289
00:24:51,720 --> 00:24:59,760
It just so happened that year that the day of first fruits was the third day.

290
00:24:59,760 --> 00:25:06,080
And so Jesus is resurrected on that day the first fruits and the apostle Paul said in

291
00:25:06,080 --> 00:25:15,120
1 Corinthians 15, 20 to 23 now he said, But Christ has indeed been risen from the dead

292
00:25:15,120 --> 00:25:22,720
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep for since death came through a man

293
00:25:22,720 --> 00:25:30,000
the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man for as in Adam all died so in Christ

294
00:25:30,000 --> 00:25:39,480
all will be made alive but each in turn Christ the first fruits then when he comes those

295
00:25:39,480 --> 00:25:42,560
who belong to him.

296
00:25:42,560 --> 00:25:51,360
What happened on the festival of first fruits and then what is the chance that even after

297
00:25:51,360 --> 00:26:01,760
those two events that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit would have happened on the festival

298
00:26:01,760 --> 00:26:10,920
of the harvest and you know just as I explained Shavuot or Pentecost is 50 days after Passover

299
00:26:10,920 --> 00:26:19,400
when they've been preparing the harvest waiting for the harvest the grain harvest and it also

300
00:26:19,400 --> 00:26:27,160
though was a celebration of the giving of the law at Sinai because 50 days after the

301
00:26:27,160 --> 00:26:34,640
Israelites had the Exodus out of Egypt is when the law was given to them in Sinai so

302
00:26:34,640 --> 00:26:42,120
this day is also the celebration of the giving of the law at Sinai so the Holy Spirit is

303
00:26:42,120 --> 00:26:49,480
poured out and begins the harvest of souls that's going to continue throughout the

304
00:26:49,480 --> 00:26:57,880
earth and the Holy Spirit is poured out to write the law on our hearts remember the new

305
00:26:57,880 --> 00:27:04,080
covenant was going to write the law not on tablets of stone like in Sinai but this time

306
00:27:04,080 --> 00:27:09,440
it was going to be in our hearts so that we would be guided by the Spirit we would be

307
00:27:09,440 --> 00:27:19,160
guided to obey the Lord by the Holy Spirit and this happened just on that celebration

308
00:27:19,160 --> 00:27:29,800
now what are the chances it was all by divine design now let me close I want to read again

309
00:27:29,800 --> 00:27:34,920
a scripture I read earlier because I want you to hear it now in this context Matthew

310
00:27:34,920 --> 00:27:43,840
24 14 and this gospel of the kingdom which is this coming kingdom of God will be preached

311
00:27:43,840 --> 00:27:53,160
in the whole world this is the church's commission as a testimony to all nations and then the

312
00:27:53,160 --> 00:28:01,000
end will come that is the day that the angels told the disciples he's going to come back

313
00:28:01,000 --> 00:28:08,800
just as you saw him go and the apostle John saw this and wrote about it in his great vision

314
00:28:08,800 --> 00:28:14,800
called Revelation the last book of the New Testament one of the very last chapters chapter

315
00:28:14,800 --> 00:28:23,120
21 this is what John saw then I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven

316
00:28:23,120 --> 00:28:30,320
and the first earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea I saw the holy city

317
00:28:30,320 --> 00:28:37,760
the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride beautifully dressed

318
00:28:37,760 --> 00:28:45,560
for her husband and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying look God's dwelling place

319
00:28:45,560 --> 00:28:52,760
is now among the people and he will dwell with them they will be his people and God

320
00:28:52,760 --> 00:29:01,640
himself will be with them and be their God we are to go forth and to preach this day

321
