Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The Feast of Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew) occurs exactly 50 days after the first Sabbath after Passover and is largely associated with the wheat harvest. However, there is a strong rabbinic tradition that this holiday also commemorates the giving of the law which occurred 50 days after the exodus from Egypt. Why did the Lord choose this day to pour out the Holy Spirit in Acts 2? Listen in for the exciting answers.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,200
Well, the Feast of Weeks occurs exactly fifty days after the first Sabbath after the Passover.

2
00:00:08,200 --> 00:00:10,640
It is largely associated with the wheat harvest.

3
00:00:10,640 --> 00:00:17,040
And one of the requirements was the priests were to wave two loaves of bread before the

4
00:00:17,040 --> 00:00:19,440
Lord in the tabernacle.

5
00:00:19,440 --> 00:00:25,880
Now why do you think that the Lord chose this day to pour out the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter

6
00:00:25,880 --> 00:00:27,080
2?

7
00:00:27,080 --> 00:00:29,960
And why do we call it Pentecost?

8
00:00:29,960 --> 00:00:32,080
Listen in for some answers.

9
00:00:32,080 --> 00:00:37,000
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional when I seek to share a little inspiration

10
00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:41,640
and bring a little peace to the clothes of your very busy week.

11
00:00:41,640 --> 00:00:48,000
This week we're taking a break from our Torah portions because this week is the Feast of

12
00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:52,080
Weeks, or what we know in the Church as Pentecost.

13
00:00:52,080 --> 00:00:56,320
Now most Christians are familiar with the term Pentecost as it's associated with the

14
00:00:56,320 --> 00:01:00,280
outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter 2.

15
00:01:00,280 --> 00:01:07,560
But most are largely unfamiliar with the Hebrew name of Pentecost, which is Shavuot.

16
00:01:07,560 --> 00:01:09,080
So let's review.

17
00:01:09,080 --> 00:01:14,840
Two weeks ago we talked about Leviticus 23 and the list of the Feast of the Lord.

18
00:01:14,840 --> 00:01:18,320
There were spring Feast, summer Feast, and fall Feast.

19
00:01:18,320 --> 00:01:21,440
Shavuot is the summer Feast.

20
00:01:21,440 --> 00:01:23,000
There were three Feasts of the Lord.

21
00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:29,440
It was required that all the Israelites were to come up before Him in Jerusalem.

22
00:01:29,440 --> 00:01:36,760
So these were known as the Pilgrimage Feast that was Passover, Weeks, and Tabernacle.

23
00:01:36,760 --> 00:01:41,360
So now Shavuot in Hebrew means Weeks.

24
00:01:41,360 --> 00:01:44,680
So the Feast of Weeks is the Feast of Shavuot in Hebrew.

25
00:01:44,680 --> 00:01:51,880
It was largely a Feast of the Wheat Harvest and it occurred exactly 50 days after the

26
00:01:51,880 --> 00:01:55,160
first Shavuot after Passover.

27
00:01:55,160 --> 00:02:00,880
This was the first day after seven weeks or the 50th day and it was called the Feast

28
00:02:00,880 --> 00:02:01,880
of Weeks.

29
00:02:01,880 --> 00:02:06,840
It's also called the Feast of the Harvest of the First Fruits and it's also called

30
00:02:06,840 --> 00:02:09,840
the First Fruits of the Wheat Harvest.

31
00:02:09,840 --> 00:02:17,080
So in addition to that, there's a strong rabbinic tradition that says it was on the

32
00:02:17,080 --> 00:02:23,120
50th day after Passover that the law was given on Sinai.

33
00:02:23,120 --> 00:02:29,120
Now nowhere in Scripture does it say that, but this is a very strong tradition rabbinically.

34
00:02:29,120 --> 00:02:34,720
But when you look at the parallels between the giving of the law on Sinai and the outpouring

35
00:02:34,720 --> 00:02:39,000
of the Holy Spirit, you really do have to wonder.

36
00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:48,600
So both events brought an earth-shaking paradigm shift, the first one for Israel under Moses.

37
00:02:48,600 --> 00:02:53,320
The second one is for all believers in Jesus.

38
00:02:53,320 --> 00:02:58,360
Now both events were accompanied by supernatural phenomenon.

39
00:02:58,360 --> 00:03:03,960
You know at Sinai there was thunder and a very loud trumpet sound and on the day of

40
00:03:03,960 --> 00:03:09,840
Pentecost there was a noise like a violent wind that filled the place.

41
00:03:09,840 --> 00:03:14,720
At Sinai there were lightning flashes and on the day of Pentecost there was what appeared

42
00:03:14,720 --> 00:03:17,440
to be tongues of fire.

43
00:03:17,440 --> 00:03:24,280
At Sinai the presence of the Lord was so thick it covered the mountain in a form of smoke

44
00:03:24,280 --> 00:03:26,280
and fire.

45
00:03:26,280 --> 00:03:34,320
On the day of Pentecost the glory of the Lord fell as tongues of fire on the people.

46
00:03:34,320 --> 00:03:40,680
The phenomenon of both events also evoked very strong emotions and response from the

47
00:03:40,680 --> 00:03:41,840
people.

48
00:03:41,840 --> 00:03:47,600
At Sinai it says that when the people saw this and heard this they trembled and stood

49
00:03:47,600 --> 00:03:49,520
at a distance.

50
00:03:49,520 --> 00:03:56,960
On the day of Pentecost the crowd was bewildered, amazed and astonished at the sound and what

51
00:03:56,960 --> 00:04:00,760
they were hearing in their own languages.

52
00:04:00,760 --> 00:04:05,640
But as I close I have to mention to you Jeremiah 31.

53
00:04:05,640 --> 00:04:10,920
This is the famous scripture that talks about where the prophet Jeremiah foretells of the

54
00:04:10,920 --> 00:04:17,080
day when God is going to make a new covenant with the people of Israel and it says that

55
00:04:17,080 --> 00:04:24,760
their sins will be forgiven and the law will be written on their hearts.

56
00:04:24,760 --> 00:04:31,520
Here on the day of Pentecost after Jesus has cut the new covenant with his own blood he

57
00:04:31,520 --> 00:04:38,960
ascended to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit on the day of the giving of the law so that

58
00:04:38,960 --> 00:04:43,000
the Spirit would write the law on our hearts.

59
00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:51,960
This is just another example of how exciting the Bible is and the power and sovereignty

60
00:04:51,960 --> 00:04:58,680
of our God, the Creator of the universe, that he not only fulfills his promises and confirms

61
00:04:58,680 --> 00:05:07,120
his word, he does it at the very exact time that he has already foreordained thousands

62
00:05:07,120 --> 00:05:08,760
of years earlier.

63
00:05:08,760 --> 00:05:14,880
Now if that's not exciting, I don't know what is and so with that I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
