Qualifications for Leadership

Qualifications for Leadership

Out of Zion with Susan Michael

This week we read two significant stories—both illustrating qualifications for godly leadership. God promised Aaron’s grandson, Phinehas, an everlasting priesthood due to his zeal for God and commitment to righteousness—a necessary requirement for the high priest. And Joshua was chosen to succeed Moses because of the Holy Spirit that was in him. That was necessary because it would be through the Spirit that God would guide and direct the next generation to take possession of their promised land.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,920
This week, we read two very significant stories, both illustrating qualifications for godly

2
00:00:07,920 --> 00:00:09,760
leadership.

3
00:00:09,760 --> 00:00:16,200
God promised Aaron's grandson, Phineas, an everlasting priesthood due to his zeal for

4
00:00:16,200 --> 00:00:23,000
the things of God, for righteousness, a very necessary requirement for the high priest.

5
00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:31,120
But then Joshua was chosen to succeed Moses because he was filled with the Holy Spirit.

6
00:00:31,120 --> 00:00:36,480
And that was necessary because it was through the Holy Spirit that God was going to guide

7
00:00:36,480 --> 00:00:42,240
and direct the children of Israel to take possession of their holy land.

8
00:00:42,240 --> 00:00:46,360
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional, when I seek to share a little

9
00:00:46,360 --> 00:00:52,440
inspiration and bring a little peace to the close of your very busy week.

10
00:00:52,440 --> 00:00:59,640
This week's Torah portion is from the book of Numbers 25 verse 10 through 30 verse 1.

11
00:00:59,640 --> 00:01:04,000
It's called Pinkus, which is Hebrew for Phineas.

12
00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:11,680
So last week, the story of Balak or Balak and Balaam, a very comical story in a way,

13
00:01:11,680 --> 00:01:17,480
but a very serious one where Balak hires the false prophet Balaam to curse the people of

14
00:01:17,480 --> 00:01:20,680
God so that he could defeat them in war.

15
00:01:20,680 --> 00:01:24,240
God intervenes and instead Balam speaks blessings over the people.

16
00:01:24,240 --> 00:01:26,160
He speaks the truth.

17
00:01:26,160 --> 00:01:34,120
Now the scripture then blames Balaam for advising Balak how to now defeat the children of Israel

18
00:01:34,120 --> 00:01:36,000
in a completely different way.

19
00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:41,880
And that was by using the women to seduce them into pagan worship and away from the God of

20
00:01:41,880 --> 00:01:45,680
Israel who was really the source of their strength.

21
00:01:45,680 --> 00:01:49,960
So the women of Moab began to entice the men of Israel.

22
00:01:49,960 --> 00:01:57,040
And to Harlotry, which was probably temple prostitution in worship of the God Bail of

23
00:01:57,040 --> 00:01:58,200
Pior.

24
00:01:58,200 --> 00:02:05,600
So the scripture calls it a scheme or it was a trick of these women because of Balaam's

25
00:02:05,600 --> 00:02:07,760
a scheming in his advice.

26
00:02:07,760 --> 00:02:14,440
So God's anger was aroused against his children for their sin against him and a plague begins.

27
00:02:14,440 --> 00:02:20,800
And one of the Israelite men actually brings one of these Midianite women, Harlot, into

28
00:02:20,800 --> 00:02:22,640
the camp of Israel.

29
00:02:22,640 --> 00:02:29,680
And at that Aaron's grandson, Phineas, executes the both of them and the plague is stopped.

30
00:02:29,680 --> 00:02:36,840
So point is this, beware, because our enemy has various tactics to defeat us and bring

31
00:02:36,840 --> 00:02:37,840
us down.

32
00:02:37,840 --> 00:02:44,040
If he cannot defeat us outright, he is going to somehow try to draw us into sin and away

33
00:02:44,040 --> 00:02:46,240
from God.

34
00:02:46,240 --> 00:02:50,280
Now this week's reading picks up in the middle of that story and therefore the name of this

35
00:02:50,280 --> 00:02:53,440
week is Pinchas or Phineas.

36
00:02:53,440 --> 00:02:58,240
He is Aaron's grandson and has demonstrated great zeal for the things of God.

37
00:02:58,240 --> 00:03:04,760
So God rewards him with the promise of an everlasting priesthood.

38
00:03:04,760 --> 00:03:11,880
Yes, he was of the line of Aaron, but because Phineas demonstrated great zeal for the things

39
00:03:11,880 --> 00:03:17,840
of God and a great commitment to doing things the right way, the righteousness of God, God

40
00:03:17,840 --> 00:03:22,520
sealed the deal with the descendants of Aaron.

41
00:03:22,520 --> 00:03:27,360
So then we have our second story, the commissioning of Joshua.

42
00:03:27,360 --> 00:03:32,360
Joshua is going to succeed Moses and there's a lot more we're going to talk about Joshua

43
00:03:32,360 --> 00:03:36,400
at the end of our tour study in a few weeks.

44
00:03:36,400 --> 00:03:42,440
So today I just want to talk about the transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua and how

45
00:03:42,440 --> 00:03:44,400
it was conducted.

46
00:03:44,400 --> 00:03:47,040
First of all, God chose Joshua.

47
00:03:47,040 --> 00:03:50,840
God chose the person to carry on after Moses.

48
00:03:50,840 --> 00:03:57,840
Then secondly, he chose this person based on the fact that he was filled with the Spirit

49
00:03:57,840 --> 00:03:59,320
of God.

50
00:03:59,320 --> 00:04:04,760
Then Moses was instructed to make the announcement to the children of Israel and to commission

51
00:04:04,760 --> 00:04:09,960
Joshua in front of all of them so they would understand that Joshua now was moving into

52
00:04:09,960 --> 00:04:11,320
leadership.

53
00:04:11,320 --> 00:04:17,320
And then it says that Moses gave Joshua some of his authority.

54
00:04:17,320 --> 00:04:19,320
So it was a gradual transfer.

55
00:04:19,320 --> 00:04:25,200
You could say Moses mentored Joshua into full authority.

56
00:04:25,200 --> 00:04:32,480
So for this week, let's be mindful of these two examples of both Phineas and Joshua.

57
00:04:32,480 --> 00:04:38,400
If you're desirous of leadership position or just wanting to do more for the Lord, work

58
00:04:38,400 --> 00:04:43,640
on building these two qualifications in your life.

59
00:04:43,640 --> 00:04:50,400
Zeal for the things of God and the power of the Holy Spirit in your life.

60
00:04:50,400 --> 00:04:53,040
Those are two key qualifications.

61
00:04:53,040 --> 00:05:00,080
But also be willing to step into authority and leadership gradually.

62
00:05:00,080 --> 00:05:02,480
Work with those that went before you.

63
00:05:02,480 --> 00:05:07,840
Come under their authority that they can raise you up into the leadership position God has

64
00:05:07,840 --> 00:05:09,840
called you to.

65
00:05:09,840 --> 00:05:31,320
And with this, I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
