Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The children of Israel had a special calling and relationship with God—not because they were any more special than other people but because of God’s promises to their forefathers. They had been chosen long before, and their forefathers had entered a covenant with God. If they would live in obedience to the commandments—the terms of their covenant—they would be blessed. You and I can walk in those same blessings through Jesus because God is the same—He never changes, and He rewards those who walk in love and obedience with Him.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,880
Well, the children of Israel had a special calling and relationship with God, not because

2
00:00:05,880 --> 00:00:11,720
they were any more special than any other people, but because of God's promises to their

3
00:00:11,720 --> 00:00:13,120
forefathers.

4
00:00:13,120 --> 00:00:19,440
They had been chosen long before, and their forefathers had entered into covenant with

5
00:00:19,440 --> 00:00:20,440
God.

6
00:00:20,440 --> 00:00:26,160
Now, if they would live in obedience to the commandments of that covenant, they would

7
00:00:26,160 --> 00:00:27,160
be blessed.

8
00:00:27,160 --> 00:00:34,000
Now, you and I can walk in those same blessings through Jesus Christ, because God is the same,

9
00:00:34,000 --> 00:00:41,200
and He never changes, and He rewards those who walk in love and obedience with Him.

10
00:00:41,200 --> 00:00:45,880
So, welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional, when I seek to share a little

11
00:00:45,880 --> 00:00:51,600
inspiration and just bring a little peace to the close of your very busy week.

12
00:00:51,600 --> 00:00:59,840
This week's Torah portion comes out of Deuteronomy chapter 7, 12, through chapter 11, verse 25.

13
00:00:59,840 --> 00:01:02,080
It's called Ekev.

14
00:01:02,080 --> 00:01:05,880
It means, and if you obey, meaning these rules.

15
00:01:05,880 --> 00:01:12,760
So, now, in chapter 7, verse 6 through 9, God makes it very clear, or through Moses,

16
00:01:12,760 --> 00:01:18,840
it makes it very clear why they've been chosen for this special relationship.

17
00:01:18,840 --> 00:01:20,440
Let's listen.

18
00:01:20,440 --> 00:01:24,760
For you are a holy people to the Lord your God.

19
00:01:24,760 --> 00:01:33,240
The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all

20
00:01:33,240 --> 00:01:35,840
the peoples on the face of the earth.

21
00:01:35,840 --> 00:01:40,960
The Lord did not set His love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number

22
00:01:40,960 --> 00:01:42,560
than any other people.

23
00:01:42,560 --> 00:01:45,200
For you were the least of all peoples.

24
00:01:45,200 --> 00:01:51,040
But because the Lord loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your

25
00:01:51,040 --> 00:01:56,800
fathers, the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house

26
00:01:56,800 --> 00:02:01,200
of bondage from the hand of Pharaoh, King of Egypt.

27
00:02:01,200 --> 00:02:08,600
Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant

28
00:02:08,600 --> 00:02:17,320
and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.

29
00:02:17,320 --> 00:02:23,240
So here, Moses is telling them, you are a special treasure to the Lord.

30
00:02:23,240 --> 00:02:29,200
You are a holy people, which means a people that have been set apart unto God.

31
00:02:29,200 --> 00:02:34,760
It's not based on their size, which means their strength or anything about them.

32
00:02:34,760 --> 00:02:41,360
But it's because centuries before, God had made promises to their forefathers, and He

33
00:02:41,360 --> 00:02:44,760
had created this people and He loved them.

34
00:02:44,760 --> 00:02:51,400
He repeats this a couple of chapters later, chapter 9 verse 4, for do not think in your

35
00:02:51,400 --> 00:02:57,960
heart that the Lord your God has cast them out before you saying, because of my righteousness

36
00:02:57,960 --> 00:03:01,560
the Lord has brought me into possess this land.

37
00:03:01,560 --> 00:03:06,840
But it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out

38
00:03:06,840 --> 00:03:08,160
before you.

39
00:03:08,160 --> 00:03:12,760
So here we're talking about when they go in and take possession of the land, not to

40
00:03:12,760 --> 00:03:17,880
think that it's because they're so great that God is giving them the land.

41
00:03:17,880 --> 00:03:23,960
But Moses is saying here, actually, it's because of the great wickedness of the people in the

42
00:03:23,960 --> 00:03:26,440
land now.

43
00:03:26,440 --> 00:03:32,240
And another very interesting thought about the land we read this week in chapter 11 verse

44
00:03:32,240 --> 00:03:36,240
12, how much God loves the land.

45
00:03:36,240 --> 00:03:41,320
That's why he's getting rid of the wickedness that's defiling that land, and he's putting

46
00:03:41,320 --> 00:03:43,120
his children there.

47
00:03:43,120 --> 00:03:45,160
Let's read it verse 12.

48
00:03:45,160 --> 00:03:48,840
It's a land for which the Lord your God cares.

49
00:03:48,840 --> 00:03:55,760
The eyes of the Lord your God are always on it from the beginning of the year to the very

50
00:03:55,760 --> 00:03:58,120
end of the year.

51
00:03:58,120 --> 00:04:06,440
So God loves the land that he is giving to his children whom he also loves.

52
00:04:06,440 --> 00:04:12,280
And then we read, I want to point out one thing this week, that the blessings of walking

53
00:04:12,280 --> 00:04:17,640
in fellowship with this God and in obedience to the terms of the covenant that he made

54
00:04:17,640 --> 00:04:19,160
with them.

55
00:04:19,160 --> 00:04:20,320
Very interesting.

56
00:04:20,320 --> 00:04:23,640
First of all, one of the blessings was to get wealth.

57
00:04:23,640 --> 00:04:28,960
Year 8 verse 18, and you shall remember the Lord your God for it is he who gives you the

58
00:04:28,960 --> 00:04:36,520
power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers

59
00:04:36,520 --> 00:04:39,840
and it is this day.

60
00:04:39,840 --> 00:04:45,640
So it is God who gives wealth in order to establish his word and his covenants.

61
00:04:45,640 --> 00:04:49,680
They also, it's because of God that they would get rain.

62
00:04:49,680 --> 00:04:56,400
Verse 13 and 14, and it shall be that if you earnestly obey my commandments, which I command

63
00:04:56,400 --> 00:05:02,760
you today, to love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and all your soul,

64
00:05:02,760 --> 00:05:08,680
then I will give you the rain for your land and its season, the early rain and the latter

65
00:05:08,680 --> 00:05:14,460
rain that you may gather in your grain, your new wine and your oil.

66
00:05:14,460 --> 00:05:20,200
So he not only helps them to get wealth, he helps their crops to prosper by providing

67
00:05:20,200 --> 00:05:21,200
rain.

68
00:05:21,200 --> 00:05:25,600
God is the source of the rain in times of need.

69
00:05:25,600 --> 00:05:27,920
And then there's the promise of healing.

70
00:05:27,920 --> 00:05:34,080
Chapter 7 verse 15, and the Lord will take away from you all sickness.

71
00:05:34,080 --> 00:05:40,160
So healing and blessing is part of the Mosaic covenant, just as it is part of the new covenant

72
00:05:40,160 --> 00:05:41,760
through Jesus.

73
00:05:41,760 --> 00:05:45,280
Because it's the same God, he doesn't change.

74
00:05:45,280 --> 00:05:53,680
And the rewards for walking in love and obedience with him are the same today as they were then.

75
00:05:53,680 --> 00:06:12,360
And with that, I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
