Out of Zion with Susan Michael

After a period of repentance and the Day of Atonement, the Feast of Tabernacles begins. God commanded the children of Israel to rejoice for the full seven days and celebrate His provision for the Israelites during their wilderness wanderings and of rain for an abundant harvest. During the water libation ceremony the people prayed for rain for the coming year’s harvest—and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the Messianic era. It was in this context that Jesus proclaimed He was the source of living waters. According to the prophet Zechariah, the gentiles would one day celebrate this feast.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:09,240
Well, as we end our ten days of introspection and reflection and repentance and ended with

2
00:00:09,240 --> 00:00:18,080
the Day of Atonement, we now enter the seven-day feast of tabernacles known as a feast of rejoicing,

3
00:00:18,080 --> 00:00:22,720
what a fun time we all will have, Jew and Gentile.

4
00:00:22,720 --> 00:00:25,400
We're all invited to celebrate it.

5
00:00:25,400 --> 00:00:30,200
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional, when I seek to share just a little

6
00:00:30,200 --> 00:00:36,440
inspiration and bring a little peace to the close of your very busy week.

7
00:00:36,440 --> 00:00:42,200
The Feast of Tabernacles is a seven-day feast designed to remember God's provision for

8
00:00:42,200 --> 00:00:46,480
the Israelites during their wilderness days.

9
00:00:46,480 --> 00:00:51,360
But once they took possession of the land, it became a celebration of God's provision

10
00:00:51,360 --> 00:00:54,640
for them in a harvest.

11
00:00:54,640 --> 00:01:00,720
And as the Israelites celebrated this year's harvest, they then began to pray for rain

12
00:01:00,720 --> 00:01:05,120
so that they would have an abundant harvest next year as well.

13
00:01:05,120 --> 00:01:11,080
So as the tradition developed over the years of how to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles,

14
00:01:11,080 --> 00:01:17,400
a special water libation ceremony became a critical part of it when the high priests

15
00:01:17,400 --> 00:01:24,600
would go down to the pool of Siloam in procession, and they would take their beautiful vessels

16
00:01:24,600 --> 00:01:31,120
from the temple and they would dip it into the living waters of the Gehon Springs there

17
00:01:31,120 --> 00:01:37,080
at the pool of Siloam, and they would bring this living water up, process up the hill,

18
00:01:37,080 --> 00:01:41,560
if you've been there, it's up the hill to the temple mount.

19
00:01:41,560 --> 00:01:48,840
They would pour that water out over the altar, praying for rain, the praying for an outpouring

20
00:01:48,840 --> 00:01:51,160
of God's Holy Spirit.

21
00:01:51,160 --> 00:01:58,680
Now this was much more than about rain or just water because the waters of Siloam had

22
00:01:58,680 --> 00:02:04,320
been used during the Old Testament days to anoint the kings of Israel.

23
00:02:04,320 --> 00:02:12,200
So it became known as an anointing place, a water of anointing, and the Spirit would

24
00:02:12,200 --> 00:02:15,240
come upon that individual then.

25
00:02:15,240 --> 00:02:20,440
And so the living waters of Siloam became to be associated with the outpouring of the

26
00:02:20,440 --> 00:02:28,200
Holy Spirit, and the pool of Siloam became known as the Well of Salvation and was associated

27
00:02:28,200 --> 00:02:30,440
with the Messianic Age.

28
00:02:30,440 --> 00:02:37,040
Thus, to the Jewish people of the Second Temple period when Jesus lived and the Magnificent

29
00:02:37,040 --> 00:02:44,040
Temple was there and all of this was in operation, pouring of the water on the altar during the

30
00:02:44,040 --> 00:02:50,720
Feast of Tabernacles was a symbolic of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit during the days

31
00:02:50,720 --> 00:02:52,440
of Messiah.

32
00:02:52,440 --> 00:02:57,040
So I want you to understand that because it was within this complex of the temple and

33
00:02:57,040 --> 00:03:05,640
within this context that Jesus proclaimed to the crowd, He was the source of living

34
00:03:05,640 --> 00:03:07,640
waters.

35
00:03:07,640 --> 00:03:09,280
Wow.

36
00:03:09,280 --> 00:03:16,360
So the Feast is also one of the three great Feast of Israel that were, and this is the

37
00:03:16,360 --> 00:03:23,200
only Feast of Israel that it was prophesied that one day the Gentiles would celebrate

38
00:03:23,200 --> 00:03:24,200
it.

39
00:03:24,200 --> 00:03:29,000
So a quick little story, back in the 70s there was a group of Christians living in Jerusalem

40
00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:35,000
and they said, you know, no Christians even understand what the Feast of Tabernacles is,

41
00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:39,080
yet it's prophesied that the Gentiles will celebrate it.

42
00:03:39,080 --> 00:03:44,120
So we need to begin teaching about the Feast of Tabernacles.

43
00:03:44,120 --> 00:03:46,720
We need to begin celebrating it.

44
00:03:46,720 --> 00:03:52,040
So they were planning to hold the very first Christian celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles

45
00:03:52,040 --> 00:03:59,680
there in Jerusalem in 1980 and some of the organizers went to one of the chief priests

46
00:03:59,680 --> 00:04:05,400
there in Israel, sorry, rabbis, chief rabbis there in Israel and they said, you know, we

47
00:04:05,400 --> 00:04:11,440
want to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles but we don't know how, what is your advice?

48
00:04:11,440 --> 00:04:16,800
And so they had this meeting and they discussed it and he gave them ideas and meaning behind

49
00:04:16,800 --> 00:04:25,360
what they do and then as this couple was leaving his office, the rabbi summoned them back and

50
00:04:25,360 --> 00:04:32,760
he said, if the Gentiles are beginning to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles, I hear

51
00:04:32,760 --> 00:04:36,200
the footsteps of Messiah.

52
00:04:36,200 --> 00:04:42,720
So the Feast is very much associated with the Messianic Age and today because of the pioneering

53
00:04:42,720 --> 00:04:48,320
work of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, Christians all around the world

54
00:04:48,320 --> 00:04:54,360
understand the meaning of the Feast of Tabernacles and are celebrating it back in their churches

55
00:04:54,360 --> 00:04:55,840
and in their homes.

56
00:04:55,840 --> 00:04:59,760
And of course, we're still celebrating it every year there in Jerusalem.

57
00:04:59,760 --> 00:05:05,640
So I invite you celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles with us this year.

58
00:05:05,640 --> 00:05:11,200
You can celebrate from your home by registering for our online Feast of Tabernacles.

59
00:05:11,200 --> 00:05:17,800
We link to it down below in today's show notes and you may even have a Feast Watch Party,

60
00:05:17,800 --> 00:05:23,800
gather your church or your friends or your family and host a little party and watch the

61
00:05:23,800 --> 00:05:26,080
Feast from Jerusalem.

62
00:05:26,080 --> 00:05:30,840
Once again, we link down below to more information on how to do that and how we can help you

63
00:05:30,840 --> 00:05:32,040
do that.

64
00:05:32,040 --> 00:05:38,160
And of course, plan to go next year with us to Jerusalem to the Feast.

65
00:05:38,160 --> 00:05:43,080
It is a wonderful Feast of Messiah, a Feast of Rejoicing.

66
00:05:43,080 --> 00:05:44,800
It's a great time.

67
00:05:44,800 --> 00:05:52,920
So when you take a little break this weekend, prepare to celebrate this joyous Feast of Joy

68
00:05:52,920 --> 00:05:58,760
and just celebrate God's goodness to you, all of His provisions to you.

69
00:05:58,760 --> 00:06:24,720
And with that, I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
