Out of Zion with Susan Michael

Most of the 100 descriptive names of God in the Bible were ascribed Him by His people, and they describe an aspect of His character or are a reminder of one of His mighty deeds. This week I share some of those names that attest to God’s greatness: the Exalted One, the Mighty God. He is also the God who sees and hears your cries. He is the Everlasting God who never grows weary, and He will give you strength in your time of need.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,040
Well, are you feeling a little weary today?

2
00:00:05,040 --> 00:00:06,040
Need some strength?

3
00:00:06,040 --> 00:00:09,520
Well, I've got some good news for you.

4
00:00:09,520 --> 00:00:13,840
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional, and I try to share just a little

5
00:00:13,840 --> 00:00:15,600
inspiration.

6
00:00:15,600 --> 00:00:19,480
Bring a little peace to the close of your very busy week.

7
00:00:19,480 --> 00:00:25,960
Two weeks ago I talked about the name of God and why religious Jews refer to God as

8
00:00:25,960 --> 00:00:29,160
the name or Hashem.

9
00:00:29,160 --> 00:00:36,640
Last week I talked about another descriptive name of God where he used to describe himself,

10
00:00:36,640 --> 00:00:39,920
which was El Shaddai, the Almighty God.

11
00:00:39,920 --> 00:00:45,920
Well there are more than a hundred what I call descriptive names of God in the Bible.

12
00:00:45,920 --> 00:00:53,960
So to avoid confusion, I refer to the name, that tetragrammaton, as the name, and the

13
00:00:53,960 --> 00:01:00,400
rest of them I refer to as descriptive names, because most of these 100 descriptive names

14
00:01:00,400 --> 00:01:06,840
were assigned to God by His people, and they described one aspect of His character or were

15
00:01:06,840 --> 00:01:10,480
a reminder of one of His great events.

16
00:01:10,480 --> 00:01:17,640
I also talked about the word for God, which is L, E-L, and that it means mighty or strong

17
00:01:17,640 --> 00:01:23,440
one, but that it was a generic word for God used for any God.

18
00:01:23,440 --> 00:01:30,360
So many of the descriptive names of God are an extension of L, just like last week when

19
00:01:30,360 --> 00:01:37,400
we talked about El Shaddai, the God Almighty, or the Almighty God.

20
00:01:37,400 --> 00:01:40,040
So this week I want to share a few more.

21
00:01:40,040 --> 00:01:45,360
El Elion, which means the Most High God.

22
00:01:45,360 --> 00:01:51,080
And the word Elion is derived from the Hebrew root for the word that means to ascend or

23
00:01:51,080 --> 00:01:52,440
to go up.

24
00:01:52,440 --> 00:01:57,520
So the implication of this name is that God is the highest one.

25
00:01:57,520 --> 00:01:59,520
He's not just exalted.

26
00:01:59,520 --> 00:02:03,720
He is the highest one, the exalted one.

27
00:02:03,720 --> 00:02:11,120
We read this in Genesis 14, 18, where it describes that mysterious priest Melchizedek,

28
00:02:11,120 --> 00:02:16,480
King of Salem, as priest of God the Most High.

29
00:02:16,480 --> 00:02:23,320
It's used many times in the Psalms as well, Psalm 57-2 says, I cry out to the Most High

30
00:02:23,320 --> 00:02:25,960
God.

31
00:02:25,960 --> 00:02:34,000
Another descriptive name for God based on El is El Gibor, which means the mighty God

32
00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:41,040
in the sense of a warrior, a valiant, strong, and mighty God.

33
00:02:41,040 --> 00:02:50,160
Now this Hebrew word for God is used in one of the most famous verses in Isaiah quoted

34
00:02:50,160 --> 00:02:53,600
in churches every year at Christmastime.

35
00:02:53,600 --> 00:02:55,120
What is that verse?

36
00:02:55,120 --> 00:02:58,240
Well it's Isaiah 9-6.

37
00:02:58,240 --> 00:03:05,320
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders,

38
00:03:05,320 --> 00:03:14,600
and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, El Gibor, mighty God, everlasting Father,

39
00:03:14,600 --> 00:03:16,040
Prince of Peace.

40
00:03:16,040 --> 00:03:18,920
That is El Gibor.

41
00:03:18,920 --> 00:03:26,080
Then there is El Rui, the God of Seeing or the God who sees.

42
00:03:26,080 --> 00:03:31,880
Now this name is ascribed to God by Hagar when she's alone and desperate in the wilderness

43
00:03:31,880 --> 00:03:35,440
because she's been driven out by Sarah.

44
00:03:35,440 --> 00:03:45,040
But what is so interesting in this chapter is that the God who sees El Rui is also the

45
00:03:45,040 --> 00:03:52,640
God who hears, and it's tied together because God sees, he also hears.

46
00:03:52,640 --> 00:03:57,640
So let me read to you Genesis 16 verses 11-13.

47
00:03:57,640 --> 00:04:03,120
When the angel of the Lord said to her, Hagar, you are now pregnant and she'll call his

48
00:04:03,120 --> 00:04:12,120
name Ishmael, which means God has heard, because the Lord has heard your affliction.

49
00:04:12,120 --> 00:04:19,800
Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, you are the God who sees.

50
00:04:19,800 --> 00:04:27,480
So the God who sees is close enough that he hears, and he acts.

51
00:04:27,480 --> 00:04:34,680
Another descriptive name for God is El Olam, the everlasting God.

52
00:04:34,680 --> 00:04:37,840
God's nature is without beginning or end.

53
00:04:37,840 --> 00:04:42,480
It's free from all the constraints of time that you and I live in.

54
00:04:42,480 --> 00:04:50,320
The God who was, who is, and who is to come, from everlasting to everlasting.

55
00:04:50,320 --> 00:04:55,520
This is El Olam, the everlasting God.

56
00:04:55,520 --> 00:05:01,000
So as I close, I want to share with you a verse of encouragement from Isaiah 40 verses

57
00:05:01,000 --> 00:05:05,800
27 through 29 about this everlasting God.

58
00:05:05,800 --> 00:05:07,920
Why do you complain, Jacob?

59
00:05:07,920 --> 00:05:09,720
Why do you say, Israel?

60
00:05:09,720 --> 00:05:12,400
My way is hidden from the Lord.

61
00:05:12,400 --> 00:05:15,920
My cause is disregarded by my God.

62
00:05:15,920 --> 00:05:17,600
Do you not know?

63
00:05:17,600 --> 00:05:18,960
Have you not heard?

64
00:05:18,960 --> 00:05:25,280
The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.

65
00:05:25,280 --> 00:05:30,960
He will not grow tired or weary, and is understanding no one can fathom.

66
00:05:30,960 --> 00:05:36,840
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

67
00:05:36,840 --> 00:05:42,160
So as you take a break this weekend, reflect upon this everlasting God.

68
00:05:42,160 --> 00:05:45,960
He is the God who sees you and your needs.

69
00:05:45,960 --> 00:05:53,240
Therefore he hears your cry, and he is the God to whom you can rely on.

70
00:05:53,240 --> 00:05:56,400
He never grows tired or weary.

71
00:05:56,400 --> 00:06:02,800
He is everlasting, and He will give you strength.

72
00:06:02,800 --> 00:06:24,760
So with that, I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
