The Story of Hannukah

Out of Zion with Susan Michael

Many Christians are not familiar with the significance of the Hannukah story because the story is not told in the Bible. It occurred inbetween the Old and New Testaments. But the Maccabean defeat of the Seluecid forces allowed them to take back the temple and rededicate it to the God of Israel. This helped to set the stage for the beginning of the New Testament story of Jesus which begins in that same temple with the priest Zachariah – the father of John the Baptist. So Happy Hannukah to everyone!

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:05,640
Shalom from the heart of the Jewish quarter of the old city of Jerusalem.

2
00:00:05,640 --> 00:00:11,480
It's Friday afternoon, people are scurrying to get home and to get in place

3
00:00:11,480 --> 00:00:16,100
for the beginning of Shabbat and the city actually is beginning to quiet and

4
00:00:16,100 --> 00:00:21,080
down. And so from here I want to welcome you to this week's Shabbat Shalom

5
00:00:21,080 --> 00:00:26,200
devotional. When I seek to share just a little inspiration and bring a little

6
00:00:26,200 --> 00:00:31,720
piece to the close of your very busy week. We're taking a break from our Torah

7
00:00:31,720 --> 00:00:37,440
reading this week in order to talk about Hanukkah since this week is the time

8
00:00:37,440 --> 00:00:41,960
for the Hanukkah celebration. You know it's a holiday that a lot of Christians

9
00:00:41,960 --> 00:00:46,560
are not very familiar with because it happened in the inter-testamental period

10
00:00:46,560 --> 00:00:53,360
in between the Old Testament and the New Testament. During this time the Greeks

11
00:00:53,360 --> 00:00:59,480
Alexander the Great had conquered the world and after his death his kingdom

12
00:00:59,480 --> 00:01:05,080
was divided up between four generals and the Seleucus general is the one that

13
00:01:05,080 --> 00:01:12,040
ruled over this area which is now the land of Israel and his name was Antiochus

14
00:01:12,040 --> 00:01:18,760
the Fourth Epiphanes and he was enforcing Hellenism on all the populations in

15
00:01:18,760 --> 00:01:24,680
his kingdom because that is how of course they make them into loyal citizens.

16
00:01:24,680 --> 00:01:31,520
And so he was enforcing Hellenism here in the land and it wasn't going over so

17
00:01:31,520 --> 00:01:38,560
well because with the Greek language and the Greek culture comes Greek Paganism

18
00:01:38,560 --> 00:01:44,200
and the Jewish people wouldn't shouldn't have anything to do with Paganism so

19
00:01:44,200 --> 00:01:48,760
there were many Jewish people that were fighting against the forces and the

20
00:01:48,760 --> 00:01:55,200
influence of Hellenization. Antiochus the Fourth Epiphany gets very upset he

21
00:01:55,200 --> 00:02:00,480
actually forbids Jewish worship he forbids the Sabbath he forbids everything

22
00:02:00,480 --> 00:02:05,120
and then he takes over their temple and he desecrates it by sacrificing what was

23
00:02:05,120 --> 00:02:12,760
probably a pig. Now there was the lineage of the priestly family of Aaron

24
00:02:12,760 --> 00:02:19,280
known as the Maccabees that rose up against this and their little band of

25
00:02:19,280 --> 00:02:25,400
zealots and fighters actually won against the forces the Greek forces here in

26
00:02:25,400 --> 00:02:31,560
the area which is a complete miracle but it also happened at a time when the

27
00:02:31,560 --> 00:02:36,920
Seleucus of control was weakening and so they were able to not only just take

28
00:02:36,920 --> 00:02:41,880
over Jerusalem and rededicate the temple to the God of Israel but they

29
00:02:41,880 --> 00:02:46,360
eventually spread out and had sovereignty over the Galilee and other areas and it

30
00:02:46,360 --> 00:02:53,960
lasted for about a hundred years but here in Jerusalem once they took Jerusalem

31
00:02:53,960 --> 00:03:01,120
away from the Greeks and they began to rededicate the temple and they wanted to

32
00:03:01,120 --> 00:03:10,760
burn the menorah in the temple and they only had oil for one day so they began

33
00:03:10,760 --> 00:03:15,000
to burn the menorah and the miracle is that it burned for the full eight days

34
00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:20,600
until they were able to bring more oil from the Galilee in order to burn the

35
00:03:20,600 --> 00:03:26,440
menorah. Here behind me is a menorah that the Temple Institute has made they have

36
00:03:26,440 --> 00:03:31,560
researched and they believe this is the closest replica to what the menorah in

37
00:03:31,560 --> 00:03:37,520
the temple looked like and and so it's a perfect place for me to stand here and

38
00:03:37,520 --> 00:03:44,440
share the story of Hanukkah. Now Hanukkah is a holiday that we should all

39
00:03:44,440 --> 00:03:50,640
celebrate Jews and Christians because the rededication of the temple was

40
00:03:50,640 --> 00:03:55,920
necessary for actually the story that begins in the New Testament and in the

41
00:03:55,920 --> 00:04:03,320
book of Luke it begins with the priest Zacharias serving in the temple and the

42
00:04:03,320 --> 00:04:08,520
angel appears to him and says that he's going to have a child and as you

43
00:04:08,520 --> 00:04:14,360
remember the story he was the father of John the Baptist and that was the

44
00:04:14,360 --> 00:04:19,360
beginning of the whole story of the birth of Jesus it began in the temple and

45
00:04:19,360 --> 00:04:24,520
so we have the Maccabees and Hanukkah to thank for that so join in with the Jewish

46
00:04:24,520 --> 00:04:30,200
community this week and celebrate Hanukkah along with them. With that I'm

47
00:04:30,200 --> 00:04:36,360
going to wish you a Shabbat Shalom and I'll see you back here next week.
