Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The early church was initially made up of Jews who believed Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, and boy were they surprised when gentiles started getting saved. This introduced so many problems into the already difficult life of the early church. But I am so grateful for the way the Jewish leaders handled the situation and for the wonderful apostolic leadership of Paul. They were true pioneers and visionaries who allowed the Holy Spirit to lead them into a whole new season in God’s redemptive plan.

This episode complements the daily readings from our Walk Thru the Bible reading plan for December 27 - January 2, covering Acts 3-18; Galatians; 1st & 2nd Thessalonians; 1st Corinthians.

6
00:00:16,120 --> 00:00:20,200
Now, let's join our host, Susan Michael.

7
00:00:20,200 --> 00:00:24,040
Well, hey there.

8
00:00:24,040 --> 00:00:28,360
You know, today we're going to be talking more about the early church.

9
00:00:28,360 --> 00:00:35,160
And a lot of times we kind of idolize the early church as just kind of the highlight

10
00:00:35,160 --> 00:00:36,160
of Christianity.

11
00:00:36,160 --> 00:00:44,120
And, you know, we have a beautiful description of the church there in Acts 2 and 3 and 4.

12
00:00:44,120 --> 00:00:48,800
But there was also a lot of division and there were some contentious issues.

13
00:00:48,800 --> 00:00:50,640
So we're going to be talking about this week.

14
00:00:50,640 --> 00:00:56,680
You know, the early church was initially made up of Jews who believed in Jesus as the Jewish

15
00:00:56,680 --> 00:00:57,680
Messiah.

16
00:00:57,680 --> 00:01:05,680
And, boy, were they surprised when the Holy Spirit began to fall on Gentiles.

17
00:01:05,680 --> 00:01:12,480
And this introduced so many problems into the already difficult life of the early church.

18
00:01:12,480 --> 00:01:18,600
But I am so grateful for the way that the Jewish leaders handled the situation and for

19
00:01:18,600 --> 00:01:24,240
the wonderful apostolic leadership of Paul, particularly.

20
00:01:24,240 --> 00:01:30,640
But they were all true pioneers and visionaries and they allowed the Holy Spirit to lead them

21
00:01:30,640 --> 00:01:35,000
into a whole new season in God's redemptive plan.

22
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:37,880
So that's what we're going to hear about this week.

23
00:01:37,880 --> 00:01:39,080
I want to welcome you.

24
00:01:39,080 --> 00:01:43,000
This is Walk Through the Bible, week number 48.

25
00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:48,640
We are reading this week in our daily Bibles the dates of November 26 through December

26
00:01:48,640 --> 00:01:57,400
2, or that would be the pages of 1513 to 1545.

27
00:01:57,400 --> 00:02:02,760
Last week we talked about three really exciting portions of Scripture in the story of the

28
00:02:02,760 --> 00:02:10,000
resurrection of Jesus, of his final words of the Great Commission to the disciples,

29
00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:14,320
and then the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the early church.

30
00:02:14,320 --> 00:02:22,800
The early church is growing so fast and persecution begins almost immediately.

31
00:02:22,800 --> 00:02:29,160
So this week we're going to pick up the story and we're going to read about Peter, who

32
00:02:29,160 --> 00:02:31,640
is in the city named Joppa.

33
00:02:31,640 --> 00:02:35,480
Today it's called Joppa, but then it was Joppa.

34
00:02:35,480 --> 00:02:42,680
And he raises Dorcas from the dead and nearby in Caesarea, which is just a hop, skip and

35
00:02:42,680 --> 00:02:49,800
a jump from Joppa, was a Roman citurian named Cornelius.

36
00:02:49,800 --> 00:02:58,200
And it says that he was of the Italian regiment, but he was a devout, God fearing man who gave

37
00:02:58,200 --> 00:03:02,480
alms and was very respected by the Jews.

38
00:03:02,480 --> 00:03:05,680
So I want to explain this first.

39
00:03:05,680 --> 00:03:13,120
In the synagogues, not just throughout Israel, but all throughout the Roman Empire, remember

40
00:03:13,120 --> 00:03:21,680
the Jews had been in exile now for some of them 700 years, others 500 years.

41
00:03:21,680 --> 00:03:26,600
Some had returned and built the national life there in the land, but there were Jews scattered

42
00:03:26,600 --> 00:03:28,800
throughout the Roman Empire.

43
00:03:28,800 --> 00:03:33,960
And last week we read how that there were Jews in Jerusalem for Pentecost and they had

44
00:03:33,960 --> 00:03:38,000
come from every nation under heaven.

45
00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:43,200
So they're spread throughout, there are synagogues all throughout the Roman Empire.

46
00:03:43,200 --> 00:03:50,640
And it was very common that in those synagogues you would find Gentiles who had either converted

47
00:03:50,640 --> 00:03:58,040
to Judaism, which means they had been fully circumcised and had been converted and accepted

48
00:03:58,040 --> 00:04:00,600
into the community as Jews.

49
00:04:00,600 --> 00:04:07,440
Or there were other Gentiles who hadn't taken the full step of official conversion, but

50
00:04:07,440 --> 00:04:09,200
they were a part of the synagogue.

51
00:04:09,200 --> 00:04:12,200
They were called God fearing.

52
00:04:12,200 --> 00:04:15,520
And that means that really they had adopted Judaism.

53
00:04:15,520 --> 00:04:16,800
They were in the synagogue.

54
00:04:16,800 --> 00:04:21,560
They prayed, they gave alms to the Jews as the Jewish people did.

55
00:04:21,560 --> 00:04:26,320
And it says here of Cornelius that he was respected by the Jews.

56
00:04:26,320 --> 00:04:30,200
And that's why he was one of those God fearing Gentiles.

57
00:04:30,200 --> 00:04:32,560
A part of the Jewish community.

58
00:04:32,560 --> 00:04:34,720
This was very common.

59
00:04:34,720 --> 00:04:46,160
So the angel says to Cornelius, your prayers have been heard and your gifts have been seen.

60
00:04:46,160 --> 00:04:49,640
And they've been as a memorial before God.

61
00:04:49,640 --> 00:04:51,560
And he tells him to send for Peter.

62
00:04:51,560 --> 00:04:53,240
And Peter has a vision.

63
00:04:53,240 --> 00:04:57,640
He's praying in Joppa and he has a vision of this large sheet.

64
00:04:57,640 --> 00:05:00,640
And it's filled with animals and birds.

65
00:05:00,640 --> 00:05:02,520
And God tells him to rise up and eat.

66
00:05:02,520 --> 00:05:08,080
He says, God forbid, I've never eaten an unclean animal.

67
00:05:08,080 --> 00:05:17,360
And so God tells him not to call unclean what is clean, what God has made clean.

68
00:05:17,360 --> 00:05:19,480
And he does this three times.

69
00:05:19,480 --> 00:05:26,720
And then lo and behold, here comes the servants that Cornelius has sent.

70
00:05:26,720 --> 00:05:29,520
Takes Peter back to Cornelius's home.

71
00:05:29,520 --> 00:05:35,640
Peter goes in the home and he says, you know I as a Jew should not be stepping foot in

72
00:05:35,640 --> 00:05:38,640
your home as a Gentile.

73
00:05:38,640 --> 00:05:46,760
But I am here because God has told me to come and to not consider to be unclean what God

74
00:05:46,760 --> 00:05:47,760
has made clean.

75
00:05:47,760 --> 00:05:50,160
Now I'm going to be very clear here.

76
00:05:50,160 --> 00:05:53,920
This vision was not about food and dietary laws.

77
00:05:53,920 --> 00:05:57,200
God used food and dietary laws to make a point to Peter.

78
00:05:57,200 --> 00:06:04,600
I'm sending you to the Gentiles and don't consider them unclean if I have made them

79
00:06:04,600 --> 00:06:05,680
clean.

80
00:06:05,680 --> 00:06:11,280
And so as Peter preaches to Cornelius and his family, the Holy Spirit is poured out

81
00:06:11,280 --> 00:06:12,280
upon them.

82
00:06:12,280 --> 00:06:15,840
So obviously the Lord had heard their prayers.

83
00:06:15,840 --> 00:06:17,400
He considered them clean.

84
00:06:17,400 --> 00:06:19,400
He was pouring out the Holy Spirit.

85
00:06:19,400 --> 00:06:22,440
Peter needed to accept them as well.

86
00:06:22,440 --> 00:06:25,880
That's the message of that vision.

87
00:06:25,880 --> 00:06:33,320
Now at the same time we read about the church in Antioch.

88
00:06:33,320 --> 00:06:41,840
And in Antioch it is growing and there are many Gentiles coming into the faith.

89
00:06:41,840 --> 00:06:48,280
And so Barnabas goes to Tarsus where Paul had fled actually they told him, Paul get

90
00:06:48,280 --> 00:06:50,320
out of Jerusalem.

91
00:06:50,320 --> 00:06:51,680
You're too contentious.

92
00:06:51,680 --> 00:06:53,200
You get too much attention.

93
00:06:53,200 --> 00:06:55,320
There's too much opposition to you.

94
00:06:55,320 --> 00:07:01,600
So he had gone to Tarsus and Barnabas went and found Paul and he said, come.

95
00:07:01,600 --> 00:07:05,520
The mission field is now outside of Jerusalem.

96
00:07:05,520 --> 00:07:09,160
Come to Antioch and Paul did.

97
00:07:09,160 --> 00:07:20,080
Now in Acts 13 we have Paul's first recorded sermon which is in a synagogue.

98
00:07:20,080 --> 00:07:27,280
So the pattern here is that when the apostles would enter a town the first thing they would

99
00:07:27,280 --> 00:07:29,920
do is go to the synagogue.

100
00:07:29,920 --> 00:07:33,520
And you'll notice a lot of the times you'll notice this when you're reading through the

101
00:07:33,520 --> 00:07:40,640
book of Acts that in the synagogue it will say that there were Jews and there were God

102
00:07:40,640 --> 00:07:43,960
fearing Gentiles.

103
00:07:43,960 --> 00:07:51,960
And sometimes there were Hebraic Jews which were strict Jews and there were Greek Jews

104
00:07:51,960 --> 00:07:53,480
or Hellenistic Jews.

105
00:07:53,480 --> 00:07:55,560
They were the more assimilated Jews.

106
00:07:55,560 --> 00:07:58,240
They were the less dogmatic ones.

107
00:07:58,240 --> 00:08:00,160
But they were a part of the Jewish community.

108
00:08:00,160 --> 00:08:05,840
And then you had these Gentiles some had actually converted to Judaism were fully observant

109
00:08:05,840 --> 00:08:07,120
of the law.

110
00:08:07,120 --> 00:08:12,920
And then there were other Gentiles that were just a part of Judaism but had not formally

111
00:08:12,920 --> 00:08:13,920
converted.

112
00:08:13,920 --> 00:08:19,480
And they had all these different factions in the synagogues.

113
00:08:19,480 --> 00:08:25,360
So Paul would go to the synagogue and they would all go, start in the synagogues.

114
00:08:25,360 --> 00:08:31,000
But here we read about in Acts 13 Paul goes to the synagogue and preaches his first sermon

115
00:08:31,000 --> 00:08:38,520
there and he says, fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God.

116
00:08:38,520 --> 00:08:40,080
So there you have it.

117
00:08:40,080 --> 00:08:41,960
They're right there in the synagogues.

118
00:08:41,960 --> 00:08:45,360
It's very, very common.

119
00:08:45,360 --> 00:08:52,320
But eventually there would be opposition to the apostles and they would be kicked out

120
00:08:52,320 --> 00:08:53,320
of the synagogues.

121
00:08:53,320 --> 00:08:59,080
But you need to know that their message was just as contentious to the Gentiles as it

122
00:08:59,080 --> 00:09:01,400
was to the Jews.

123
00:09:01,400 --> 00:09:10,080
So while the Jews may have not agreed with the preaching of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah,

124
00:09:10,080 --> 00:09:17,800
there was the Gentiles may not have liked that they were coming in and disturbing the

125
00:09:17,800 --> 00:09:23,720
life of the city and the worship of the pagan gods in the city.

126
00:09:23,720 --> 00:09:29,200
And then all of them may have been very, very worried about the preaching of a king other

127
00:09:29,200 --> 00:09:31,640
than Caesar.

128
00:09:31,640 --> 00:09:36,920
So it wasn't just the Jews that opposed the message.

129
00:09:36,920 --> 00:09:38,920
It was all of them.

130
00:09:38,920 --> 00:09:45,200
And it was a very contentious message of Jesus as king and Messiah.

131
00:09:45,200 --> 00:09:54,320
And so the Paul and the apostles, but we read mainly about Paul and his missionary journeys.

132
00:09:54,320 --> 00:10:01,560
And here it says that the Jewish leaders incited the God fearing women and the leading men

133
00:10:01,560 --> 00:10:03,200
of the city.

134
00:10:03,200 --> 00:10:07,040
So these God fearing women were part of the synagogue.

135
00:10:07,040 --> 00:10:12,480
And the leading men, I guess, also of the synagogue, but obviously they're Gentiles.

136
00:10:12,480 --> 00:10:13,960
So there's all this mix.

137
00:10:13,960 --> 00:10:22,000
Sometimes it's really hard to understand who's what and the root of the opposition because

138
00:10:22,000 --> 00:10:24,400
of this mixture.

139
00:10:24,400 --> 00:10:27,840
And the same thing happened in the synagogue in Iconium.

140
00:10:27,840 --> 00:10:28,840
They're kicked out.

141
00:10:28,840 --> 00:10:29,840
There's troubles.

142
00:10:29,840 --> 00:10:33,640
And it follows Paul from city to city.

143
00:10:33,640 --> 00:10:36,520
And you really, your heart goes out to Paul.

144
00:10:36,520 --> 00:10:40,160
It's a very hard calling that he has.

145
00:10:40,160 --> 00:10:44,640
But do you know in every city a church would be born?

146
00:10:44,640 --> 00:10:51,600
In the midst of persecution, in the midst of rejection by many would be the acceptance

147
00:10:51,600 --> 00:10:53,320
by a few.

148
00:10:53,320 --> 00:10:58,680
And those few would be the nucleus of a church in that city.

149
00:10:58,680 --> 00:11:05,800
And then as Paul went more and more on his travels, he would come back to visit those

150
00:11:05,800 --> 00:11:06,800
cities.

151
00:11:06,800 --> 00:11:11,280
He would write letters back to those cities to stay in touch with those new little churches

152
00:11:11,280 --> 00:11:16,680
that were springing up and that were maturing and growing up.

153
00:11:16,680 --> 00:11:23,720
Now as I say, Paul is brought to Antioch.

154
00:11:23,720 --> 00:11:29,320
And there's many Gentiles coming to the Lord through all of their travels.

155
00:11:29,320 --> 00:11:31,280
They're seeing Gentiles coming to the Lord.

156
00:11:31,280 --> 00:11:33,200
So this is really a growing issue.

157
00:11:33,200 --> 00:11:36,160
What do we do with these Gentiles?

158
00:11:36,160 --> 00:11:39,920
Do we tell them that they need to be circumcised or not?

159
00:11:39,920 --> 00:11:45,880
So Paul and Barnabas go back to Jerusalem to meet with the leaders of the church.

160
00:11:45,880 --> 00:11:50,200
These are the leaders of the entire church at the time.

161
00:11:50,200 --> 00:11:51,760
They're in Jerusalem.

162
00:11:51,760 --> 00:11:55,000
They are all Jewish believers in Jesus.

163
00:11:55,000 --> 00:12:00,200
And they go back to tell them what's happening around the world.

164
00:12:00,200 --> 00:12:01,720
In their travels, I should say it.

165
00:12:01,720 --> 00:12:04,360
It happened first in Caesarea with Peter.

166
00:12:04,360 --> 00:12:07,880
Now Paul seeing it happen here and there.

167
00:12:07,880 --> 00:12:09,560
What do we do with them?

168
00:12:09,560 --> 00:12:16,140
And this is the famous Jerusalem church council that we read about in Acts 15.

169
00:12:16,140 --> 00:12:18,360
This is a pivotal moment, my friends.

170
00:12:18,360 --> 00:12:24,680
And it's a pivotal moment for those of you like me that are Gentile, that today we have

171
00:12:24,680 --> 00:12:26,560
come to know Jesus.

172
00:12:26,560 --> 00:12:35,600
And thanks to the decision made here in Acts 15, you and I did not have to become circumcised,

173
00:12:35,600 --> 00:12:41,960
convert to Judaism in order to receive the Holy Spirit and be a part of the church.

174
00:12:41,960 --> 00:12:53,280
The leaders of the church said, well, look, if God is accepting the Gentiles as they are,

175
00:12:53,280 --> 00:12:56,880
then we should accept them as they are.

176
00:12:56,880 --> 00:13:02,120
And law and Jewishness were not required for them to receive the Holy Spirit.

177
00:13:02,120 --> 00:13:07,960
So who are we to say that they need to become under the law or to become Jewish?

178
00:13:07,960 --> 00:13:12,520
And so they wrote a letter to the Gentiles.

179
00:13:12,520 --> 00:13:15,640
And Paul carries this letter back to the church at Antioch.

180
00:13:15,640 --> 00:13:18,520
And it goes throughout to any of the churches after that.

181
00:13:18,520 --> 00:13:24,800
But this letter tells them that they do not have to observe the law.

182
00:13:24,800 --> 00:13:34,120
But they asked them to abstain from food polluted by idols, to abstain from sexual immorality,

183
00:13:34,120 --> 00:13:41,120
and meat strangled animals, or eating strangled animals, and from blood.

184
00:13:41,120 --> 00:13:47,880
And then they give this reason, because the law of Moses has been preached in every city.

185
00:13:47,880 --> 00:13:55,920
So in other words, in every city, there are Jewish congregations and synagogues and Jewish

186
00:13:55,920 --> 00:14:02,800
people with great sensitivity towards the dietary laws, sensitivity towards paganism

187
00:14:02,800 --> 00:14:07,640
and eating any meat that's been sacrificed to an idol.

188
00:14:07,640 --> 00:14:14,440
And so in order to be sensitive to these Jewish people that may come into the church, abstain

189
00:14:14,440 --> 00:14:15,920
from these things.

190
00:14:15,920 --> 00:14:22,000
It's not about law, and it's not about that you can't be saved if you go eat the blood

191
00:14:22,000 --> 00:14:23,280
of an animal.

192
00:14:23,280 --> 00:14:30,920
It's saying to be sensitive to the Jewish sensitivities, please abstain from these things.

193
00:14:30,920 --> 00:14:38,400
So thank God that these leaders had this wisdom, and that they made this decision.

194
00:14:38,400 --> 00:14:47,000
And this just pushed open the gates for Gentiles to come into the church full force.

195
00:14:47,000 --> 00:14:52,480
And so as I said, Paul takes this letter back to the church in Antioch, and it just happens

196
00:14:52,480 --> 00:15:01,640
to be in Antioch is the first place that the followers of Jesus are called Christians.

197
00:15:01,640 --> 00:15:10,320
Up until this point, they've been called the way, and they've also been called the Nazarenes,

198
00:15:10,320 --> 00:15:16,840
the followers of the Nazarene, and there were Ebonites.

199
00:15:16,840 --> 00:15:24,760
But this is the first time in Antioch that they are called Christians, and they are the

200
00:15:24,760 --> 00:15:29,560
first ones to receive this letter from the Jerusalem Council.

201
00:15:29,560 --> 00:15:38,880
So now the apostle Paul has to contend with all these factions in the early church out

202
00:15:38,880 --> 00:15:41,760
in the Roman Empire.

203
00:15:41,760 --> 00:15:47,000
And people come through and all of a sudden they tell him, you need to be circumcised.

204
00:15:47,000 --> 00:15:50,560
And Paul has to write a letter and say, no, no, no, don't listen to them.

205
00:15:50,560 --> 00:15:54,680
They're preaching a gospel that's different from the one I preached.

206
00:15:54,680 --> 00:15:57,760
You do not have to be circumcised.

207
00:15:57,760 --> 00:16:00,080
You do not have to come under the law.

208
00:16:00,080 --> 00:16:02,200
And he lays out the reasons why.

209
00:16:02,200 --> 00:16:09,160
And so the first book that Paul may have written, a lot of people think it's the first book

210
00:16:09,160 --> 00:16:12,840
that he wrote, is the book of Galatians.

211
00:16:12,840 --> 00:16:17,440
And Galatians really deals with this issue quite a lot.

212
00:16:17,440 --> 00:16:25,840
The issue of the law, what is the purpose of the law, and how that the early believers

213
00:16:25,840 --> 00:16:32,280
in Jesus, these Gentile believers, did not need to come under the law.

214
00:16:32,280 --> 00:16:34,400
So let's look at this for a minute.

215
00:16:34,400 --> 00:16:41,680
In Galatians 3, I want to look particularly at verse 21 and verse 24.

216
00:16:41,680 --> 00:16:48,200
So he says here, is the law therefore opposed to the promises of God?

217
00:16:48,200 --> 00:16:52,480
So he has told them they do not have to observe the law.

218
00:16:52,480 --> 00:16:57,880
So he says here, is the law therefore opposed to the promises of God?

219
00:16:57,880 --> 00:17:00,000
Absolutely not.

220
00:17:00,000 --> 00:17:05,560
For if the law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have

221
00:17:05,560 --> 00:17:07,720
come by the law.

222
00:17:07,720 --> 00:17:08,880
24.

223
00:17:08,880 --> 00:17:11,760
So the law was our guardian.

224
00:17:11,760 --> 00:17:18,480
Some translations say tutor until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.

225
00:17:18,480 --> 00:17:26,960
So what is he saying here, that we are justified by faith, therefore we do not have to come

226
00:17:26,960 --> 00:17:28,720
under the law.

227
00:17:28,720 --> 00:17:34,160
And then he says here, so does that mean that the law is like an opposition to being justified

228
00:17:34,160 --> 00:17:35,160
by faith?

229
00:17:35,160 --> 00:17:38,040
And Paul says, no, it's not an opposition.

230
00:17:38,040 --> 00:17:42,960
It's just that we can't be justified through the law.

231
00:17:42,960 --> 00:17:48,320
The law was given as our guardian, as our teacher.

232
00:17:48,320 --> 00:17:55,560
The law was given to keep us in the way of God until Christ came and then that we would

233
00:17:55,560 --> 00:17:58,120
be justified by faith.

234
00:17:58,120 --> 00:18:06,040
So the law had a very important role to play to prepare us and to point us towards the

235
00:18:06,040 --> 00:18:08,320
coming of Christ.

236
00:18:08,320 --> 00:18:10,520
It's not in contradiction.

237
00:18:10,520 --> 00:18:17,400
It's just not needed for salvation and for justification.

238
00:18:17,400 --> 00:18:31,520
Now going on into 3 verse 7, it says, because you are His sons, God sent the spirit of His

239
00:18:31,520 --> 00:18:36,760
son into our hearts, the spirit who calls Abba Father.

240
00:18:36,760 --> 00:18:43,320
So you are no longer a slave or someone in bondage, but you're God's child and since

241
00:18:43,320 --> 00:18:48,280
you're His child, God has made you an heir.

242
00:18:48,280 --> 00:18:59,480
So the difference here is that we are not to be in bondage to the law because God has

243
00:18:59,480 --> 00:19:02,720
sent His spirit into our hearts.

244
00:19:02,720 --> 00:19:06,000
We are no longer a slave or a servant.

245
00:19:06,000 --> 00:19:09,680
We are a child and we become an heir.

246
00:19:09,680 --> 00:19:11,440
And that's the difference.

247
00:19:11,440 --> 00:19:14,080
It's all about the Holy Spirit.

248
00:19:14,080 --> 00:19:19,320
And in the last few weeks we talked about in the New Covenant that it wasn't going to

249
00:19:19,320 --> 00:19:23,880
be like the Old Covenant at Sinai with the law on tablets.

250
00:19:23,880 --> 00:19:29,800
The New Covenant was number one going to forgive them of their sins, but it was going to write

251
00:19:29,800 --> 00:19:35,720
the law on their hearts and that would be done by the Holy Spirit.

252
00:19:35,720 --> 00:19:46,000
That is what is so different that through the death of Jesus, which was for the justification,

253
00:19:46,000 --> 00:19:53,120
our justification, our right standing before God, our forgiveness that we are now considered

254
00:19:53,120 --> 00:20:00,240
as clean by God, and He will pour His Holy Spirit into us because we are sons.

255
00:20:00,240 --> 00:20:01,760
We are heirs.

256
00:20:01,760 --> 00:20:05,120
We are joint heirs with Christ.

257
00:20:05,120 --> 00:20:15,440
So looking now at Galatians 5 verses 13 through 26, you, my brothers and sisters, were called

258
00:20:15,440 --> 00:20:23,360
to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh, rather serve one another

259
00:20:23,360 --> 00:20:31,840
humbly in love, for the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command to love your neighbor

260
00:20:31,840 --> 00:20:34,000
as yourself.

261
00:20:34,000 --> 00:20:43,040
So this is saying that you are not to be a bondage to the law, you are to be free, but

262
00:20:43,040 --> 00:20:50,840
that doesn't mean that you are free to go out in sin and to live however you want to.

263
00:20:50,840 --> 00:20:57,320
It means that you are to be filled with the Holy Spirit and walk in the Spirit, which

264
00:20:57,320 --> 00:21:05,040
means that you will walk in love and that in itself will be in obedience to the law.

265
00:21:05,040 --> 00:21:11,440
So you see, it's not about a rote obedience to the law, it's about being led of the Spirit

266
00:21:11,440 --> 00:21:17,800
to walk in love, which then is a fulfillment of the laws.

267
00:21:17,800 --> 00:21:25,960
Verse 16, so I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

268
00:21:25,960 --> 00:21:28,800
And then he tells them the difference.

269
00:21:28,800 --> 00:21:35,200
For the flesh desires, what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit, what is contrary

270
00:21:35,200 --> 00:21:36,440
to the flesh.

271
00:21:36,440 --> 00:21:41,960
They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do whatever you want, but if you

272
00:21:41,960 --> 00:21:46,560
are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

273
00:21:46,560 --> 00:21:55,360
Now the acts of the flesh are this, sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry,

274
00:21:55,360 --> 00:22:04,880
ragecraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions,

275
00:22:04,880 --> 00:22:08,960
envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

276
00:22:08,960 --> 00:22:15,720
I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom

277
00:22:15,720 --> 00:22:26,000
of God because they are not walking in the obedience of the freedom of the Spirit.

278
00:22:26,000 --> 00:22:36,480
Verse 27, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,

279
00:22:36,480 --> 00:22:41,040
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

280
00:22:41,040 --> 00:22:45,480
Against such, there is no law.

281
00:22:45,480 --> 00:22:52,080
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

282
00:22:52,080 --> 00:22:58,600
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit and let us not become

283
00:22:58,600 --> 00:23:02,640
conceited, provoking and envying each other.

284
00:23:02,640 --> 00:23:09,200
So He is saying, you have received the Spirit, now walk in the Spirit and keep walking in

285
00:23:09,200 --> 00:23:10,440
the Spirit.

286
00:23:10,440 --> 00:23:18,840
Don't give in to envy, don't give in to provoking each other and to all of these divisions.

287
00:23:18,840 --> 00:23:23,320
My friend, it is the Holy Spirit that makes the difference.

288
00:23:23,320 --> 00:23:28,680
And if you ever want to know, well, is this God's will or what and what is the Spirit

289
00:23:28,680 --> 00:23:34,320
leading me to do, ask yourself this, is it love?

290
00:23:34,320 --> 00:23:35,820
Is it peace?

291
00:23:35,820 --> 00:23:37,480
Is it joy?

292
00:23:37,480 --> 00:23:38,520
Is it kind?

293
00:23:38,520 --> 00:23:39,720
Is it good?

294
00:23:39,720 --> 00:23:45,560
These are the tests so that you will know what is of the Holy Spirit in your life and

295
00:23:45,560 --> 00:23:54,560
walk in that Spirit and fulfill the law that is wrapped up in love.

296
00:23:54,560 --> 00:24:02,320
Now Paul then goes on his second missionary journey and the agitators follow him around

297
00:24:02,320 --> 00:24:09,960
again and he goes to Thessalonica and then Corinth for a year and a half and Paul is really

298
00:24:09,960 --> 00:24:12,280
very discouraged.

299
00:24:12,280 --> 00:24:18,000
So much so that Jesus appears to him, now this is the second time I think that Jesus

300
00:24:18,000 --> 00:24:25,080
has appeared to Paul and he tells him to stay in Corinth and so Paul does, he stays there

301
00:24:25,080 --> 00:24:27,760
for a year and a half.

302
00:24:27,760 --> 00:24:34,720
And from there he writes some more letters and so we read this week we read first and

303
00:24:34,720 --> 00:24:43,480
second Thessalonians and he's having to deal with these baby churches.

304
00:24:43,480 --> 00:24:50,520
They're an infancy, their understanding is basic, but they have all of these voices and

305
00:24:50,520 --> 00:24:56,680
contentious divisions amongst them telling them to do this or to not do that.

306
00:24:56,680 --> 00:25:03,320
So Paul writes and he tells them that his colleague Timothy has given a very good report

307
00:25:03,320 --> 00:25:08,040
of the Thessalonians but he has to deal with two problems.

308
00:25:08,040 --> 00:25:15,840
One is sexual immorality and the other is that they're not working, there are some of

309
00:25:15,840 --> 00:25:19,520
some philosophy that they don't need to work.

310
00:25:19,520 --> 00:25:25,680
We're not sure why if they're thinking that they're just going to wait for the return

311
00:25:25,680 --> 00:25:30,760
of Jesus, they don't need to work or if there was something else going on in the society

312
00:25:30,760 --> 00:25:38,800
around them but they weren't working and he's telling them get up, start working and provide

313
00:25:38,800 --> 00:25:41,760
for yourself and for your family.

314
00:25:41,760 --> 00:25:48,040
And then in second Thessalonians somebody wrote a letter to Thessalonians and acted like it

315
00:25:48,040 --> 00:25:55,360
was from Paul and so he had to write a second letter to set the record straight and to correct

316
00:25:55,360 --> 00:25:58,000
some wrong information.

317
00:25:58,000 --> 00:26:02,280
And one of the things they thought was that Jesus had already returned so he had to tell

318
00:26:02,280 --> 00:26:09,920
him believe me, when Jesus returns you're going to know it because the whole world is

319
00:26:09,920 --> 00:26:17,320
going to know it and he goes into a description of what that return will be like.

320
00:26:17,320 --> 00:26:23,520
Then after a year and a half in Corinth Paul goes on the third missionary journey and

321
00:26:23,520 --> 00:26:30,240
on the road then he writes back to the church at Corinthians and writes first and second

322
00:26:30,240 --> 00:26:36,800
Corinthians which we begin reading this week and continue next week.

323
00:26:36,800 --> 00:26:39,440
Corinthians is a much longer book.

324
00:26:39,440 --> 00:26:46,920
It once again has to deal with sin inside the church and then it answers various questions

325
00:26:46,920 --> 00:26:55,400
about sex, about marriage, about some gray areas like meat sacrifice to idols and keep

326
00:26:55,400 --> 00:27:06,680
in mind once again you're dealing with the hardcore Jews, the assimilated Jews, the pagans

327
00:27:06,680 --> 00:27:13,400
that had converted to Judaism and now maybe were a part of the church, pagans that just

328
00:27:13,400 --> 00:27:22,680
coming into the church and they're bringing that pagan lifestyle with them of sexual immorality,

329
00:27:22,680 --> 00:27:23,680
of eating the meats.

330
00:27:23,680 --> 00:27:28,560
I think the butchers were actually a part of the whole temple system in these cities.

331
00:27:28,560 --> 00:27:35,560
It was hard not to eat meat that wasn't cut and cooked in a temple.

332
00:27:35,560 --> 00:27:37,720
And so how do you deal with all of this?

333
00:27:37,720 --> 00:27:43,280
And this is why Paul has to write these letters, deal with these issues and try to bring unity

334
00:27:43,280 --> 00:27:47,600
to the churches.

335
00:27:47,600 --> 00:27:52,960
And of course, how to operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

336
00:27:52,960 --> 00:27:57,680
So a lot of reading this week, there's so many things that we could talk about but I

337
00:27:57,680 --> 00:28:03,120
just want to bring it up, wrap it up for this week.

338
00:28:03,120 --> 00:28:12,800
In spite of all the persecution that Paul and the early church endured, the early church

339
00:28:12,800 --> 00:28:17,720
was born and in all these cities throughout the Roman Empire.

340
00:28:17,720 --> 00:28:22,400
And if you study the lives of the apostles and where they went, they went everywhere.

341
00:28:22,400 --> 00:28:24,120
They went all the way to India.

342
00:28:24,120 --> 00:28:33,520
They went to Egypt, Cyprus, to Iraq, you know, all of these areas to Rome, to Spain.

343
00:28:33,520 --> 00:28:40,400
These were the early believers and they took the gospel and baby churches were born all

344
00:28:40,400 --> 00:28:43,280
throughout the Roman Empire.

345
00:28:43,280 --> 00:28:48,280
And they did it in spite of severe persecution.

346
00:28:48,280 --> 00:28:51,280
Most of them were martyred because of their faith.

347
00:28:51,280 --> 00:28:54,120
I am so grateful for them.

348
00:28:54,120 --> 00:29:00,640
And then we see how divided the church was and how contentious some of these issues were

349
00:29:00,640 --> 00:29:02,160
in the early church.

350
00:29:02,160 --> 00:29:03,840
This should actually encourage us.

351
00:29:03,840 --> 00:29:11,040
We have some contentious issues dividing our church today and we should be encouraged

352
00:29:11,040 --> 00:29:18,760
that it's nothing new, divisions, but we must seek to bring unity for the sake of the gospel

353
00:29:18,760 --> 00:29:21,920
and for the sake of the mission that we've been given.

354
00:29:21,920 --> 00:29:27,320
I am so thankful to the Jewish Council, the Jerusalem Council that we read about in Acts

355
00:29:27,320 --> 00:29:33,920
15 for their wise decision how to allow the Gentiles to come into the church, how they

356
00:29:33,920 --> 00:29:35,880
managed all of this.

357
00:29:35,880 --> 00:29:39,800
You know, Jesus didn't tell them that this was going to happen.

358
00:29:39,800 --> 00:29:45,200
They were called totally by surprise when the Holy Spirit fell on Gentiles.

359
00:29:45,200 --> 00:29:49,400
He hadn't told them what was going to happen and what to do and result.

360
00:29:49,400 --> 00:29:57,120
They had to just be led of the Holy Spirit and hear from the Holy Spirit how to handle

361
00:29:57,120 --> 00:30:00,000
these situations one after the other.

362
00:30:00,000 --> 00:30:02,080
And I am so grateful for them.

363
00:30:02,080 --> 00:30:09,400
I'm grateful for Paul and the early apostles and what they did and the price they paid.

364
00:30:09,400 --> 00:30:17,840
So as you're reading through this week, you can keep these things in mind and be encouraged

365
00:30:17,840 --> 00:30:24,240
over the life of the early church and the work of God that prevailed in spite of all

366
00:30:24,240 --> 00:30:25,240
of this.

367
00:30:25,240 --> 00:30:26,240
And we can be encouraged.

368
00:30:26,240 --> 00:30:30,720
And I believe that the work of God is going to prevail in our days as well.

369
00:30:30,720 --> 00:30:34,040
But enjoy the reading of God's Word.

370
00:30:34,040 --> 00:30:40,080
And until we're back here together next week, God bless.
