00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,700
Well, hey there and welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional from the Out of

2
00:00:06,700 --> 00:00:08,600
Zion podcast.

3
00:00:08,600 --> 00:00:14,160
I hope you'll join me here each week as I just share a short little devotional thought

4
00:00:14,160 --> 00:00:21,160
that is meant to inspire, to strengthen your faith, and to just bring a little peace as

5
00:00:21,160 --> 00:00:24,280
you close out a busy week.

6
00:00:24,280 --> 00:00:27,880
Last week we talked about peace and the word shalom.

7
00:00:27,880 --> 00:00:32,600
This week I want to talk about the second word in our title, Shabbat.

8
00:00:32,600 --> 00:00:33,600
What is it?

9
00:00:33,600 --> 00:00:37,120
Well, Shabbat is the Hebrew word for Sabbath.

10
00:00:37,120 --> 00:00:41,280
It's built on the number seven, which in Hebrew is Sheva.

11
00:00:41,280 --> 00:00:46,240
So Shabbat, Shabbat, it means the seventh day.

12
00:00:46,240 --> 00:00:52,960
And because God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, the Shabbat has

13
00:00:52,960 --> 00:01:02,160
become to be associated with rest and to cease activity as the meaning of the word.

14
00:01:02,160 --> 00:01:07,620
The Bible says that when God rested on the seventh day that He blessed it.

15
00:01:07,620 --> 00:01:09,000
He made it holy.

16
00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:14,340
So it's considered a holy day in the Jewish calendar each week.

17
00:01:14,340 --> 00:01:19,320
So I told you last week Israelis greet you by saying shalom.

18
00:01:19,320 --> 00:01:25,800
And on the Sabbath, or leading up to the Sabbath, they're going to greet you and say shabbat

19
00:01:25,800 --> 00:01:27,040
shalom.

20
00:01:27,040 --> 00:01:35,440
And what they're doing is just wishing you the blessings of a peaceful and restful Sabbath.

21
00:01:35,440 --> 00:01:41,400
I just want to point out that because God rested on the seventh day, it became expected

22
00:01:41,400 --> 00:01:43,800
that His people would do the same.

23
00:01:43,800 --> 00:01:50,760
So in the Mosaic Covenant in Sinai, it was considered the sign of the covenant.

24
00:01:50,760 --> 00:01:56,920
And the Israelite people were the only people on earth that observed a day of rest every

25
00:01:56,920 --> 00:01:57,920
week.

26
00:01:57,920 --> 00:02:04,120
It made them different because they reflected the God to whom they belonged.

27
00:02:04,120 --> 00:02:10,720
Well, today you and I may be Gentile Christians and we're not a part of the Mosaic Covenant.

28
00:02:10,720 --> 00:02:14,000
We've been brought in through the New Covenant.

29
00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:21,400
But if a Sabbath rest is so important to God that He made it a sign of His covenant, maybe

30
00:02:21,400 --> 00:02:26,720
there's something there that we need to learn from it, to see how we can apply it in our

31
00:02:26,720 --> 00:02:27,960
lives.

32
00:02:27,960 --> 00:02:34,120
So as your busy week comes to an end, ponder the blessings of just taking some time each

33
00:02:34,120 --> 00:02:41,320
week to spend time with the Lord, to rest in His presence, to get to know Him better

34
00:02:41,320 --> 00:02:48,600
so that you can reflect His image to the broken world all around you.

35
00:02:48,600 --> 00:02:53,120
We'll only be able to do that by spending more time with Him.

36
00:02:53,120 --> 00:03:04,480
So I want to close this week and I want to wish you a Shabbat Shalom.
