This week the Jewish people will celebrate Yom Teruah—the day of the blowing of trumpets. The description of this day is a little vague, but deep meaning is found in the use of trumpets for calling the people to attention and announcing the start of something. Traditionally, this day begins a 10-day period of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur. But it hints at the day described in 1 Thessalonians when Christ appears at the sound of a trumpet.

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,620
Well, this week the Jewish people will celebrate Yom Teruah, the day of blowing of trumpets.

2
00:00:07,620 --> 00:00:14,200
The description of this day is a little vague, but deep meaning is found in its use of trumpets

3
00:00:14,200 --> 00:00:19,440
for calling the people to attention and announcing the start of something.

4
00:00:19,440 --> 00:00:26,720
Traditionally, this day begins a ten-day period of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur, but

5
00:00:26,720 --> 00:00:34,560
it hints at a day described in 1 Thessalonians when Christ appears at the sound of a trumpet.

6
00:00:34,560 --> 00:00:39,600
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional when I seek to share a little inspiration

7
00:00:39,600 --> 00:00:44,200
and bring a little piece to the close of your very busy week.

8
00:00:44,200 --> 00:00:49,160
We're not talking about our Torah portion this week because we have begun the season

9
00:00:49,160 --> 00:00:51,000
of the fall holidays.

10
00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:57,240
And so I'm going to be talking today about the Feast of Yom Teruah.

11
00:00:57,240 --> 00:01:02,400
If you would like more information on all the Feasts, I will put in today's show notes

12
00:01:02,400 --> 00:01:08,280
a link to how to sign up for our Word from Jerusalem magazine because we have begun

13
00:01:08,280 --> 00:01:14,680
printing a series of twelve articles on the various Feasts throughout the coming year.

14
00:01:14,680 --> 00:01:20,080
So be sure and sign up for the Word from Jerusalem magazine.

15
00:01:20,080 --> 00:01:26,120
Now we're going to read today from Leviticus 23 verses 24 and 25.

16
00:01:26,120 --> 00:01:31,440
Speak to the children of Israel saying, in the seventh month on the first day of the month

17
00:01:31,440 --> 00:01:38,640
you shall have a Sabbath rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

18
00:01:38,640 --> 00:01:45,840
You shall do no customary work on it, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to

19
00:01:45,840 --> 00:01:47,680
the Lord.

20
00:01:47,680 --> 00:01:51,640
Your verse is in Numbers 29 verse 1.

21
00:01:51,640 --> 00:01:57,280
And in the seventh month on the first day of the month you shall have a holy convocation.

22
00:01:57,280 --> 00:01:59,840
You shall do no customary work.

23
00:01:59,840 --> 00:02:05,120
For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.

24
00:02:05,120 --> 00:02:10,800
So Yom Teruah means day of shouting or day of blowing of trumpets.

25
00:02:10,800 --> 00:02:14,520
The idea is a day of loud noise.

26
00:02:14,520 --> 00:02:21,480
Of course the trumpets back at the time of these laws were ram's horns or what we call

27
00:02:21,480 --> 00:02:23,440
a shofar.

28
00:02:23,440 --> 00:02:28,960
On Yom Teruah Israel was blowing trumpets making a loud noise.

29
00:02:28,960 --> 00:02:30,840
They were also resting.

30
00:02:30,840 --> 00:02:37,000
They were assembling as a nation, a holy convocation, and they were making an offering of fire unto

31
00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:38,200
the Lord.

32
00:02:38,200 --> 00:02:41,160
Now that's really all we know about this day.

33
00:02:41,160 --> 00:02:46,400
So God's purpose in establishing it isn't really clear from these verses.

34
00:02:46,400 --> 00:02:50,120
But the first clue I think is the word Teruah.

35
00:02:50,120 --> 00:02:58,200
It's a day of Teruah which means alarm or signal or battle cry or shout of joy.

36
00:02:58,200 --> 00:03:06,880
So a trumpet blast was used to make that loud noise and to announce this new month, this

37
00:03:06,880 --> 00:03:09,800
first day of the month.

38
00:03:09,800 --> 00:03:16,120
Trumpets were also used to coronate kings but they were also blown to sound alarms for

39
00:03:16,120 --> 00:03:23,560
Israel to call the people to assemble to announce a new Jubilee year to prepare for a military

40
00:03:23,560 --> 00:03:32,040
campaign or in the offerings and sacrifices or even in temple worship and praise the trumpet

41
00:03:32,040 --> 00:03:33,440
was used.

42
00:03:33,440 --> 00:03:39,760
So while there is some mystery to the purpose of this day, it's clearly used to gather

43
00:03:39,760 --> 00:03:46,920
yet the attention of God's people to have them remember Him for a whole day to wake

44
00:03:46,920 --> 00:03:54,160
up, pay attention, and to begin a season of repentance before His judgment fell.

45
00:03:54,160 --> 00:04:01,000
So in Jewish tradition this begins a ten day period of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur

46
00:04:01,000 --> 00:04:04,400
which we're going to talk about next week.

47
00:04:04,400 --> 00:04:11,000
The two interesting points about Yom Teruah and the blowing of the trumpet.

48
00:04:11,000 --> 00:04:18,400
As I said it was also associated with the coronation of a king so in Psalm 98.6 it says,

49
00:04:18,400 --> 00:04:25,840
with trumpets and the sound of a horn shout joyfully before the Lord the king.

50
00:04:25,840 --> 00:04:31,640
So I want you to hold that thought and then I want to talk about another very interesting

51
00:04:31,640 --> 00:04:34,920
thing about Yom Teruah.

52
00:04:34,920 --> 00:04:37,000
I find it fascinating.

53
00:04:37,000 --> 00:04:44,840
That is that this day was also referred to as the hidden day or the day and hour that

54
00:04:44,840 --> 00:04:46,360
no man could know.

55
00:04:46,360 --> 00:04:47,520
Why?

56
00:04:47,520 --> 00:04:53,120
Because for ancient Israel knowing when the day began was a little tricky.

57
00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:57,800
Yom Teruah was the first day of the seventh month.

58
00:04:57,800 --> 00:05:03,200
Now in biblical times the Hebrew months all were either twenty nine or thirty days long

59
00:05:03,200 --> 00:05:07,200
and that was determined by the moon cycle.

60
00:05:07,200 --> 00:05:15,080
So as the moon began to wane from the previous month they would watch and wait for the first

61
00:05:15,080 --> 00:05:21,800
sliver of the new moon to announce the new month and here this feast was on the very

62
00:05:21,800 --> 00:05:24,200
first day of the new month.

63
00:05:24,200 --> 00:05:30,400
So therefore it was kind of like they didn't know exactly when it would begin until they

64
00:05:30,400 --> 00:05:33,520
saw that moon and then it began immediately.

65
00:05:33,520 --> 00:05:39,120
So it was sort of known as the hidden day or the day that no man knows.

66
00:05:39,120 --> 00:05:46,840
Of course in the book of Revelation the seven trumpets announce apocalyptic events and in

67
00:05:46,840 --> 00:05:53,840
first Thessalonians it says a trumpet will announce the return of Jesus and that is on

68
00:05:53,840 --> 00:05:57,880
a day and an hour that no one knows.

69
00:05:57,880 --> 00:06:00,120
Isn't that kind of interesting?

70
00:06:00,120 --> 00:06:05,040
So let me read to you first Thessalonians 4.16 part A.

71
00:06:05,040 --> 00:06:11,320
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of an archangel

72
00:06:11,320 --> 00:06:14,360
and with the trumpet of God.

73
00:06:14,360 --> 00:06:21,800
So this is the ultimate Yom Teruah day of shouting and trumpets and coronation of the

74
00:06:21,800 --> 00:06:27,480
king of kings who's going to sit on the throne of David and establish the kingdom of God

75
00:06:27,480 --> 00:06:29,200
on earth.

76
00:06:29,200 --> 00:06:37,200
That is the day Yom Teruah points to and the day we need to prepare our hearts for.

77
00:06:37,200 --> 00:06:54,960
And with that I wish you Shabbat Shalom.
