Why Christians Support Israel Part 5: Biblical Reasons

Why Christians Support Israel Part 5: Biblical Reasons

Out of Zion with Susan Michael

The biblical basis for Christian support of Israel is extensive. The Torah, Psalms, prophetic books, and New Testament agree that God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are “everlasting.” Neither the calling of the Jewish people nor their inheritance of the land have been revoked. With such a firm biblical foundation for support of the Jewish people, it is no surprise to find that many of the fathers of the Bible-based Evangelical Christian movement preached from the scriptures the return of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland and the blessing this return would bring upon the world.

10
00:00:40,360 --> 00:00:47,880
Now, let's join Susan with your Israel Answers.

11
00:00:47,880 --> 00:00:53,600
So far in our series, we have talked about the personal reasons for Christian support

12
00:00:53,600 --> 00:01:00,880
of Israel, the practical reasons for support of Israel, moral and legal reasons, and today

13
00:01:00,880 --> 00:01:04,160
I'm going to tell you the biblical reasons.

14
00:01:04,160 --> 00:01:10,000
Now at the end of today's broadcast, I'm going to offer you a free downloadable, the

15
00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:13,260
10 reasons why Christians should support Israel.

16
00:01:13,260 --> 00:01:18,680
And those reasons are largely biblical reasons, so I really encourage you to get them.

17
00:01:18,680 --> 00:01:24,320
Today I'm just going to focus on four different scriptures, one from the Torah, one from the

18
00:01:24,320 --> 00:01:30,880
Psalms, one from the prophets, and one from the New Testament to show how that the Bible

19
00:01:30,880 --> 00:01:36,920
is very consistent from beginning to end about this subject.

20
00:01:36,920 --> 00:01:42,440
So from the Torah, from the very first book of the Bible, the book of Genesis, we read

21
00:01:42,440 --> 00:01:46,120
the story of how God chose a man named Abram.

22
00:01:46,120 --> 00:01:51,480
And this is what he tells Abram in Genesis 12 verses 1 through 3.

23
00:01:51,480 --> 00:01:56,440
Get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house, to a land that

24
00:01:56,440 --> 00:01:58,000
I will show you.

25
00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:01,680
I will make you a great nation.

26
00:02:01,680 --> 00:02:06,640
I will bless you and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing.

27
00:02:06,640 --> 00:02:11,960
And I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you, and in you

28
00:02:11,960 --> 00:02:16,560
all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

29
00:02:16,560 --> 00:02:22,040
My friends, that's a whole lot of blessing that God would bless him.

30
00:02:22,040 --> 00:02:27,160
He would be a blessing, and God would bless everybody that blessed him, and through him

31
00:02:27,160 --> 00:02:29,980
all the families of the earth will be blessed.

32
00:02:29,980 --> 00:02:33,840
So let's get in on this blessing.

33
00:02:33,840 --> 00:02:37,120
First of all, this is not a magic charm.

34
00:02:37,120 --> 00:02:42,080
This is not a verse that's your key to how you should be blessed, because this verse isn't

35
00:02:42,080 --> 00:02:47,760
actually about you, and it's not giving you a magic formula.

36
00:02:47,760 --> 00:02:55,080
This verse is where God is announcing the initiation of his plan of world redemption,

37
00:02:55,080 --> 00:02:58,440
and he's telling Abraham, I choose you.

38
00:02:58,440 --> 00:03:02,280
If you will follow me, I'm going to take you to a land I'm going to give you.

39
00:03:02,280 --> 00:03:08,020
I'm going to make you a great nation, and I'm going to use you and your people to bless

40
00:03:08,020 --> 00:03:10,200
all the families of the earth.

41
00:03:10,200 --> 00:03:16,560
The apostle Paul later said that verse is referring to Jesus Christ.

42
00:03:16,560 --> 00:03:22,520
That is the blessing to the families of the earth, its world redemption, or personal redemption,

43
00:03:22,520 --> 00:03:24,400
I should say.

44
00:03:24,400 --> 00:03:34,040
Now God chose Abraham, and therefore if you were to bless who God chose, and you blessed

45
00:03:34,040 --> 00:03:39,600
the plan God put into place, then you would be walking in fellowship with God, and you

46
00:03:39,600 --> 00:03:42,640
would be blessed in return.

47
00:03:42,640 --> 00:03:51,200
So I want to encourage you to get involved in blessing Israel and the Jewish people,

48
00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:58,920
not because you will be blessed, because you will, but because God is at work here.

49
00:03:58,920 --> 00:04:02,880
He has laid it all out very clearly here to Abraham.

50
00:04:02,880 --> 00:04:08,200
And don't think for one minute that what he told Abraham has been revoked or is over.

51
00:04:08,200 --> 00:04:14,440
I'm going to show you why what he told Abraham is still in play today.

52
00:04:14,440 --> 00:04:18,760
So now let's go to our next verse, which is out of the book of Psalms.

53
00:04:18,760 --> 00:04:23,760
Psalm 105 verses 8 through 11.

54
00:04:23,760 --> 00:04:30,920
He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded for a thousand generations, the

55
00:04:30,920 --> 00:04:37,200
covenant which he made with Abraham and his oath to Isaac and confirmed it to Jacob for

56
00:04:37,200 --> 00:04:47,120
a statute to Israel as an everlasting covenant saying, To you I will give the land of Canaan

57
00:04:47,120 --> 00:04:50,920
as the allotment of your inheritance.

58
00:04:50,920 --> 00:04:57,680
So the Psalmist here is confirming that God's promise to Abraham that included this piece

59
00:04:57,680 --> 00:05:06,040
of land is an everlasting covenant that will not be broken.

60
00:05:06,040 --> 00:05:10,000
And the gift of the land is a part of an everlasting covenant.

61
00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:13,840
Therefore, it is an everlasting gift.

62
00:05:13,840 --> 00:05:16,640
Now let's look at one of the Hebrew prophets.

63
00:05:16,640 --> 00:05:18,960
Isaiah 62.

64
00:05:18,960 --> 00:05:27,680
This is another verse that tells us how God has invited us to partner with him in what

65
00:05:27,680 --> 00:05:31,600
he is doing in Israel, in Jerusalem.

66
00:05:31,600 --> 00:05:35,200
And that's Isaiah 62 verses 6 through 7.

67
00:05:35,200 --> 00:05:42,360
It says, I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem, they shall never hold their peace

68
00:05:42,360 --> 00:05:44,640
day or night.

69
00:05:44,640 --> 00:05:53,840
You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent and give him no rest till he establishes

70
00:05:53,840 --> 00:05:58,960
and he makes Jerusalem a praise in all the earth.

71
00:05:58,960 --> 00:06:01,200
Now listen to this.

72
00:06:01,200 --> 00:06:08,320
It is God who is going to establish Jerusalem as a praise in all the earth.

73
00:06:08,320 --> 00:06:10,840
When is that going to happen?

74
00:06:10,840 --> 00:06:16,520
Well that is going to happen when we have the kingdom of God on earth and the throne

75
00:06:16,520 --> 00:06:23,360
of David ruling from Jerusalem and that has not happened yet.

76
00:06:23,360 --> 00:06:28,440
And so this scripture makes it very clear that while it's God who's going to do it,

77
00:06:28,440 --> 00:06:36,920
our role is to be watchmen on the walls, praying and interceding with persistence and never

78
00:06:36,920 --> 00:06:41,120
being silent until we see this happen.

79
00:06:41,120 --> 00:06:47,360
We have been invited to partner with God in this great plan of redemption.

80
00:06:47,360 --> 00:06:54,320
We are invited to be involved as intercessors, as though standing on the wall and in so doing

81
00:06:54,320 --> 00:06:59,280
we will be a blessing to Israel and the Jewish people.

82
00:06:59,280 --> 00:07:03,000
Now let's look at a New Testament scripture.

83
00:07:03,000 --> 00:07:09,720
I'm actually going to read to you two scriptures out of the same section though in Romans 9.

84
00:07:09,720 --> 00:07:14,240
We have started with Romans 9 verses 4 and 5.

85
00:07:14,240 --> 00:07:21,760
This is where the apostle Paul lists all of the blessings that we have received from the

86
00:07:21,760 --> 00:07:23,320
Jewish people.

87
00:07:23,320 --> 00:07:25,640
So let's read it.

88
00:07:25,640 --> 00:07:33,120
Who are Israelites to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the

89
00:07:33,120 --> 00:07:41,560
law, the service of God, and the promises of whom are the fathers and from whom according

90
00:07:41,560 --> 00:07:49,240
to the flesh Christ came, who is over all the eternally blessed God, amen.

91
00:07:49,240 --> 00:07:51,320
So what is this saying?

92
00:07:51,320 --> 00:08:01,200
This is saying that God gave to the people of Israel about adoption, His glory, the covenants

93
00:08:01,200 --> 00:08:07,640
that we learned from, the giving of the law, the service of God, the worship of God in

94
00:08:07,640 --> 00:08:13,440
the temple, the promises, the forefather, all of these things that you and I hold dear

95
00:08:13,440 --> 00:08:19,920
as Christians came from and through the Jewish people.

96
00:08:19,920 --> 00:08:27,000
So once we understand their role as though it was as a birthing people to birth these

97
00:08:27,000 --> 00:08:34,640
things into the world for our benefit, we have benefited so much from them.

98
00:08:34,640 --> 00:08:42,680
The very least we can do is to bless them and to support them and stand in solidarity

99
00:08:42,680 --> 00:08:43,680
with them.

100
00:08:43,680 --> 00:08:50,480
But you know some people in the church teach that yes, but because the Jewish people that

101
00:08:50,480 --> 00:08:54,240
did not accept Jesus, they lost it all.

102
00:08:54,240 --> 00:08:58,280
Now God's working with the church.

103
00:08:58,280 --> 00:09:01,340
He's got a new plan and a new people in a way.

104
00:09:01,340 --> 00:09:07,880
So let's read what the apostle Paul said just two chapters later in Romans 11 verses 28

105
00:09:07,880 --> 00:09:18,600
and 29, concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election,

106
00:09:18,600 --> 00:09:28,080
they are beloved for the sake of the fathers, for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

107
00:09:28,080 --> 00:09:36,000
So this is saying that while yes, at the time the people Paul was writing to here and maybe

108
00:09:36,000 --> 00:09:43,240
even at times in history at other times they've been seen as the enemies of the gospel of

109
00:09:43,240 --> 00:09:51,800
Christ and he says nevertheless concerning their calling, concerning their election,

110
00:09:51,800 --> 00:09:59,040
their chosenness, their calling, they are beloved for the sake of the fathers because

111
00:09:59,040 --> 00:10:01,480
God made these promises.

112
00:10:01,480 --> 00:10:10,040
We read about it in Psalm 105, his promises to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob, to Israel.

113
00:10:10,040 --> 00:10:16,960
These are the fathers that for the sake of these promises God made to them, he loves

114
00:10:16,960 --> 00:10:23,560
his people and he is going to see his plan to use them fulfilled.

115
00:10:23,560 --> 00:10:31,060
And it goes on for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

116
00:10:31,060 --> 00:10:34,280
Some of you might pronounce that irrevocable.

117
00:10:34,280 --> 00:10:41,680
So the calling of God cannot be revoked, nor can the gifts.

118
00:10:41,680 --> 00:10:43,760
Well what are the gifts?

119
00:10:43,760 --> 00:10:51,000
Well so much time in Scripture, the land of Canaan was the gift, the inheritance to the

120
00:10:51,000 --> 00:10:52,880
people of Israel.

121
00:10:52,880 --> 00:10:56,440
This my friends has not been revoked.

122
00:10:56,440 --> 00:11:07,400
God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Moses, Israel, they're still in place.

123
00:11:07,400 --> 00:11:15,080
Exile from the land because of their sin did not revoke their ownership of the land and

124
00:11:15,080 --> 00:11:18,840
it did not revoke their calling.

125
00:11:18,840 --> 00:11:25,480
In our days God has brought the people of Israel back to their land.

126
00:11:25,480 --> 00:11:29,760
So we had better get behind this.

127
00:11:29,760 --> 00:11:36,320
He's using them, they are still the call of Abraham, he is fulfilling his promises.

128
00:11:36,320 --> 00:11:43,200
So we had better not oppose it and find ourself on the wrong side of this equation.

129
00:11:43,200 --> 00:11:47,520
We do want to be on the side of God's blessings.

130
00:11:47,520 --> 00:11:50,940
So let me just close with one final point.

131
00:11:50,940 --> 00:11:57,940
With such a firm biblical foundation for support of the Jewish people, it is no surprise to

132
00:11:57,940 --> 00:12:06,280
find that many of the fathers of the Bible-based evangelical Christian movement preached from

133
00:12:06,280 --> 00:12:13,240
the Scriptures the return of the Jews to their homeland and the blessing that that return

134
00:12:13,240 --> 00:12:15,760
would bring to the world.

135
00:12:15,760 --> 00:12:22,160
So modern Christian supporters of Israel follow in the steps of great Christian leaders such

136
00:12:22,160 --> 00:12:29,960
as John and Charles Wesley, Robert Murray, Robert Murray McChain, Charles Spurgeon and

137
00:12:29,960 --> 00:12:35,440
many of the Puritan preachers just to name a few.

138
00:12:35,440 --> 00:12:41,720
So our series so far has demonstrated that while the biblical basis for Christian support

139
00:12:41,720 --> 00:12:49,720
for Israel is extensive, that there are also a variety of other convincing arguments based

140
00:12:49,720 --> 00:12:58,360
just on history, on morality, on legality and just plain old common sense.

141
00:12:58,360 --> 00:13:05,480
So I hope you have found this series helpful as I have reviewed the many reasons why we

142
00:13:05,480 --> 00:13:08,000
as Christians should support Israel.

143
00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:09,600
Are you ready now?

144
00:13:09,600 --> 00:13:12,240
Are you ready to bless Israel?

145
00:13:12,240 --> 00:13:17,400
So go and today's show notes we're going to link to the ICEJ where you can get more

146
00:13:17,400 --> 00:13:21,440
involved in our ministry there in Jerusalem.

147
00:13:21,440 --> 00:13:27,320
And I invite you, if you have never been to Israel, go on one of our tours.

148
00:13:27,320 --> 00:13:33,200
Your life will never be the same and you will have the opportunity to walk that land and

149
00:13:33,200 --> 00:13:42,560
to intercede as Isaiah 62 calls us to intercede while your feet are standing there in Jerusalem.

150
00:13:42,560 --> 00:13:46,380
And then I have two specific offers for you.

151
00:13:46,380 --> 00:13:48,440
So please stay tuned.

152
00:13:48,440 --> 00:13:51,240
Well, hey, give me one more minute.

153
00:13:51,240 --> 00:13:54,600
I have two very special offers for you.

154
00:13:54,600 --> 00:14:01,520
First is all you ladies out there, we have scheduled a women's tour to Israel this November,

155
00:14:01,520 --> 00:14:04,360
November 2nd through the 12th.

156
00:14:04,360 --> 00:14:08,280
I invite you to go with me to the land of the Bible.

157
00:14:08,280 --> 00:14:14,320
Let's walk the land, let's talk the Bible, let's have our faith restored and ignited

158
00:14:14,320 --> 00:14:17,400
and strengthened for the days in which we live.

159
00:14:17,400 --> 00:14:23,000
To sign up, I want you to go down below into today's show notes and sign up for our tour

160
00:14:23,000 --> 00:14:24,520
interest list.

161
00:14:24,520 --> 00:14:27,480
We will send you all the information.

162
00:14:27,480 --> 00:14:38,080
Or if it's easier, just call our tours department line at 866-393-5890.

163
00:14:38,080 --> 00:14:44,080
That's 866-393-5890.

164
00:14:44,080 --> 00:14:47,880
I want to travel Israel with you.

165
00:14:47,880 --> 00:14:55,400
Now my second offer is a free download that we have developed just for you called 10 Reasons

166
00:14:55,400 --> 00:14:58,400
for Christians to Support Israel.

167
00:14:58,400 --> 00:15:03,360
Over the coming weeks, I'm going to be talking about a lot of these reasons, but I want you

168
00:15:03,360 --> 00:15:09,280
to have this download so that you can be preparing yourself, that you can share it with your

169
00:15:09,280 --> 00:15:14,200
friends and colleagues and invite them to listen in each week as I will be going over

170
00:15:14,200 --> 00:15:18,760
some of these reasons and going a little bit farther into depth.

171
00:15:18,760 --> 00:15:26,840
So in today's show notes, we link directly to this downloadable 10 reasons why Christians

172
00:15:26,840 --> 00:15:29,040
should support Israel.

173
00:15:29,040 --> 00:15:37,600
Or you can go to the out-of-zion-show.com landing page, click on Resources, and we should

174
00:15:37,600 --> 00:15:40,200
have a link there for you as well.

175
00:15:40,200 --> 00:15:47,000
So take advantage of this free download, and I will see you back here next week, fully

176
00:15:47,000 --> 00:15:49,840
informed, ready to learn some more.

177
00:15:49,840 --> 00:15:52,480
