Why on Pentecost?

Out of Zion with Susan Michael

If you have any doubt there is a God in Heaven orchestrating events on earth, ask yourself what are the odds that the events of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and outpouring of the Holy Spirit occurred on major Jewish feasts connected to their meaning. Pentecost was one of the three great feasts of Israel and celebrated both the wheat harvest and the giving of the Law on Sinai. Why was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on that particular day?

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:13,600
Well, do you ever wonder where God is or why He may not be acting as quickly as you think

2
00:00:13,600 --> 00:00:14,600
He should?

3
00:00:14,600 --> 00:00:18,560
Well, wait until you hear what I have to share with you today.

4
00:00:18,560 --> 00:00:24,440
I think it will change your whole perspective on the timing of God.

5
00:00:24,440 --> 00:00:27,280
So welcome to this week's Shabbat Shalom devotional.

6
00:00:27,280 --> 00:00:33,640
When I try to share just a little inspiration and bring a little peace to the end of your

7
00:00:33,640 --> 00:00:35,840
very busy week.

8
00:00:35,840 --> 00:00:40,840
You know, when God created the world, He also created times and seasons.

9
00:00:40,840 --> 00:00:47,880
And within that framework, He set aside certain days and weeks as appointed times, or what's

10
00:00:47,880 --> 00:00:56,000
known in Hebrew as mo'edim, when His children were to make pilgrimage to spend time celebrating

11
00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:00,360
His great works in history and to worship Him.

12
00:01:00,360 --> 00:01:07,680
So God's calendar was actually very intentional and it was very instructional.

13
00:01:07,680 --> 00:01:11,000
Now there were seven feasts each year.

14
00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:13,960
Four of them were in the spring and three in the fall.

15
00:01:13,960 --> 00:01:18,000
So today I just want to talk about the spring feast.

16
00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:23,040
You know, they commemorated the Exodus from Egypt when God set His children free from

17
00:01:23,040 --> 00:01:26,000
slavery and bondage there.

18
00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:33,200
And each feast and its rituals were designed to re-enact, to remind the children of Israel

19
00:01:33,200 --> 00:01:38,880
what God had done for them and to teach certain spiritual principles about the way He works.

20
00:01:38,880 --> 00:01:42,560
Now to the astounding part.

21
00:01:42,560 --> 00:01:53,000
Jesus, our sinless, perfect, sacrificial Lamb of God, was slain on the cross on Passover.

22
00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:58,480
During the Feast of Unleavened Bread, His blood applied to the doorpost of our lives

23
00:01:58,480 --> 00:02:02,720
marks us for God's care and His protection.

24
00:02:02,720 --> 00:02:11,360
But Jesus was without the leaven of sin and therefore He qualified to make that sacrifice

25
00:02:11,360 --> 00:02:16,040
on our behalf during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

26
00:02:16,040 --> 00:02:22,480
He rose from the dead on the Feast of First Fruits and the Apostle Paul said He was the

27
00:02:22,480 --> 00:02:27,320
first fruit to be raised, to be resurrected from the dead.

28
00:02:27,320 --> 00:02:32,640
Now Jesus then appeared on earth for forty days and then He instructed His disciples

29
00:02:32,640 --> 00:02:40,560
to wait in Jerusalem until He was going to send the Holy Spirit, which He did on the

30
00:02:40,560 --> 00:02:46,520
fiftieth day after the Feast of First Fruits after His resurrection.

31
00:02:46,520 --> 00:02:52,840
Now the fiftieth day just happens to be the Feast of Shavuot, which means weeks.

32
00:02:52,840 --> 00:02:59,200
It's because it would be seven weeks and one day after the Feast of First Fruits, so it's

33
00:02:59,200 --> 00:03:01,760
known as the Feast of Weeks.

34
00:03:01,760 --> 00:03:07,960
In Greek, it's known by the word Pentecost, which means fifty for the fifty days.

35
00:03:07,960 --> 00:03:14,920
Now Shavuot was a celebration of the wheat harvest and so on that day the Holy Spirit

36
00:03:14,920 --> 00:03:20,480
is poured out upon the early believers to enable them and empower them to go out and

37
00:03:20,480 --> 00:03:26,000
to begin gathering a harvest of souls all around the world.

38
00:03:26,000 --> 00:03:32,400
But Shavuot was also the celebration of the giving of the law at Sinai.

39
00:03:32,400 --> 00:03:38,760
And so on that day the Holy Spirit is poured out on the believers to write the law on their

40
00:03:38,760 --> 00:03:39,920
hearts.

41
00:03:39,920 --> 00:03:46,400
Jeremiah 31 had said that this would be a part of the new covenant that God was going

42
00:03:46,400 --> 00:03:51,880
to cut with His people, that no longer would the law be on tablets of stone, but it would

43
00:03:51,880 --> 00:03:54,200
be written on their hearts.

44
00:03:54,200 --> 00:04:01,360
On that day is when the Holy Spirit was poured out and began that amazing work.

45
00:04:01,360 --> 00:04:09,680
So if you have any doubt that there is a God in heaven orchestrating events here on earth,

46
00:04:09,680 --> 00:04:16,680
just ask yourself, this weekend as you take a little Shabbat rest, just ask yourself,

47
00:04:16,680 --> 00:04:26,920
what are the odds that these events would take place on those exact days of those festivals

48
00:04:26,920 --> 00:04:30,520
fulfilling the meaning of them?

49
00:04:30,520 --> 00:04:34,360
And with that you might also wonder, well what about the fall feast?

50
00:04:34,360 --> 00:04:37,760
We're going to talk about those this fall.

51
00:04:37,760 --> 00:04:41,080
Until then, I want to wish you a Shabbat Shalom.
