What is “Soul Sleep”? This controversial doctrine, primarily taught by Seventh-day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Christadelphians, is based on biblical passages, like Jesus’ statement, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up” (Jn. 11:11). Are those words to be taken literally? When Lazarus died, did his soul go into an unconscious, non-functional 'sleep' mode in the grave? Is that the plight of all who pass away? Or is it true, for born-again Christians, that to be “absent from the body” is to be “present with the Lord” (2 Cor. 5:8)? A vitally important subject to explore.
