When You Love a Prodigal

My husband was a hard-working man. Our prodigal, in his younger years, was not. One day my husband came home and our son was sitting on my car watching his friends work on his car. My husband’s response was, “Can’t you help them fix your car, or at least learn from them. You’re just sitting watching them work.”

My husband rarely got angry, but he did that day. He came and sat down to talk to God about it. The Lord had a question: “How big is the gap between you and your son?” “It’s pretty big, when it comes to work,” he replied.

Then the Lord said, “How big is the gap between you and Me?”

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,760
If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right

2
00:00:06,760 --> 00:00:16,160
here at the When You Love a Prodigal podcast and also help and hope for your own life journey.

3
00:00:16,160 --> 00:00:21,000
Saying once again, we've started the new year with a look at what God might want to

4
00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:25,480
do in our lives through this prodigal journey.

5
00:00:25,480 --> 00:00:30,600
If you have been listening to this podcast for very long, you have heard me say that

6
00:00:30,600 --> 00:00:36,240
God is just as committed to working in us as He is in our prodigals.

7
00:00:36,240 --> 00:00:42,640
He cares about our loved ones, but He also cares about us.

8
00:00:42,640 --> 00:00:50,000
A primary purpose He has is to make us more and more like Jesus.

9
00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:56,160
I'm grateful that God has given us a clear picture of what He is working toward, what

10
00:00:56,160 --> 00:01:00,880
we will be like as we become more like Jesus.

11
00:01:00,880 --> 00:01:08,680
The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 3, and I've read this the last two sessions,

12
00:01:08,680 --> 00:01:14,360
and I just think we need to get this verse, these verses, in our mind.

13
00:01:14,360 --> 00:01:23,360
It says, Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with

14
00:01:23,360 --> 00:01:31,560
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

15
00:01:31,560 --> 00:01:37,520
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any one of you has a grievance against

16
00:01:37,520 --> 00:01:39,080
someone.

17
00:01:39,080 --> 00:01:46,840
Love as the Lord forgave you, and over all these virtues put on love, which binds them

18
00:01:46,840 --> 00:01:51,440
all together in perfect unity.

19
00:01:51,440 --> 00:01:59,120
We're looking at each of these pieces of clothing week by week, and today we are looking at

20
00:01:59,120 --> 00:02:01,800
humility.

21
00:02:01,800 --> 00:02:04,720
My husband was a hard-working man.

22
00:02:04,720 --> 00:02:09,040
Our prodigal, in his younger years, was not.

23
00:02:09,040 --> 00:02:16,240
One day my husband came home, and our son was sitting on my car, watching his friends

24
00:02:16,240 --> 00:02:18,560
work on his car.

25
00:02:18,560 --> 00:02:23,400
My husband's response was, Can't you help them fix your car?

26
00:02:23,400 --> 00:02:25,640
Or at least learn from them?

27
00:02:25,640 --> 00:02:28,760
You're just sitting watching them work.

28
00:02:28,760 --> 00:02:32,360
My husband rarely got angry, but he did that day.

29
00:02:32,360 --> 00:02:37,760
He came in, and he sat down to talk to God about it.

30
00:02:37,760 --> 00:02:39,360
The Lord had a question.

31
00:02:39,360 --> 00:02:47,640
So, Steve, how big is the gap between you and your son?

32
00:02:47,640 --> 00:02:52,360
He said, It's pretty big when it comes to work, especially.

33
00:02:52,360 --> 00:02:58,160
Then the Lord said, So how big is the gap between you and me?

34
00:02:58,160 --> 00:02:59,160
Steve?

35
00:02:59,160 --> 00:03:03,240
Immediately my husband said, Oh, so much bigger.

36
00:03:03,240 --> 00:03:08,600
Give me, Lord, for thinking that I am better than my son.

37
00:03:08,600 --> 00:03:11,640
It's always risky to talk about humility.

38
00:03:11,640 --> 00:03:19,160
After all, to claim any expertise on humility is to negate any claim I might have to being

39
00:03:19,160 --> 00:03:20,960
humble.

40
00:03:20,960 --> 00:03:27,880
We do know, though, that the Father and Jesus Himself, as well as Peter, Paul, and James,

41
00:03:27,880 --> 00:03:36,200
clearly, admonished us to be humble ourselves, or God will need to do it for us.

42
00:03:36,200 --> 00:03:43,560
So to avert any such action by the Lord, I will let Scripture be our teacher.

43
00:03:43,560 --> 00:03:47,880
So here's what it looks like to be humble.

44
00:03:47,880 --> 00:03:55,520
From the Father, if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray

45
00:03:55,520 --> 00:04:02,680
and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will

46
00:04:02,680 --> 00:04:07,440
forgive their sin and will heal their land.

47
00:04:07,440 --> 00:04:16,920
When the Lord saw, this is in 2 Chronicles, when the Lord saw that they humbled themselves,

48
00:04:16,920 --> 00:04:20,600
this word of the Lord came to Shemaiah.

49
00:04:20,600 --> 00:04:25,840
Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them, but will soon give them

50
00:04:25,840 --> 00:04:28,800
deliverance.

51
00:04:28,800 --> 00:04:31,480
In Isaiah 66 we read,

52
00:04:31,480 --> 00:04:38,920
"'Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being, declared the

53
00:04:38,920 --> 00:04:40,520
Lord?

54
00:04:40,520 --> 00:04:48,640
These are the ones I look on with favor, those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and

55
00:04:48,640 --> 00:04:52,800
who tremble at my word.'"

56
00:04:52,800 --> 00:04:57,520
Jesus had a few things to say about being humble as well.

57
00:04:57,520 --> 00:04:58,960
Matthew 11,

58
00:04:58,960 --> 00:05:07,360
"'Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you

59
00:05:07,360 --> 00:05:10,880
will find rest for your souls.'"

60
00:05:10,880 --> 00:05:18,560
My husband did a substantial story on the most important characteristic for a follower

61
00:05:18,560 --> 00:05:25,680
of Christ to have, and he decided that it was to have a humble heart, just as Jesus

62
00:05:25,680 --> 00:05:28,800
mentioned.

63
00:05:28,800 --> 00:05:30,760
In Matthew 23,

64
00:05:30,760 --> 00:05:37,920
"'For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will

65
00:05:37,920 --> 00:05:42,080
be exalted.'"

66
00:05:42,080 --> 00:05:44,080
In Luke 18,

67
00:05:44,080 --> 00:05:50,800
"'I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.'"

68
00:05:50,800 --> 00:05:59,920
This was the beggar who came with his tiny offering for the Lord, and begged God to give

69
00:05:59,920 --> 00:06:06,240
him forgiveness for himself, for all that he had done.

70
00:06:06,240 --> 00:06:09,720
Next to him was a priest who came and said,

71
00:06:09,720 --> 00:06:13,920
"'God, thank you that I'm not like this man.'"

72
00:06:13,920 --> 00:06:16,720
And here's what Jesus said.

73
00:06:16,720 --> 00:06:23,240
"'I tell you this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God, for all those

74
00:06:23,240 --> 00:06:30,760
who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.'"

75
00:06:30,760 --> 00:06:34,480
The apostle Paul also had a few things to say about it.

76
00:06:34,480 --> 00:06:41,120
"'For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you.'"

77
00:06:41,120 --> 00:06:44,040
I think that means all of us.

78
00:06:44,040 --> 00:06:50,760
"'Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with

79
00:06:50,760 --> 00:06:59,760
sober judgment in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.'"

80
00:06:59,760 --> 00:07:01,360
In Ephesians Paul says,

81
00:07:01,360 --> 00:07:09,520
"'Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love.'"

82
00:07:09,520 --> 00:07:16,600
And then in Philippians, "'Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, rather

83
00:07:16,600 --> 00:07:23,960
in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests, but each

84
00:07:23,960 --> 00:07:27,880
of you to the interests of others.'"

85
00:07:27,880 --> 00:07:32,400
I am reminded of this often.

86
00:07:32,400 --> 00:07:35,800
James, who is a brother of Jesus, says,

87
00:07:35,800 --> 00:07:39,840
"'Who is wise in understanding among you?

88
00:07:39,840 --> 00:07:49,360
Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom.'"

89
00:07:49,360 --> 00:07:53,520
And in James 4, but he gives us more grace.

90
00:07:53,520 --> 00:07:55,080
This is why scripture says,

91
00:07:55,080 --> 00:08:02,520
"'God opposes the proud, but gives favor to the humble.'"

92
00:08:02,520 --> 00:08:10,320
And then he goes on and says, "'Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.'"

93
00:08:10,320 --> 00:08:13,600
Then from Peter, he says,

94
00:08:13,600 --> 00:08:22,200
"'Finally all of you be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate,

95
00:08:22,200 --> 00:08:24,960
and humble.'"

96
00:08:24,960 --> 00:08:27,160
He also goes on and says,

97
00:08:27,160 --> 00:08:34,240
"'In the same way you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders, all of you, younger

98
00:08:34,240 --> 00:08:40,960
and elders, clothe yourself with humility toward one another, because God opposes the

99
00:08:40,960 --> 00:08:44,640
proud, but shows favor to the humble.'"

100
00:08:44,640 --> 00:08:47,040
I can hear my husband saying,

101
00:08:47,040 --> 00:08:54,240
"'I don't want God as my enemy, so I am going to choose to humble myself.'"

102
00:08:54,240 --> 00:09:01,760
He goes on and says, "'Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he

103
00:09:01,760 --> 00:09:06,480
may lift you up in due time.'"

104
00:09:06,480 --> 00:09:15,920
These reminders tend to put me on my face before him, claiming mercy and grace.

105
00:09:15,920 --> 00:09:20,200
They are not the only admonitions scripture full of commands.

106
00:09:20,200 --> 00:09:26,160
I read a lot of scripture saying to humble yourself, but there are many, many more.

107
00:09:26,160 --> 00:09:29,400
This is the teaching that Jesus said,

108
00:09:29,400 --> 00:09:35,960
"'Humble yourself, and then I will lift you to where I want you.'"

109
00:09:35,960 --> 00:09:42,360
When we are critical of our wanderers, we should take a moment to check our own pride

110
00:09:42,360 --> 00:09:48,920
and arrogance and humble ourselves before the Lord.

111
00:09:48,920 --> 00:09:51,480
What about you?

112
00:09:51,480 --> 00:09:56,400
Where are you in your journey toward humility?

113
00:09:56,400 --> 00:10:01,000
Is there a situation where your pride is evident?

114
00:10:01,000 --> 00:10:08,160
Humbling yourself may encourage a change in your prodigal.

115
00:10:08,160 --> 00:10:14,560
So we've talked about compassion and kindness and humility.

116
00:10:14,560 --> 00:10:16,080
There's more coming.

117
00:10:16,080 --> 00:10:19,360
But next week, we're going to have another guest.

118
00:10:19,360 --> 00:10:27,880
His name is Ron Deal, and he works with blended families and helping people to grow in their

119
00:10:27,880 --> 00:10:31,800
marriages and to relate well to their children.

120
00:10:31,800 --> 00:10:35,680
I think you're going to want to hear what he has to say.

121
00:10:35,680 --> 00:10:42,560
And then we'll get back to our study of living and loving like Jesus.

122
00:10:42,560 --> 00:10:48,600
You can get resources if you check out the show notes so that you can find places to

123
00:10:48,600 --> 00:10:51,440
go further in these concepts.

124
00:10:51,440 --> 00:11:13,600
God bless you.
