When You Love a Prodigal

Patience is a challenge for most of us—in general, but especially when you love a prodigal.

These definitions might help a little:

  1. the quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation
  2. an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay: to have patience with a late flight.
  3. quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence—to work with patience. Also patience in suffering.

Yet God’s Word tells us that patience should be part of our daily clothing.

If you love a prodigal, you can discover help and hope for your wilderness journey right here

2
00:00:07,360 --> 00:00:14,080
at When You Love a Prodigal and also help and hope for your own life journey.

3
00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:24,160
So how was your gentleness journey this past week? Did your prodigal test it? Was he or she

4
00:00:24,160 --> 00:00:32,720
surprised at the possible differences in your responses? Today we move on adding patience

5
00:00:33,440 --> 00:00:44,000
to our wardrobe as a follower of Jesus. I remember rejoicing at some hard evidence that I had truly

6
00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:54,720
grown in patience. I was on a trip and everything I had almost in my life at that time was red.

7
00:00:55,520 --> 00:01:03,760
Oh look, I'm wearing red. I had a red Mustang convertible. I had red luggage and I had a red

8
00:01:03,760 --> 00:01:13,040
Mac Air computer, a red iPhone and a red mini iPad. And we stopped in Lisbon, Portugal for a layover

9
00:01:13,040 --> 00:01:21,680
and everything around there, there was a big Vodafone charging station where you could charge

10
00:01:21,680 --> 00:01:31,600
all your things. It was red. And there I sat surrounded by red charging all my red electronics.

11
00:01:32,400 --> 00:01:39,120
My assistant Michelle came running up quick. We have to get through immigration to get to the club

12
00:01:39,120 --> 00:01:45,760
and four planes just landed. We need to beat them. So I quickly pulled my cords, wrapped them up,

13
00:01:45,760 --> 00:01:55,280
grabbed my phone and my iPad and rushed to immigration, leaving my red Mac lying on the

14
00:01:55,280 --> 00:02:03,840
red Vodafone station, almost invisible. After immigration, which quickly filled up behind us,

15
00:02:03,840 --> 00:02:13,520
we had to go through security again. Oh, Psy, no, my laptop was missing. Immediately I could see

16
00:02:13,520 --> 00:02:20,320
it was back there still, red on red. Michelle, my assistant, tried to go back where we had just come,

17
00:02:20,320 --> 00:02:28,400
but they wouldn't let her. We made it to the club. I got settled and she took off. Two hours later,

18
00:02:28,400 --> 00:02:37,200
she returned without my computer. But with a promise from the airport police to look through the

19
00:02:37,200 --> 00:02:44,880
security footage for it, I was amazed at my peace of mind and heart, at my ability to say,

20
00:02:44,880 --> 00:02:52,960
thank you, Lord, I could hardly believe how patient I was and so grateful for the good work

21
00:02:52,960 --> 00:02:59,920
God was doing in my life to bring me to this point that I could be peaceful and patient

22
00:02:59,920 --> 00:03:07,360
when things were not good. And it lasted. That has become more a way of life for me.

23
00:03:08,640 --> 00:03:15,040
By the way, the police found the computer. It had been turned into a nearby store by an honest

24
00:03:15,040 --> 00:03:23,120
traveler, but it was more than two weeks and still we hadn't gotten it. It had been going back and

25
00:03:23,120 --> 00:03:29,520
forth between the airport police and the city police. Finally, we had to ask some friends

26
00:03:29,520 --> 00:03:35,680
who lived there to go and get it. I got it. I had a loaner while I waited, but

27
00:03:35,680 --> 00:03:44,160
mostly I realized God had done a work of patience in me because I really didn't get upset. As we

28
00:03:44,160 --> 00:03:53,520
look again at what to wear as a child of God, we turn to Colossians 312 once more. Therefore,

29
00:03:53,520 --> 00:04:05,440
it says, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves, put on wear,

30
00:04:05,440 --> 00:04:16,560
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and today, patience. We all know what patience means

31
00:04:16,560 --> 00:04:23,440
and we often assure others that patience is not our strength. Like the new dad who said,

32
00:04:23,440 --> 00:04:29,040
I have no patience for all this baby stuff or the mom who waits impatiently for her daughter

33
00:04:29,040 --> 00:04:36,080
to get home from a date or the boss who declares, I am losing my patience with your carelessness

34
00:04:37,280 --> 00:04:44,640
or my long wait for a prodigal to see the light and turn from the dark side. It's a hard time

35
00:04:44,640 --> 00:04:54,640
to be patient, isn't it? So the dictionary gives us these definitions for patience. It is the quality

36
00:04:54,640 --> 00:05:05,600
of being patient as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, living through it

37
00:05:05,600 --> 00:05:17,680
without complaint, loss of temper, or irritation. Not easy to do a lot of times. It's also an ability

38
00:05:17,680 --> 00:05:27,200
or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay to have patients say

39
00:05:27,200 --> 00:05:35,840
with a late flight or somebody coming to pick you up. We really don't like to have to wait, do we?

40
00:05:36,560 --> 00:05:46,400
It also says that patience is quiet, steady perseverance, even tempered response, diligence

41
00:05:46,400 --> 00:05:55,920
to work with patience, also to be patient in suffering. Doesn't sound fun, but that's we know,

42
00:05:55,920 --> 00:06:02,880
don't we, patience in suffering. Synonyms often help us grasp the true meaning of the word,

43
00:06:02,880 --> 00:06:11,920
things like composure, diligence, endurance, fortitude, grit, moderation, perseverance,

44
00:06:12,640 --> 00:06:23,520
persistence, restraint, self-control. So how are you doing? Is your patience there on a regular

45
00:06:23,520 --> 00:06:34,000
basis or is impatience more likely? Scripture reveals the patience of God to us. God has been

46
00:06:34,000 --> 00:06:40,480
very patient. I know with me it's amazing how patient he's been. In Romans we read,

47
00:06:41,040 --> 00:06:48,960
do you show contempt for the riches of his gods, kindness, forbearance, and patience,

48
00:06:48,960 --> 00:06:56,320
not realizing that it is his kindness that is intended to lead you to repentance.

49
00:06:57,440 --> 00:07:05,120
He's patient, waiting on us to learn and grow. What if God, although choosing to show his wrath

50
00:07:05,120 --> 00:07:12,400
and make his power known, had born with great patience the objects of his wrath? Oh, he has.

51
00:07:12,400 --> 00:07:21,440
What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy? We,

52
00:07:21,440 --> 00:07:31,280
we are the objects of his mercy and he could just wipe us out and instead he chooses to be patient

53
00:07:31,840 --> 00:07:41,600
until we learn and grow and experience all that he has for us. Paul tells us in 1st Timothy,

54
00:07:41,600 --> 00:07:48,720
but for the very reason I have shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners,

55
00:07:49,760 --> 00:07:58,320
Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him

56
00:07:58,320 --> 00:08:08,240
and receive eternal life. Jesus is immensely patient with us and calls on us to have that patience

57
00:08:08,240 --> 00:08:16,480
with our loved ones. There are admonitions to us to be patient. He says, be patient then, brothers

58
00:08:16,480 --> 00:08:24,560
and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable

59
00:08:24,560 --> 00:08:31,920
crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. He doesn't keep going out and yanking those

60
00:08:31,920 --> 00:08:38,480
plants up to see if they're growing. No, he's patient. He waits and he says he wants us to.

61
00:08:39,760 --> 00:08:49,840
So how? How do we become patient? It seems impossible for many of us. God does not leave

62
00:08:49,840 --> 00:08:58,240
us helpless though. We are being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might

63
00:08:58,240 --> 00:09:10,080
so that you, you and I may have great endurance and patience. God is in the constant process of

64
00:09:10,080 --> 00:09:18,240
strengthiness with his own power, his glorious might, so that we will grow in endurance and patience.

65
00:09:18,240 --> 00:09:29,360
And then, familiar verse, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

66
00:09:29,360 --> 00:09:36,640
goodness, fruitfulness, gentleness, and self-control. All these things that are kind of foreign to our

67
00:09:36,640 --> 00:09:44,320
natural instincts. He says, as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Jesus comes to live in us,

68
00:09:44,320 --> 00:09:53,280
He will bring all of these more and more into reality in our lives, including patience.

69
00:09:55,360 --> 00:10:02,960
Once again, we see that God calls us to the impossible, just as we have in every one of the

70
00:10:02,960 --> 00:10:08,880
clothing, the pieces of clothing that we're supposed to wear as a child of God. We think,

71
00:10:08,880 --> 00:10:16,640
I can't do that. I can't be gentle. I can't be humble over and over. And this one again is maybe

72
00:10:16,640 --> 00:10:26,080
even more impossible than others. But he is busy and he's growing us into patient people as we

73
00:10:26,640 --> 00:10:36,080
allow him to guide us and give us his ideas and his will and his words and his way of relating.

74
00:10:36,080 --> 00:10:44,000
Then he provides the means, the powerful available, doing the impossible Holy Spirit,

75
00:10:44,000 --> 00:10:52,880
living in us to make us patient. Oh my goodness. So what does it look like to live patiently

76
00:10:52,880 --> 00:11:00,400
with a loved one, especially a loved one who's pretty irritating or obnoxious or hurtful or

77
00:11:00,400 --> 00:11:09,600
hurtful or abandoning you? Patience often involves waiting. Probably you don't like waiting any more

78
00:11:09,600 --> 00:11:18,640
than I do. Sometimes it is challenging to follow through with this exhortation from Paul. Let us

79
00:11:18,640 --> 00:11:27,760
not become weary in doing good. For at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give

80
00:11:27,760 --> 00:11:38,800
up. That's calling us to patience. Doing good. Yes, we probably are doing a lot of good, the loving,

81
00:11:38,800 --> 00:11:46,880
disciplining, grace giving, exhorting, praying for our loved ones. These are good things. But

82
00:11:46,880 --> 00:11:57,280
sometimes the hope for, prayed for, begged for good changes never seem to come. And we have to wait.

83
00:11:59,040 --> 00:12:06,400
Guess what? There's a lot of good in the waiting. God seems to say so. I'm just going to read a few

84
00:12:06,400 --> 00:12:15,840
verses where he's talking about what happens when we wait. In Psalm 38, Lord, I wait for you. You

85
00:12:15,840 --> 00:12:25,440
will answer, Lord my God. And in Romans 8, but if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for

86
00:12:25,440 --> 00:12:34,320
it patiently. Well, hopefully more and more, we'll wait for it patiently. For the creation waits

87
00:12:34,320 --> 00:12:41,600
in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. So we're not the only ones waiting.

88
00:12:41,600 --> 00:12:50,400
All of creation is waiting for Jesus to return and do the work that he's planning to do. And part of

89
00:12:50,400 --> 00:12:59,280
that will be his children who look more and more like Jesus, wearing the clothes that he's given us

90
00:12:59,280 --> 00:13:08,000
to wear. Psalm 27, wait for the Lord. Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

91
00:13:08,000 --> 00:13:19,520
In the morning, Psalm 5 says, Lord, you hear my voice. In the morning, I lay my request before you

92
00:13:20,480 --> 00:13:28,320
and wait expectantly. That's from David. He's saying, I can come to you and tell you what I want,

93
00:13:28,320 --> 00:13:35,760
but then I give you my request and I wait for your perfect timing and perfect way to answer my request.

94
00:13:35,760 --> 00:13:45,440
Psalm 40, David again, I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry.

95
00:13:46,400 --> 00:13:52,960
So David was in a hard place. Something bad was going on. And he came to the Lord

96
00:13:53,600 --> 00:14:02,400
and he waited patiently. And God is asking us as we do our best to love and care for and encourage

97
00:14:02,400 --> 00:14:11,760
and help our wanderers. He says, wait patiently. Wait patiently. He hears our cry of our heart.

98
00:14:12,320 --> 00:14:19,120
He hears what we say. Help, help, Lord. He says, wait, I'm doing a good work. You'll see.

99
00:14:20,400 --> 00:14:27,280
Think of those throughout Scripture who have waited. Abraham, who waited until he was around

100
00:14:27,280 --> 00:14:35,120
100 for a child. Joseph waited to get out of prison. Moses waited in the desert while the

101
00:14:35,120 --> 00:14:42,320
children of Israel had rebelled. The children of Israel were in the desert and in captivity,

102
00:14:42,320 --> 00:14:49,680
waiting for a word from God. They were waiting also throughout the history of Israel for the Messiah.

103
00:14:49,680 --> 00:14:58,080
And two old, old people, Simeon and Anna, waited to see Jesus. And when he came to the temple to

104
00:14:58,080 --> 00:15:04,640
be presented, they had waited and they got to see the salvation that was coming in the Messiah.

105
00:15:05,280 --> 00:15:12,080
The disciples, Jesus told them, go and wait till I come with the Spirit to put in you

106
00:15:12,080 --> 00:15:19,040
and give you what you need. And many, many more who are mentioned in the 11th chapter of Hebrews

107
00:15:19,040 --> 00:15:28,880
of what they waited for. And God waits. He has waited through all the prodigalness of his children.

108
00:15:30,320 --> 00:15:38,880
Probably some of us were waited on in our own prodigalness. And he's calling us to continue

109
00:15:38,880 --> 00:15:46,400
that. He waited for just the right time to send a son in the incarnation and now waits for the

110
00:15:46,400 --> 00:15:55,040
right time to send him again. And he waits for each of us and each of our loved ones

111
00:15:56,080 --> 00:16:06,880
to surrender, to accept, to return, to trust. And since he's waiting, so we wait with patience.

112
00:16:06,880 --> 00:16:15,920
And Isaiah says, Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you. Therefore, he will rise up to show you

113
00:16:15,920 --> 00:16:24,960
compassion, for the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him. So if you need

114
00:16:24,960 --> 00:16:34,000
blessing in your life, wait on God to do what he's going to do. How are you in waiting? Is

115
00:16:34,000 --> 00:16:42,400
patience a strength or not a strength for you? But can you see how Jesus would like to make

116
00:16:42,400 --> 00:16:52,000
patience be kind of the stellar thing in your life that you are able to wait patiently and be at peace

117
00:16:52,720 --> 00:17:03,040
and not complain? And you wait with great love for your prodigal to return. And then

118
00:17:03,040 --> 00:17:09,840
next week we look at another amazing piece of clothing that Jesus has called us to, and that

119
00:17:09,840 --> 00:17:35,840
is forgiveness. God bless you.
